I'd love to go to Portsmout to see the Rats. However it won't be this one. How can a brillinat band like the Rats be so low down on the bill? Waste of time really, at a very un rock n roll time of 1.45 pm.

If they are touring/headlining there next year then I'd certainly consider going.

noIt's rare but they do occasionally get silly billing. Isle of Wight and 80s Rewind Henley were two others I've known. It's a bit early.

I wonder how these billings are worked out? Somebody obviously thinks Travis , The Levellers, and Wretch 32 (who?)are more  worthy than The Boomtown Rats.I like The Coral and Manic St Preachers but the others uugh. .I could accept Rats being on just before the Manics, even though the Rats are better but putting  the Rats so low down the bill just shows gigantic musical ignorance.

Sometimes the people that put on these festivals haven't got a clue. Are you going to this Jules?

Jules - leave plenty of time if you are arriving on the day by car. Pompey has terrible traffic problems and if the weather is good it will make it even worse.

Bit of a report from Victorious- it was so early the main stage audience was largely empty as the band started. After the first 2 numbers, the audience really came forward. And the audience were standing and filled the field.

It was an interesting gig- the sound out front sounded great but the monitors were giving lots of acts problems on stage and many singers lambasted the sound man in the wings over the weekend. The band really were heavy on the attitude and it worked a charm. They managed to overcome sound issues and draw the crowd to them at such an early time.

She's Gonna Do You In was the best I've seen it after 9 reunion shows. And they really used it to bring the crowd out of themselves. The set was short but quite different to other recent shows in terms of deliver.

Thanks for the write up, what was the set in the limited time out of interest?

Also, interested to note about the change in delivery etc. What has changed or evolved from your previous visits. I think there's a general perception that apart from dropping tracks the set has been 'same' for 3 years so would be good to acknowledge the subtle differences from someone who's sampled a few over the period.

Hi,

I think for me the main difference seemed to be the attitude of the band. (I think it had been a particularly difficult journey down to Portsmouth- but that attitude and angst they funnelled into the performance. And then became pleased they had well and truly won over the crowd.)

The 'snakeskin suit' banter was about half the length. She's Gonna Do You In was at least 2 minutes longer. But for this crowd seemed to be the song that won them over- it was so heay on attitude. Additional harmonica solo-and general playing to the crowd really seemed to work. It really was

Cheers. Think Do You In is one of those tracks that will always sound better and come 'alive' in concert, bit like Cheap Trick with I Want You To Want Me. Studio versions sound a bit pedestrian after exposure to live sound.

Thanks for  review. At leapardstown there were changes to the lyrics of Close As You'll Ever Be. Not sure if Bob just 'ad libs' these, or even what he was singing, but certainly they are a departure from the album track. In fact I think he does this every time the do Close. I really love it when Geldof goes into one of his mad stream of consciousness moments during a performance.  You can tell he is really living the song.

Just wondering if anyone knows what the last line of Neon Heart is ie the spoken bit just before 'it's just the neon heart..'. at the end of the song? Also can't make out slight variation on the Peel demo version, which I have been playing to death lately ie the last ad libbed/spoken bits.
