Last thing I really expected to find when doing a routine YouTube Rats search. smile I've made a few copies onto usb just in case it mysteriously vanishes from YouTube.

Concert is only 40 mins long so not sure if it has been edited for tv or something? The opening says 'Young Music Show', which I've researched and found to be a Japanese pop programme from the '70's/80's which featured many well known artists including Bowie and Kiss. The programme was produced by NHK TV in Tokyo.

Great concert. I wonder why Go Man Go morphed into Diamond Smiles. Were the 'thunder over Tokyo' and mock Jap words deemed politically incorrect? And I notice Pete Briquette was actually wearing a flu mask on his face! Was he trying to avoid something or avoid passing something on?

I watched this in full last night on the tv via usb. I really liked Nice n Neat, Rat Trap, No 1, Clockwork, in particular. Amused when Bob says at end 'on a night like this I deserve to get....' Japanese fans fail to complete the well known lines so Bob says 'to get kissed at least once or twice' in take off of Japanese accent. Don't think the locals noticed this. smile

Keep It Up was not on the video I watched? I see the FM Radio recording has extras tracks, or more properly the video is edited to omit Wind Chill. Joey,Keep It Up,Blind Date, and Nothing Happened Today. I don't have the radio recording btw.

Not sure about the silly looking Rising Sun type bandanas all the band adopted at one stage. Interesting how the song lyrics were translated into Japanese on the screen. I would think there were lots of 'lost in translation' type errors when that assignment was handed out. smile

Re Go Man Go it's possible the Rats were working on that song at the time. It would be seven months until Mondo Bongo was released so really interesting how a 'Bongo' song turns up on a 'Surfacing' tour. I get the impression that Fingers was a bit out of it, but hey , that's touring. In fact a lot of the lyrics in Go Man Go make reference to life in Japan so it's pretty certain the song was written around the time of the Japanese tour. Thunder over Tokyo ,flu mask etc

Overall it's really interesting to see how so many of Geldofs stage antics still survive and crop up in current appearances. Even the pause in Mondays dates back to before Live Aid.

Anyway writing this because I had not seen this video before and it's nice to add to the collection. Now wonder is there a full version ?

My mistake, sorry - I meant Nice n Neat I least enjoyed, but it was still good. As you suggest, Go Man Go was probably under construction at this time and the lyrics were yet to be devised, finished off yet. I have watched it in full and a very pleasant way to pass 40 mins - certainly not three quarters of an hour too long smile

I got the impression from watching Nice n Neat twice in the last new nights that Geldof is speaking/singing from a deep personal conviction and that the song is important for him. This really comes across in the performance.Anyway it's good to have a live version of this. Infact the song is also on the Boston Live 1980 gig so that's two live versions to be going on with.

I never disliked the song but always found the religious subject matter a bit awkward and maybe too personal for Geldof. Certainly the music is powerful but maybe with different lyrics I would like it more.Funny saying that the song seems to pop into my head on a regular basis. And I do like the 'shoo bob shoo wop ' part at the end. smile

I also got exactly the same impression. He particularly sings the line 'the final truth is there is no truth' with the conviction of an atheist, or at least an agnostic with strong leanings/progress towards atheism.

I really like the song and of course it comes from TFAOS, marginally my most favourite album. Like Million Years to come, there was good use of the 'bop shoo wops' and some incredible drumming from Simon Crowe.

But for me, there was just so much else on this performance that was sheer brilliance. I think actually it was the best performance of Eva Braun I've ever seen. SLAY was also amazing, spoilt some might say slightly by the Jap accent mickey-taking in the last line.

I prefer the album version of Eva Braun.Never liked the way Bob always seems to flatten out the opening lines , while on the album the Eva Braun lines are elongated and the melody rises. Hope you know what I'm trying to say. There is a subtle difference but a difference nonetheless.

Geldof often cuts corners with the live versions and sometimes that can be a bit annoying. That said equally sometimes you find an extra spark/feel in a live version eg Sleep on the Boston 1980 gig than adds a new slant.In general there are good live versions which compliment the studio versions while there are lazy live versions which can be a little irritation and 'careless'.

Wouldn't think SLAY was spoiled by Bobs Japanese mickey take at the end. I though it was amusing (not a member of the pc brigade!)He can take the mickey out of the Irish well enough too so I suppose we shouldn't be over sensitive and looking to be insulted.

Would agree with you there. That kind of thing doesn't bother me and Bob pulls it off well, as he did on the Merv Griffin show taking off a Chinese accent. Just making the point some would find it a bit off, and that's their right to be offended I suppose.

I reserve the right not to be offended and hate it when the Left take offence in my behalf.

Excellent find. Really interesting to see how Go Man Go came about. I love how songs evolve. I wonder how Bobs demos evolved, not being blessed with being the best guitarist, I assume that it was mostly hums? That might mean more involvement by the band...............oh, buts that's another thread.

Certain parts of the gig are still done today, others dropped. Gary Roberts playing the drums on Mondays. I guess once Gerry left, there was no point in Simon coming out front, although it would have been good to see him take centre stage with Bob....even now.

I don't take offence of the fake Jap accent and I don't they did either. It was of its time.

Watched it straight away after reading this thread; it is excellent. Like the Boston 1980 bootleg the band sound terrific. Loved every minute of it, especially Eva Braun and Nice N' Neat.

I dearly need my own copy of this, can anyone share it on weshare? Wonderful to have finally seen this :)

You can download the mp4 by using Ummy downloader or Freedownloadmanagerorg. That's what I've done just in case it vanished from the Net. Glad you enjoyed it.

PS Leopardtown gig was fantastic, not sure if you were there or not.

Thanks for that Noel; i was able download video from youtube using RealPlayer but not anymore. I will try one of those you mentioned.

I wasnt as Leopardstown but was at the Olympia last year and it was an amazing show! Hope to get a ticket shortly if theyre still available for the March show.

Tokyo 1980 was excellent; its great to have 6 pro shot gigs of the band covering the 10 or so years. We just need sonething from the V Deep tour now! Live Rats is glorious Rats; good to have them.

I emailed RTE few years ago re the 1979 'Rats in America' TV special; they have it but due to third party copyright couldnt get me a copy.

CD has several false starts on track 1 - Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero - which indicates someone copied it amateurishly like we would have done a c90, before finally abandoning that track after about 30 seconds then into Clockwork. Rest is as per listing. Some good versions in amongst this setlist as per comments here.

Let me know if that sounds like something you'd want.
