Trash Glam Baby - First Reviews
Permalink

Hello,

First of all, I'm very happy with the new song. I liked the opening lyrics straight away. I did feel a bit uneasy with the 'Trash Glam Baby' chorus at first but after listening to the track 4 or 5 times it has grown on me. The opening lyrics did seem sharp and lively. I do really enjoy the guitar sounds and the half time feel cymbals at the start. It does have a reach. I'm very impressed and would gladly go for 4 stars!

(I did miss Fingers on keys. Alan is an excellent musician but in the original rats records Fingers did add a touch of musical class to the recordings.)

I'd be interested to know what other people think.

Totally agree Mike, this was worth the wait. Some great comments on You Tube, where there have been over 500 views since midnight. Wondering when we should get to see the video?

Stereoboard say Trash Glam Baby boasts an earworm of a chorus and has a nostalgic, lo-fi sound recalling the '70s pop and rock scene which the band came up in.  Well put.

Decent enough song with a bit of verve and energy behind it. Like the lyrics, Geldof's great ability to observe a character shows up again. His voice sounds a bit worn and croaky, maybe it's just on this particular song.

This might sound better live.

Certainly shows potential for rest of album though I'm hoping for a lot better.

I'd give it 6.5/10 because I don't feel the overall tune really takes off. Chorus is a little flat and underwhelming but in terms of 'spirit' and attitude its heading in the right direction.

I think it's incredibly good. It has grown on me after repeated listens, now up to 8.5 out of 10. I can hear Suede in there, modified whoa oh ohs from SLAY, shades of Back to Boomtown. I think Alan and Simon contribute magnificently to this with great piano and drum work. The vocals are fine, a 68 year old is not going to sound like a 28 year old. I've nearly worked out all the lyrics but hopefully they'll be published to fill in any gaps. Is she dancing by herself at the 'Moscow' tonight, maybe get burnt dancing too close to the lights? I mean how can I have an adult conversation when they're talking about Trash Glam Nation?

I find YouTube views to be a good gauge of public interest.

As of 11 am Saturday 11 January 4,012 have listened to the song. Not bad in my opinion and that figure should keep on climbing.

I think I listened to it about 8 times and am generally well disposed to it, though still have some reservations. It's not perfect but beats the c**p out of anything on the Ratlife ep.

One guy on Facebook says he listened to it over 30 times.smile

I also find the missus a good gauge of how good a Rats song is. She has listened to it 6 times and mirrors comments on You Tube about it being a return to form. I have listened to it around 20 times.

YouTube views now over 4,500. 153 'likes' and 0  'dislikes'.

If nobody cared there would not be that many people on YouTube checking out the song.

Wonder why the video is not up? Haven't seen one negative comment on YouTube out of 44 responses.smile

Good summing up of the song. Are you happy with it and what marks out of ten would you give it?

Not sure about dalek voice. I think he sounds a bit hoarse and croaky but could be just the type of singing the song is geared for. Like his voice on,say a song like Mary Says. He sounds more emotional.  Same with Dave.

Look the way I see it. Its the Rats and any new song (no matter how good or bad it is} Is fine by me. As I never in a million years this would happen again in my life time. I would put this one in-between Go man Go and House on fire An 8 in my opinion . The more I hear it the more I'm liking it.

I think the number of views in just over 24 hours is remarkable. On YouTube, it looked like one guy was going down the anti Sir thing for some bizarre reason and then was tackled well by an obvious fan and then eventually admitted he liked the song. So as you say Noel, not one negative remark. But where is the video, lyrics etc? Maybe the Birmingham video shoot was not for Trash Glam Baby? Also a lot of unanswered queries about a physical product.

Be interested if you go up a notch Noel from 6.5 after the earworm effect of this fantastic song.

Pretty certain there will be a vinyl single with a b side not on album . I think they are just checking the initial reaction.  Very unlikely a CD single, don't think anyone does that nowadays.

I'm probably  a hard taskmaster and I'll stick with my 6.5/10. For me it doesn't beat anything off ITLG. Seems almost a throwaway song indicating that everything will be ok as long as there's rock 'n roll. A bit like How Do You Do? Thematically rather than musically. Very Mott the Hoople/Roxie Music mid 70s glam rock concerns.

