Alot of you do not seem to like this song But I think it's great Does anyone know if Cott himself done a version of his own song I like the way he has a wee dig at geldof in it(wonder did bob know when singing the lyrics)
I like it. It's better than a lot of Mondo Bongo. Don't think Cott did his own version. Geldof knew it was about him cos like the Germans, he believes every song is about him

Mondo Bongo had its moments, but for me there were tracks, most notably Under Their Thumb and Another Piece of Red that came across as half baked. I think Up All Night should have been on the UK version which would have improved it and had House on Fire made it as well then it would have been comparable to what went before.
IMHO Man at the Top was better than Please Don't Go and Whitehall 1212. I probably wouldn't have it on Mondo cos it doesn't sound like it should be on there.

Agree with majority of the above except the last bit. The Rats had the ability to mix styles very successfully and even where quite different to rest of the album, such track slotted in well (thinking Mondays on Surfacing or Death on V Deep as just two examples). Man at the Top, to me anyway, would not have been the sore thumb sticking out of Mondo Bongo, being as it is barely much of a departure from the general feel and sound of it.
I'm fond of all the tracks on Mondo (though ArrGee has poisoned Another Piece of Red for me, for which I am eternally grateful), However, I can't help but think in retrospect that a decent editor (Mutt Lange?) would have said, "I'll take the fruit-based songs (Banana Republic, Go Mango, The Elephant's Grapeyard) but you're going to have to do better for the other 10 tracks, thanks." Anecdotal evidence from this forum (i.e. the most robust evidence in existence) suggests they may have fallen back to tracks that actually ended up on the V Deep album.

I agree, Mutt Lange would have thrown out half the songs and recorded it in the winter in The Netherlands rather in the sun in Ibiza which would have focused minds a bit. On the Mastertapes radio show I got the impression that Mutt Lange would send Geldof off writing songs whilst whipping the rest of the band into shape musically. When you consider that Geldof wrote Howard Hughes and Eva Braun the SAME day, undoubtedly this approach bore dividends.
Visconti's best work came with Bowie when he just let him do what he wanted and pieced it all together. There are hints of that in the Mondo production. The V Deep production is a bit more mysterious. Apparently Godley and Creme reckon they pretty much did everything and Visconti only appeared late on to re-produce ala Phil Spector on Let It Be.
At their best, Mondo and V Deep are very good, arguably some of the individual tracks are among their best, which does make me think that a bit more quality control could have made them as good as the first two LPs.
It would be nice if The Rats did the odd choice cut post Banana Republic live. House on Fire and Up All Night are well known enough and it would be nice to hear Go Man Go.
On the album itself, Go Man Go and Fall Down are my stand outs. Banana Republic is a great song, however the album mix isn't as good as the single.
I also like Straight Up, Elephant's Graveyard (apart from the Shame Shame Shimmy Shame reminding me of the lame Bop Shoo Wops that ruined Nice 'n' Neat) , This is my Room and Hurt Hurts. So there's about 70% of an album straight off. Had they topped it off with House on Fire and Up All Night then, for me, it would have been in the same league as the first two LPs.
