What a gig! nice surprise guest appearance from the Strypes, who joined the Rats to perform Never Bite The Hand That Feeds. enjoyed the trouble pilgrims. Great atmosphere. Here's to - another 40 years. Well maybe not that long, but forever Rats.
Strypes also stuck around for She Does it Right, which sounded great. Either last night was very loud or gigs are taking toll. I can't hear much this morning (no bad thing now I'm back in the offcie already )
Safe journey back to all. Good to see so many familiar faces.
A few observations. First the Olympia is a great venue, a lot better than Vicar St. Great curtain backdrop, sloped floor , good sound and two bars which were very big. Could do with better loos though.
Crowd full capacity I would guess. Basically I was squashed where I was standing. Very hot too.
Music- pretty much standard fare as of last few years. Good but for whatever reason I though they performed better at many of the other gigs I have attended. Maybe being squashed, hot and knocked about by lager carring middle aged people biases my view a little. I've given up 'complaining' about all the cameras and filming etc. The less interested fans always seemed to be checking their phones during some of the songs.
Highlights- Mary/Boom Boom/ I wanna be your man. The video of the birthday cake being eaten by rats which lasted about 3 minutes at the start. The Strypes was a nice surprise (allegedly Pete's love children according to Geldof!)She Does It Right/Never Bite The Hand That Feeds. Banana Rep was a bit of a lowpoint for me as I never like this song done live.
The Occasion-Dublin did not disappoint in welcoming home it's wayward sons.well Dun Laoghaire's wayward sons. Nice to see some members of bands extended families in the 'gods' looking down.
Overall- Worthy celebration of the band and it's 40 year reign though for me it lacked something, a spark that some of the other gigs seemed to have. Maybe it's just familiarity of my part, and also when any band is playing the same set over and over for three years it's always going to be hard to reach some impossible 'musical high' and we all have own own best/favourite gigs that achieve that status through many different factors, some of which are purely in own own heads and make up.
Finally- thanks to everyone of the forum/Net over the last few years for being so dedicated and caring and for travelling to Dublin from all parts near and far. We'll always have the memories, and who would have thought such an occasion would be possible a few short years ago?

Thanks for the detailed review Noel. I take it Hot Press are muddling up Diamond Smiles and Drag me Down or was the '84 single played?
Also I though the sound on Neon Heart sounded a little odd, so much so that I though it might be a new song for the first minute. Maybe it was my earplugs, but I don't think so. Weird.
I've seen the band about 13 times in the last few years so, as I say, it's hard to get too excited(that's not as cynical as it sounds). I prefer the records/cd to live versions but to see the guys who actually made those records is the thing, that's why I go. It's basically a testament of the studio recordings they made and live work always varies in quality and execution and indeed interpretation.
A few observations. First the Olympia is a great venue, a lot better than Vicar St. Great curtain backdrop, sloped floor , good sound and two bars which were very big. Could do with better loos though.

