Home and Away - Early Demo Tape
Permalink

Sorry to start this again - I know it has been discussed from time to time here.

Did anyone ever manage to track down a copy of the early demo tape?

I recently got to listen to a copy of a 1980 BBC Transcription disc with a profile of the Rats and it includes a couple of snippets from a demo - including a version of 'My Generation'.  The only live recording I'm aware of, with the Rats doing this song is 'Home and Away'.

I may be putting 2 and 2 together but this makes me think the BBC may have had a copy back in the early 80's (or at least access to a copy).

I tried to contact the BBC to see if they could help but got stonewalled

Don't know if anyone has any contacts in the BBC who might be able to do a bit of digging?

I'd love a copy of this, so if anyone has any ideas, love to dicsuss them with you.

Hi Colin,

Just been doing a bit of research and might have a lead. The Home and Away demos were recorded by a guy called Kieran Fitzpatrick. Jackie Hayden, a prominent Irish music industry figure has an article about his early encounters with Bob Geldof back in the mid 70s before the Rats became famous. Hayden and Fitzpatrick used to attempt to write songs together and it seems at one stage Geldof wanted to form a country-rock band with them.

Jackie Hayden states   In fact I still possess an early cassette bootleg with Little Queenie, Born To Burn and Do The Rat, among others. (original article from October 03)

So it's entirely possible that if you contacted Jackie Hayden via email and let him know that you are interested in the tape he may be able to help you. I presume he is referring to the Home and Away tapes.

Another idea is to try to contact Kieran Fitzpatrick the guy who did the Home and Away  recordings and presumably the cover as he was/is a designer. I think both still are friends with Geldof especially Jackie Hayden.

Full article and info about Jackie Hayden below: Hope this helps-
