Just had the Story of 1982 and Big Hits of 1982 on BBC4 so the station continues with the now familiar format of rerunning the weekly TOTP episodes from yesteryear towards and over each weekend starting on Referendum Day at 7.30pm with Peter Powell introducing the 07/01/82 show. The Human League are still at number 1, with other acts including the Mobiles, Shakatak and Jon and Vangelis being shown. As Mike says, we should see the Rats around September with two performances of House on Fire.
Human League still at number one. Surprised Yellow Pearl didn't do better. After all it gets played every single week! Liked the Mobiles with Drowning in Berlin.
John Peel and Tommy Vance present shows respectively from 4/2/82 and 11/2/82 this Thursday and Friday on BBC4. Acts include XTC, OMD, Soft Cell and Haircut 100.
Only one show this week, on Friday at 7.30pm, BBC4.
Mike Read presents the Jets, Toni Basil, UB40, Tight Fit, George Benson, Madness and the Jam amongst others. We are now in the middle of February 1982.
Simon Bates this Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC4 presents Tight Fit (2nd week at number one with The Lion Sleeps Tonight) and the Associates, amongst others. Haircut 100 continue their climb up the charts with Love Plus One and Bow Wow Wow continue to go Wild in the Country.
Meantime, a certain group from Ireland this week releases House on Fire which will debut at 66 shortly, before climbing to 44, at which point they are offered a slot on the show to make up for being criminally overlooked in regards to the Elephants Graveyard (Guilty). This will help propel the song to 30. This meant Mercury could get to work on the stickers shortly to go on V Deep, stating 'includes the top 30 hit House on Fire'.
It will later get a further airing on TOTP at 24, which oddly assists in a drop of 2 places to 26 a week later. Both shows will air, being presented by Peter Powell, who appeared obsessed with the record, and Simon Bates. Then that is that until 1994 for the Rats, although Bob will appear in 1984 with Band Aid and 1986 in his own right.
Bob Geldof and Nick Heyward both on Top of the Pops last night. Both appeared on the same Pop Quiz show in '82 at the same time if I recall right. In the end, not a Fantastic Day though for Bob and the Rats as that is the last of the group appearing on TOTP. A few other major acts of the late 70s/early 80s would also have their last appearance this year such as Blondie and Adam and the Ants, although Adam, Deborah Harry and Bob would also appear as solo acts in the years to come. The Jam split in 82 but Paul Weller would return in a different format. The class of 77to82 were class, but as Bob has said, maybe a 5 year chart shelf life for most is correct and you can't hope for much more.
Just watched totp with the rats other than them and haircut what a load of tosh people seemed to have gone mad with their record purchases but hey I'm biased anyway
Yeh I agree can't believe foster and Allen and chaos nearest higher than rats what's that all about? 1982was a mad year for music so much guff in the charts really wished they had done better and maybe charmed lives ( which in my opinion was their worst single) might've fared better it was hardly played on radio at the time
I got V Deep in April 82 and was trying to figure out what would be a good third single. I thought at the time they should risk Skin on Skin or Talking in Code, which sounded a bit OMD/Depeche Mode and I thought would fit well. I least expected Charmed Lives or The Little Death or Storm Breaks as single 3. And of course they went with Charmed Lives. You will remember Beacon 303 Mike, and they played it one night on 1922 (so called as the show went out from 7pm to 10pm) and they were scathing about it with a 'WTF has happened' type slot and people were phoning in and all sorts! They then confirmed they would not play the song again.
If you're going to use 'Nah nah nah's' they either work very well as on SLAY or Diamond Smiles play out or they sound like something the sixth form band put together in an hour as they do on CL.
I've got skin on skin 12inch from the USA it would've been a fab single so I be got it any way and still play it often as I still love this song it has talking in code on beside so win win
Interesting article on Foster and Allen, currently competing with the Rats as House in Fire and A Bunch of Thyme ascend the lower reaches of the Top 30.
Half the show almost had an Irish flavour as these two acts and then the Nolans were shown one after another the other week.
We move to the 15th April 1982 this coming Friday at 7.30pm on BBC4 with David Jensen introducing Roxy Music and Simple Minds amongst others. Losing 12 shows this year to Yew Tree and we will see Mike Smith (RIP) do his first TOTP later in the year.
I didn't bother watching totp after this in1982 I think I watched again in 1986 when Bob solo was on totp watched other shows they were on in1984 & q1985 etc
I used to watch fairly often, it being my era so to speak, but looking back so much of it was dross.
I recall when the Rats hit 50 in 1984 with DMD looking in the paper that Thursday and scanning the guest list in the listing hoping the words 'The Boomtown Rats' would leap out and induce an adrenaline rush as it was not totally unheard of for an act just outside the 40 to get on. House on Fire was first shown at 44. Obviously it was not to be.
I think it mightve made a difference if they had been on totp with drag me down I know it had a it of AirPlay and the dos were quite responsive by saying the rats are back etc but it was not to be as you say

Not a fantastic day for the Rats. House on Fire slips from 26 to 29.
The ironic thing is at the time it dropped to29 it was still selling quite well at some places we run out at my store and got1 copy in after about a week when it had dropped even further
V Deep had now been released so a fair few will have thought that by getting the album, they'd get House on Fire, thus assisting in the demise of the 7 inch.
Richard Skinner this Thursday introduces Spandau Ballet recovering their position with Instinction, Yazoo, Hot Chocolate and Simple Minds amongst others, BBC4 7.30pm.
As House on Fire leaves the top 75, and the Rats prepare to release Charmed Lives as a new single, Soft Cell, Duran Duran and Genesis grace us with their presence on TOTP. Tonight at 7.30pm on BBC4.
Dexys are now knocking on the door of no.1 as Irene Cara sits at the top with Fame. Sad to see what others are writing about Bob, as the Rats complete their final performance on TOTP in 1982:
Dexys now firmly at the top. However, I had completely forgotten about Haysi Fantayzee and the irritatingly catchy 'John Wayne is big leggy'. We all knew what it was about, but the BBC had yet to get into censorship mode it would seem.
Yeh I bought the album the insert had the female singer topless in it it was a dire lp I must've lost my mind ( there was obviously no hope for me ) obviously lost it when rats hadn't charted
Deep into October 1982 with Musical Youth and Culture Club selling well. 2 more shows tonight and tomorrow with John Peel presenting with some regularity at the moment.