The venue was really good, but as I discovered, it was better being in the so called melee where there was plenty of space than being on the sidelines. My normal ruse of getting to the bar as Diamond Smiles was playing was thwarted by the closure of the bar and I ended up in a very crowded area on the edge. But I did have a pi$$ at that point and the toilets were better than many London venues.
I enjoyed the concert immensely up until Diamond Smiles, but that is always the case. From the moment they played Eva Braun through to She Does It Right, which perplexed a lot of the audience, I had a blast, as did a few people around me. It was really good that everyone sang Mondays a cappella rather than wait around for the "dramatic" pause. I did a bit too much jumping, as I was limping a bit today. Didn't suffer from the deafness either as I was a bit back from the stage, behind the second barrier.
It was a shame there was no Joey in the set which given it was played to a TV audience a couple of nights before and there was even a sax player in attendance.
I will probably sound like an ungrateful son of a bitch from here on in (sorry suss!), but I thought all the band were going to sign the T shirts as I went to see The Rats not just Geldof. I have Geldof's scrawl on plenty of stuff, and if it was a Geldof gig I would have pi$$ed off down the pub (or more likely back to the hotel given my 5am wake up call) rather than hang around for all the stalker pictures. No, I still don't have a stalker picture! To be fair, it was kind of interesting; Geldof was in good form and it was really good that he took the time to come out press the flesh, sign shirts and have his picture taken with all and sundry.
However, after watching the Late Late show on the iPad and realising how good it would have made the gig had they played Joey, I had a bit of a come down. I am now thinking I had seen that exact same show bar the first encore at least five times in the last two or three years, and what point is there in going again. I can't really see myself going to see them outside the M25 for sure (oh how many times have I written that!), but I am finding the whole thing so repetitive that I'm not sure I'd be that fussed about seeing them. I certainly wouldn't feel like I would be missing anything.
I am glad I went to Dublin as it's the sort of thing that will never happen again, as I really can't imagine this happening in 2025. I wish that was the end as it would be quite fitting. Oddly that thought also crossed my mind three years ago in Dublin when the Bradbury Rats played their last public gig. The thing is I can't see how it will be any better and will probably just deteriorate.
Anyway, enough of the doom, it was as good to see many familiar faces and meet some new ones and have some self indulgent Rat based chats through the evening. It's a nice little community of dedicated fans. If this forum has done nothing else it has been the seed from which a lot of this has grown. Always impressed by fans who literally travelled the width of Britain and Ireland to see them.
Well, we made it in the end and it was great to see so many people we've made friends with over the past 2/3 years from and outside this forum.
It was a shame we couldn't have got over on Saturday or earlier on Sunday as we didn't have chance to have a good catch up with everyone and we also had to look after our friends who were stranded in Dublin waiting to get back to the UK from Saturday.
Nevertheless we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and it was good to have a drink with Reevo and Lisa afterwards. Thanks for sorting out the T shirts Suss, Will catch you for a beer at the next London date ArrGee.
Good reviews from Noel & ArrGee. I thought the concert & the venue were good. Obviously it was more or less the same set list we've seen for the past couple of years which was a bit of a shame, but I guess I feel grateful that we've got that much given that it wouldn't have seemed possible a few years ago.
Hope everyone got home safely and hope to see you all next year.
It was great to see everyone so glad we managed to make it,just a shame the band meet after seemed to be a little disorganised. Never the less we had an amazing time.
Thoroughly enjoyed my weekend in Dublin! Great place - has left me wanting to go and spend some more time visiting there - and another BTR gig perhaps?!
I stood further back as found a good spot there with room to stand comfortably and the sloping floor made for a reasonable view. The sound was good further back and with Bob being so tall I could see him quite well! There was a good atmosphere around, though a bit of grumbling when more and more phones started to appear at one point ...
I agree with ArrGee that Mondays was so much better with everybody singing rather than the awkward silence - just seemed a nice touch that brought everybody together.
Didn't have time to rate the loos! Most unusual for me! But I couldn't really get out and didn't want to miss any of the gig - or the signing of t-shirt afterwards. Again I agree with ArrGee about thinking all the band were going to be there to sign them. Not devastated about it - there may be a future opportunity perhaps - as I was over the moon to see Bob again and get a photo taken to replace the previous attempt at one! He seemed very happy to pose and have a few words and a joke so it was all worthwhile. However, I do feel that other less fortunate people who paid a heftier price for the t-shirts may well have felt a bit cheated - not to mention the guy who had another Rats t-shirt with him and got chucked out. It did seem a bit chaotic - the security guys obviously weren't really sure what was happening, and quite understandably just wanted to go home!
Good to have a drink afterwards in Brogans with Mel and Michelle. Rounded the evening off very nicely. And many thanks to Suss for arranging the purchasing of t-shirts.
I only got Bob's signature too. Not the end of the world, but would have been nice. Maybe they think it is all about Bob. It isn't. And that's coming from me! Mondays was a really nice touch, it just fitted well. None of the cheering etc, which doesn't even make sense.
Here are my photos from my trip as well as the gig. *** Warning, there are loads.

Thanks, I'm so used to people disagreeing with me!
Maybe that was the plan, don't sign the T shirts, so we all come back again...

As you know I went to see The Rats on numerous occasions sans Geldof, so in my case it is about the band not the man. But I would concede that for many Geldof is more important.
I am off to see The Stranglers in the new year and I don't really give a monkey's that Hugh Cornwell isn't there. That said I could never imagine The Damned without Dave Vanian or Captain Sensible nor Happy Mondays without Shaun or Bez nor Pulp sans Jarvis even if all the other original/key members were in place.
Regardless if it is more about Bob, it would have been nice to have got more than just his signature. I did have the opportunity for the others, but the timing wasn't correct. It was a great gig though and yes the Mondays singalong was great. Made me wonder what is the desired reaction for the band there.
Jules your photos are great, I have still to sort mine. Still trying to fix my sick laptop, not to mention my sick body! Will share a link when I get sorted.

I've heard Bob say that people cheer during the time lapse in Mondays, in a rather quizzed voice. It seems he makes no sense of it either. Surely, they must have liked the sing along.
The abiding memory that I will take away from this concert will be the many hundreds of Rats fans singing I Don't Like Mondays right up to chorus. If only they had they left the crowd to finish it off rather than doing the reprise as per the album mix.
Absolutely terrific night and one of the greatest live experiences I've ben a part of.
Unlike many here, I'd never seen the Boomtown Rats in the 70s/80s (my first gig was Bon Jovi, 1990), and had only seen the reunited Rats once - Vicar Street, 2013. So the excitement on seeing them one more time, and in my favourite venue, was amazing.
I love the music so much (became a fan and purchased the albums in 2005), and being there, near the front, while Bob, Simon, Gary and Pete played those famous and beloved songs was quite sensational. I thought the sound was perfect (first track or two the guitar was super loud in the mix though), the atmosphere was simply amazing - towards the end I moved back, and unlike any other gig, the atmosphere at the back was as joyous as it was toward the front; everyone singing and dancing. The balconies seemed to be on their feet and cheering the hometown boys on. It really was a special night, quite magical actually.
Too many highlights to mention; it will suffice to say I agree wholeheartedly with the Hot Press review, on that night, they were indeed the greatest rock band in the world. Friends of mine went to Whitesnake/Def Leppard, not for a moment did I second-guess my choice to attend the Boomtown Rats - the experience was so sublime I would make the same choice again and again.
No 'Joeys On the Street Again' but every single other song, even show finale 'The Boomtown Rats' was thrilling to witness.
I arrived to Dublin late, otherwise would've gladly met up with some fellow fans from this forum; next time :)
Amazing show, and what a band - really, what a band! They were rocking!!
