Hard to take in this song was No. 1. 37 years ago. My God how the years have gone by in a flicker. This song is still as fresh today as it was way back in the cold days of discontent 78/79

As Bob keeps saying, it is still very relevant today. Not just the meaning though, it still sounds fresh.

Where did all those years go?

According to Wiki it reached No 1 on 18/11/15. I remember it being November, but could not confirm the exact date.

I got the first album after TFAOS. In fact that may have been the first album by the Rats that I bought - I had Tonic on a tape from somebody else's LP at first though later bought it ...
Actually I was listening to TFAOS this morning and really enjoying it. I usually mainly listen to the first 2, but had "forgotten" how much I like the 3rd album. It transported me back in time though - happy memories. Funny how that sometimes happens ...

So many emotions attached to Rat music. It really does take you back and it feels like those teen years all over again. biggrin

This was the song that first introduced me to the Boomtown Rats.  Everyone was going mad about Grease at the time, and Bob ripping up a picture of ONJ and JT on TOTP is an ever-lasting memory for me.  I bought Tonic for the Troops and The Boomtown Rats LP's as  a result and the rest is history.

I don't know why I bought the second album first, given that I first saw them on TOTPs and was switched on to them within seconds. Before that I wouldn't have had the money, I suppose, and just bought the new album rather than the old one.

It was a slow climb that's for sure:

 22  -  9  -  7  -  3  -  2  -  1  -  1  -  2  -  5

Many thought it had run out of steam at 7, but it had TOTP airplay at that position and two weeks later at 2, providing a boost.

Straight in at 22 isn't too bad. Made a nice big jump to no 9, before working it's way. It must have been released early October then.

I imagine he means for Rat Trap.

Imagine watching that on Kenny Everett in the heat of summer and it's not until the cold and frost of November that it's number one. It had a 15 week chart life so it was still hanging around the lower reaches of the chart in February 1979.

My memory is atrocious lol. I can't remember it being around for so long before it reached the upper echelons of the charts .
