Festival Director, Jason Jopson, says:"We pay a lot of attention to the feedback and suggestions from our regular festivalgoers and think we've come up with a 2016 line up that will make everyone happy. Friday will be our usual fun party night. Saturday will spotlight ska and pop, and Sunday will be an 80s rewind for the whole family." The name of the main headliner for Saturday will be released soon.
Not 100% sure Boomtown Rats will headline this. If you go onto Tony Hadley's Facebook page and the festival website and onto the Boomtown rats Facebook page the poster Has Tony Hadley as headlining with ABC second last on and then Boomtown Rats. So be very careful when booking a ticket thinking you get a headline slot by this Boomtown Rats as you may not. They dintu really headline 80's festivals which this festival looks like it is.

I wonder how many complaints they will get after Bobby Boomtown turns the air blue? Do they know what they are letting themselves in for?
Madness to headline Saturday?
Never did like Madness Just do not nor do I get this so called band. What's that song they sing Embarrassment Some's them up. There are some songs you don't mess with and they killed. It must be love. Great song until they got there hands on it
I loved Madness! Obviously not as much as the Rats though But I thought they were a breath of fresh air - just really fun to watch and listen to! They do have some very clever lyrics, and I think they were a really strong band. Some of the songs seem quite light and frivolous but actually they managed to evoke a lot of different emotions, well certainly for me.
Ha ha! That's me - I'm VERY child like! I just find them fun, but interesting how different music appeals to different people isn't it? I just sometimes like music that is lighter and makes me happy without being too intense. I will even admit to having fond memories of Shaddup Your Face (SORRY!) - just because I will always look back at my Mum singing (and dancing!) along to it, and that makes me smile.
The BTRs really reach me through the lyrics and energy of the music, but sometimes I just like to be made happy by listening to music rather than intellectualising about it too much. A current favourite is listening to Bring Me Sunshine by Morecambe and Wise every Friday when Chris Evans plays it - it even makes my teenage son smile so I'm all for child like music!
Hear, hear That's a nice one about ur mummy. Don't get me wrong I love all sorts of music Myself some great band's present and passed. Sweet T Rex Beatles Lennon Undertones Stiff little fingers Saw doctors ext ext. As you say what ever makes you happy and if a band can do that to any one then In my opinion they have done there work
I'm neutral about them. Some songs like 'My name is Michael Caine' and 'House of Fun' I really liked but others like their cover version of 'It must be love' and the absurd instrumental 'Return of Los Palmas 7' I didn't.

