Some great tunes that went into the pop void are discussed in some detail on this fascinating site, include what this chap thinks is the Christmas hit that never was: Never in a Million Years. Strange to think he came in as a 15 year old to the Rats, when he would have been ripe for it at 12/13 with Rat Trap as I and I'm sure many others were.

Suppose those jingling sleigh bells did add a touch of festivity to it. Strange release date when you think about it. Could have waited to January 82, dropped the bells, thought about putting the group name on the single sleeve together with the song title and who knows?

Squeeze's incredible Some Fantastic Place which limped to 73 is also discussed here as well as others that 'got away' when they should have been massive.

I wouldn't say there are too many great tunes from the looks of it.

Adam Lambert to sing a new version of the song?  He's done damage to the Queen back catalogue that you'd never thought possible.  Hopefully he never gets near a Rats song or worse still becomes Geldof's replacement.

And Five Star missing out on a hit?  I am still amazed The Jackson family haven't sued them for impersonation.  Eliot Fletcher has it right.

Last seen on The Voice UK or at a field near you.  Most likely on the same bill as The Rats...

Denise is currently touring the UK throughout 2015 with her siblings Stedman, Doris & Delroy performing at 80's revival gigs.

No way am I going near Brentwood this summer.

I suppose by their very definition, 'great tunes' are more likely to have made their way into the top 40 than also-rans. Still, there are some I'd be happy to regard as having slipped through the net and the Rats and Squeeze songs highlighted are two, of a few I've come across on intothevoid, which qualify.

As regards Five Star, the least said the better.

I would guesstimate that about 50% or more of the singles I have/had would be outside the top 40.  Pulp's Razzmatazz made #80 and it's surprising how badly recent singles fared by pretty major bands. Royal Blood's highest is #43; Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys rarely break into the top 40 in the last five or six years. Even with The Rats, about a third of the singles didn't hit the Top 40.   All that matters is you get to hear it and you get to like it.

As an aside, the album chart is reassuringly retro.  Bowie in the top two slots and Elvis, Cilla, Fleetwood Mac and ELO in there with heaps of other golden oldies.  Elton John will be back next week.  Seriously, he will!
