Single Mix Vs Album Version

This is most likely common knowledge to the fans here, so forgive me if this ground has been covered; I'm not well versed at all in the differing mixes available and am very interested in your thoughts

Basically, was listening to 'Dave' recently, and was struck by how different the mixes were for the album and the single. While the same song, there were some arrangements tweaks, and what feels like a slightly different lead vocal for both. The single version accentuates the keyboards and has a cleaner sound. I love both, but the album version for me is the definitive take. They did a wonderful live version also.

'Mary of the Fourth Form' - album version can seem quite dense sometimes, but the single version is more dynamic and punchy. Great to have both.

These two seem to have pronounced differences, and it is definitely worth it to have both, but of their other singles, are there more with these kinds of differences? Some may simply be an edit of the album cut, these I'm not so interested in, I'd prefer the full length versions if it's just an edit we're talking about.

Many thanks for any thoughts

I'd say same about Someone's Looking at You single version being more punchy, with the album version slightly more "gentle", highlighted in the intro and outro.

With Dave on the remasters, the single version is the original UK album version and the album version is some unknown mix.  Also there is a third mix which was the real single version.  And that's not even considering Rain.  You need to have the vinyl to figure out what is what.

Single version of Mary is a better mix and is far more dynamic.

Personally, I tend to prefer the single mixes.  Clockwork,  Mondays (especially), Banana Republic (really far superior),  Elephant's Graveyard and House on Fire all benefit from being abridged.  I also prefer the slightly amended Rat Trap single lyrics.  The only exception is Someone's Looking which seems to have too much removed, including the guitar solo and  final line which I am sure just fades out.

Always thought it was a shame with all these hits compilations released in the last ten years that none had all the original single mixes.

Thanks very much for the info; and ArrGee, just to confirm - 'Elephants Graveyard' and 'House on Fire' are just edited versions?

'Mondays' single mix far superior?? Are there differences in particular that make it stand out?

'Banana Republic' is a favourite of mine, the single mix is far superior? I must seek this one out also then :)

Where does one get these single mixes; previous Hits compilations? I must hear these!!

The best place to get them is eBay!  However if you rip the audio off the Someone's Looking DVD that has all of them bar Rat Trap.  Also most likely all the single mixes are on You Tube/Vimeo videos.

Ignoring live versions, from my somewhat reliable memory (but please correct if anyone knows better)...

#1 - Same on LP, DVD, 7", 12"

Mary - Just the two known versions

She's So Modern - LP, CD and 7" the same, but there is a re recording on Drag Me Down 12"

Clockwork - only on 7" and DVD

Rat Trap - only on 7"  - with NO GRIME HERE PADDY scratched on the run off; Not sure if on DVD, but on all the Top of the Pops performances on You Tube.

Mondays - only on 7"; however there are some 70s compilations CDs such as the Old Gold compilations which have it. Most notable difference is lack of reprise;  also on DVD

Diamond Smiles - Not sure, think it is identical on 7" and LP/CD.

Someone's Looking - On 7" and 12" and DVD

Banana Republic - three mixes (Mondo mix; Loudmouth mix; Ratsh!ts mix);  Ratsh!ts mix is original single mix; also on DVD; very different in all three versions

Elephants Graveyard - only on 7" and DVD; abriged

Million Years - Not sure, think it is identical on 7" and LP/CD.

House on Fire - only on 7" and DVD; abridged

Charmed Lives  - Not sure, think it is identical on 7"/12" and LP/CD. Not on DVD

Dave - This is a tricky one;  I would have to dig out the 7" (picture and non picture), 12", compilations, the UK album in vinyl and CD and also the DVD to be sure of what is what.

Tonight/Hold of Me/Drag Me Down - Not sure, think all are identical on 7"/12" throughout, except aforementioned US remix of Drag Me Down

Thanks very much ArrGee; I of course have the Someone's Looking DVD; I haven't watched the promo videos in an age but of course...as you mentioned, the single mixes would be accompanying those promos! I shall be watching tonight!

I never knew they recorded 'She's so Modern' for the Drag Me Down 12"; also never realised Rat Trap had some different lyrics.

The 'Dave' mixes are interesting as it does sound like two different takes; Geldof's vocal mixed in a way that is does seem like a different take.

If you have the DVD and want to make a CD or just put them on your iPod (or similar)

There seem to be many Dave mixes.   If I get bored in the next two or three weeks I will dig them all out and figure out what is what, but in my opinion the original LP version (shown as single version on remaster) is the definitive version and I believe it is the one used for the video.

I think all the single edits are superior, but not sure about SLAY; single and album mixes both excellent in their own way. Single mix definitely punchier.

Drag me Down 7" different to 12" and album mix. Extra set of 'De De De De's' etc front load the latter mixes and 'I love you' and 'I need you' on longer mix, 'I love you' is dropped for the single.

Charmed Lives single different to album. Longer playout.

Only ever detected one mix of Diamond Smiles, Million Years, Hold of Me.

I think some subtle differences on Tonight mixes have been highlighted elsewhere on here but I couldn't tell you what they are.

House on Fire 7" definitely worth searching out. Playout goes on for around 100 seconds with 'like a House on Fire ' repeated 15 times to fade with brass transpositions whereas you hear less than half a dozen on album mix but do get the 'white angel and devil ' verse.

ITLG Dave song on the LP is not the same as the Dave song that kicks of the start of this cd,on the remastered CD of the same name. It does say this is the Album version. But on the LP I have, it does not sound anything like this one?

Tonight was abridged by removing four bars or from near the end of the song.