Looks like you were right. Not really for the whole family, not unless they wanted to include the black sheep. I don't think they will be asked back. Wish I went though!
Geldof criticised fans for wearing "wall to wall f***ing Primark"
Hoards of disgruntled fans left Brentwood Festival early after headliner Bob Geldof insulted the crowd for wearing clothes from Primark before launching into an expletive-laden political rant.
The singer, who appeared with his band the Boomtown Rats on Sunday evening (July 16) of the three-day event, offended festival-goers so much several left before his most well-known hit, I Don't Like Mondays.
As the band came onto the stage, he shouted: "We don't do Abba. We don't do Robbie ******* Williams."
He then stopped after one song and began a tirade comparing the family event to a rock and roll concert.
"Brentwood, we are the Boomtown Rats," he screamed.
"We are mega. And you are Brentwood. How do we know that you are Brentwood and we are mega? Because I am wearing a **** off pretend snakeskin suit and [they] are wearing **** off cowboy shirts even though they live in London."
Referring to one of his band, he said: "This [guy] who you'll remember as a slim handsome young ladis wearing a **** off purple suit with an elasticated waistband so that when he gets even ******* fatter you won't notice. On the other hand Brentwood, you are wearing wall to wall ******* Primark. This is a rock and roll festival. When you come to a rock and roll festival you dress for a rock and roll festival. You can never be too careful. That song we just did was written at the end of 1975 when Margaret Thatcher became leader of the opposition. What are you booing for? We're in ******* Brexit land here guys. Yeah, we're Irish, we're still in Europe. It's just as well we wrote that song because this year is about Theresa May. She's gonna do you in. There's always someone looking at you Brentwood."
Later, during a performance of I Don't Like Mondays, he paused and stayed silent for 90 seconds.
One festival-goer, who left with her husband before the finale said: "They sounded pretty dreadful, especially after just hearing the fantastic voice of Tony Hadley, and of course they have a very limited back catalogue. We were just thinking we probably wouldn't bother staying to hear I Don't Like Mondays as it didn't look like it would be worth the wait when Bob launched into an extraordinary, expletive laden rant. As he launched into another dreadful song, we, along with hoards of others, headed for the exit and I found myself in a queue to leave in the middle of the headline set. All around you could hear mutterings from fed up festival-goers of how disgusting he was and 'how dare he'. It was a shame he had marred what was otherwise a fabulous day out."
Festival co-ordinator Laurie Edmonds apologised for the language, but said it was "part of the act."
She said: "They're a punk band. You expect them to be a bit controversial and he got a reaction from the crowd. People know he speaks his mind. That's just what they do but they were a fantastic punk band and we thought it would go down well with our crowds. We know he's a bit of a lightning rod and people will have strong reactions to him."
She explained that organisers had made a conscious decision to put the act on post-watershed.
She continued: "We were disappointed that there was so much swearing. We want this to be a family event and it would have been nice if it was toned down. Some people who felt it was offensive made the decision to leave. We're truly sorry if people were offended. It wasn't our intention in booking them. We have had a couple of complaints but we've equally had people saying they were one of the best sets all weekend. There were still several thousands of people who stayed to the very end and were asking for encores."
He did the same at Wellowfest. It was humorous and those close enough to the stage could see his smiles. People just don't know him. As for "limited back catalogue" - says it all really.
Everyone who went said it was. brilliant. Usual cr@p.
On here or on fan pages maybe, but clearly from above NOT everyone who went. Can vouch for fact people left mid set, even from the front. I think article and reply is fair comment to be honest; just as many loved it but will always always upset some.
I've got no problem in conceding not everyone's cup of tea.
Yes there were plenty that left , i don't think that Bob suited the aged Towie set !!!. I too have seen what the Chronicle have said but they are only repeating the words and comments of those that don't get the Rats, i notice that there no comments from the fans who did enjoy it enthusiastically.
My last point is the same rags comment re Mr Hadley , were they listening whilst he crucified U2 tracks ? absolutely awful . His other stuff i.e. old Spandau tracks sounded like Spandau so if you like that sort of stuff fine but please leave the U2 stuff to U2.
Mr H was ok if you like that sort of thing but the U2 cover was tooooo much.
Yes the paella took its toll, being honest i had the best bet with the extra dry burger, web had a £6 pulled pork roll that as about 1/4" thick and wilf , well i don't think he will be touching paella again. !!!
I see the Mail Online is taking the Essex Chronicle story and embellishing it as only they can. Funny that they are running this days after the actual concert. Worth reading through to see the several boots being put in. Well they say bad publicity is better than no publicity, and the Rats and Geldof in particular seem to be in for a pasting. I think the writer Emma Glanfield did a similar job on Geldof and the Rats a while back.
It was the same at Carfest North last year when he came on stage. Chris Evans had asked him not to swear as it was a family event, but he can't help himself garner publicity in what is just an act.
yeh I don't like bob's suit much. hmmmm. grey is quite a sad colour. do you remember when EVERYONE was wearing grey?
oh I dunno
people are so easily offended. it seems to be the age of being offended.
the bob haters banging on about bob being a knobhead and dickhead. I confess to some of them making me chuckle, the ones that were funny but most of it is just childish stuff.
I've already said on one of the threads on here I didn't like his suit much. does he care? probably not. do I care if he doesn't like my clothes? not really. in fact I'd hope we'd have a laugh about it. I'd laugh at his suit and he'd laugh at my hippy primark top dotted in real blood and sweat.
anyway, what would happen if we all boycotted primark? wouldn't that mean people in asia going from **** to utterly devastatingly ****, at least in the short term?
hmmm nah.... there's no obvious answer and I don't think its not buying the clothes. think of all those redundancies. surely?
I see he's in the sun today getting a ribbing due to his wee mouth
It's being picked up by the rest of the gutter press now. Five days later. I bet the story changes in each one.
The woman reviewing the papers on RTE Radio One's Morning Ireland show said the Irish Daily Mail has a feature today called ' I Don't Like Primark', about Geldof and the Brendwood gig.I wouldn't be offended in the slighest-it's just journalists taking things too literally. Amazingly yesterday when I last checked the Mail Online there were over 2,300 comments re Geldof and the Brendwood gig. Most were anti Geldof. Some were amusing like the one which said Geldof doesn't like Mondays because it's bath day.
A lot of the comments are just out of spite because Geldof is so wealthy. The Newark local paper gave the Wellowfest a good, if short, review. The two Coventry papers gave the Cov gigs great reviews, and about 15,000-20,000 were at Coventry. None of the crowd seemed in the slightest bit offended or walked away when Bob did his now almost routine Primark spiel. I think most Rats fans would be pretty hard headed and not easily offended- what are people supposted to wear in the middle of summer except a t shirt or shirt anywar. Rock festivals are not exactly Derby day or last night at the Proms.

Wow ArrGee was right. Well The Brendwood Festival has gotten it's name into the papers and of course it wasn't dreary old Spandau Ballet but the magestic Boomtown Rats with Bob Geldof who can take a bow.
Echoes of the wall to wall black t-shirts comment at Rebellion last year which allegedly led hordes to depart. On that occasion as I recall it coincided with another band starting in next hall.
Don't doubt a few left in response to 'insults' on both occasions, but if the percentage were reported the story amounts to nothing.
Totally agree with Noel that any publicity is good publicity - might even appeal to the yoof more if Rats gets seen as rebellious.

This piece from the Irish Times about the gig reaction (pro Geldof) is worth reading:http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/why-bob-geldof-s-primark-moment-was-a-rat-trap-1.2731145
The increasingly obnoxious Amanda Platell has been opining in today's Daily Wail about this episode. She uses the loaded word 'ageing' to get Bob's 64 or so years on the planet across, as though she is the first human being to stop the clock and therefore the ageing process. Even a new born baby ages.
She must be kidding herself if she thinks her botched attempts at cosmetic surgery fool us into thinking that stupid bloated fish face and lips appearance means she has stopped 'ageing'.
I cannot stand how this woman sits in her high castle, wagging her finger at everyone week after week.
Still features running in the papers about this 'incident'. One in The Independent, and one in the Irish Independent. Funny how Bob's sense of humour is reported as him having 'yelled at fans...'. Seems the Independent didn't even bother to listen to the video before putting their spin on the story.
Just getting my t-shirt printed up for Friday's gig....
Should get some done up for the merch stall. And take about 20% for the idea. Rats played Fredericks of Hollywood back in the day. Maybe the will do a Primark lingerie appearance somewhere?
12:15 Funky Voices 13:25 The Renegade Blues Brothers 14:45 The Signatures 16:00 Exposé 17:45 ABC 19:30 Tony Hadley 21:30 The Boomtown Rats
Brentwood Saturday (14 July 2018) looks good this year with Squeeze and Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals).
Exposé play again, so I guess there is room to squeeze (cough cough) another top act into the 6pm or 7.30pm slot.
Got an early bird ticket for £27. Last train to London at 23:45.
Went along to this on Saturday and it was the least festival like festival I have been to. Which was a good thing! (FYC reference) Clean toilets, very few drunks, good food, all the things you den't get at your average rock festival. Loads of fold up chairs everywhere was a pain especially near the stage. Don't know if it was the case two years ago but it was very LOUD! I was at the front for Squeeze and during the soundcheck they hit the bass drum and I was blown back by the gust. By the first song finished we (along with lot of others) all went back about 50 metres, just couldn't cope!
Have to say Roland Gift is a magnificent singer.
Doubt Rats will ever return, but if they have a decent line up next year then I will be back.
Assume the Rats' set was as per? Songs punctuated with usual banter?
Ain't got a clue what the Rats are doing. They played a couple of dates in the last few days but no reports.
Still a small preview of their support slot can be found here https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/the-boomtown-rats-in-the-long-grass-of-marlay-park-37088725.html

Apparently, Bob Dylan performs with them these days!!!
Interestingly whilst Bobby Boomtown didnt slag off the Dagenham audience for their sartorial style, there were a few profanities, but the crowd just lapped it up. The kids to the left of me, no more than ten years old, were laughing at the various fcuks & tw@ts. And no one seemed to care. Maybe just a less sensitive urban audience
Also a bit later in the day at Dagenham. There were people with young kids leaving even when I arrived around 7pm so slightly fewer potentially offended, but have to agree those there were more amused than shocked. Good to see you again by the way.

Yeah, good to see you again. Been a long time. I did drop you an email ahead of the weekend, but you must have missed it. Needed a drinking buddy in Ware. Should meet ahead of Palladium show, assuming you get a ticket

From earlier in the thread, Rats were on later in Brentwood. 9:30pm. And from what I saw loads more kids than when I went to Brentwood for Squeeze. Though I left early for that one as it was too loud.
Ah fair enough. I didn't read back and memory deceived me as it was probably lighter. Might even have been thinking of Latitude which was earlier in day.

I didnt go to Brentwood as it was on my wedding anniversary and more significantly just outside the M25, where I rarely venture. But I remember it being brighter when I saw Squeeze a couple of years later as it was 15th July rather than 15th August. A month makes a bit of a difference. Maybe your memory isnt so bad