Dont even think the tune is that good. But don't get me wrong. I'm not dissing it, just that I feel a bit more cautious and uninclined to rave about it.  Maybe the vinyl b side will be better. Who knows?

We're in the realms of opinion again, but TGB is far better than most of ITLG. There's much more verve and energy than say A Hold of Me, which was OK lyrically but they sounded down and almost out. You're a hard taskmaster indeed!

I find it easier to relate to A Hold of Me, and find it a better tune. It's more to do with emotional impact of songs than strict 'opinion', but my opinions are formed by how the songs effect my emotions.

Definitely not better than Hard Times or Over Again or Tonight or Dave or Drag Me Down imho. Anyway hopefully there will be tracks I can rave about on the new album.

I...****ing love it. I think it's an excellent return as a single, though it does give me vibes of Back To Boomtown.

Regardless, i've found it hard not to listen to it on repeat, haha.

Plus: Serafina did a great job at the end :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. And because I think Back to Boomtown is really good, it's no surprise I love the vibes carried over to Trash Glam Baby. Who is Serafina?

Serafina Cusack is Pete's daughter. She does the female intro and outro vocals. Pete informed someone  of this on the Rats FB page. That's how I know.

Lookin' good. Amazed that there is not one 'dislike' out of 200 responses. Normally the anti Bob mob make their feelings known about his music or politics , but no derision or vitriol so far!

Expecting a mini spike in figures tomorrow's after Steve Wright Show. I like tracking the YouTube views because they are a good guide to interest in any subject. If there were only a few hundred checking out the song that would tell a whole different story.smile

I couldn't agree with you more Noel. There seems to be 2 entries on YouTube, with the official entry getting over 6500 views. There was one guy, Andi Pandi, who appeared to be trying to get some negativity going, but two obvious fans seems to have put him back in his box!

I wonder if Steve will start and finish the single tomorrow at points which exclude the sh*t lyrics or if there is a sanitised version a la Rat Trap? Also, can we expect TV appearances?

In my opinion. The Rats were the best thing going in the late 70s. And the best thing going now. The songs stand the test of time. So let the so called few have there say. They are the fools at the end of the day. Glad to see the Rats return to form. Long my it last.

As from Facebook.....

Trash Glam Baby

O no
Another **** Saturday night
My jeans dont fit and the money is tight
Adele is working down at the charity shop
Shes got a pair of boots in
So maybe shell swop
For my Biba blouse
And my pink feather boa
Is shedding all its feathers
I dont wanna live no more
I got my diamante and my stick-on stars
I got my New York Dolls
I got my Spiders From Mars

Trash Glam Baby
Its a trash can world
Youre a glitter ball honey
Youre a glitter bomb
Dancing by yourself at the Moth Club tonight
And maybe getting burned
Dancing too close to the lights

In class they teach World Civilisations
I cant get my head around the whole situation
I mean how dja even have an adult conversation
Without talking about Trash Glam Nation

Chorus

Yea Im a Tank Top Terrorist
Im making the scene
My fishnets gotten ladders
All along the seams
Im yer basic vacant youth
If yis know what I mean
It aint Retro
Its just Metro
2017

Another **** Saturday night
Another **** Saturday night
My jeans dont fit
And the money is tight
Another **** Saturday night

Adele is a nice touch as it's name of Darren's partner. Purely coincidental I'm sure

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote in the thread, so little point in me repeating it! It's definitely better than the Ratsh!t ep.  It's better than singles like Charmed Lives,  Diamond Smiles and Million Years.

Best new song I have heard this year.  In fact, best new song I have heard this decade.

Wonder if anything will better it in the next 3,640 days...

The one thing I do disagree with Noel on is the lyrics (I don't like them). Also the subject of the song is pretty retro, and the glam rocker I think of most likely to have performed a song like this is err Gary Glitter.

Now Argee, normally your posts are quite considered - but to even suggest Gary Glitter would perform this song is ridiculous.

If you look at the styles throughout the decades you had the 50's/60's 70's (with many many styles) and 80's even 90s all with different competing styles that kids emulated. What do kids have now? The 2010's were no different to 2000's which were largely no different to the 90's.

So yes, retro, but that is what kids will do. Search for something in the past. I think the lyrics are fine -

I think a bit of 70s glam style saxophone would go really well with the track, blasting out a prolonged note on the choruses. Maybe something for consideration live if they happen to have one for Rat Trap and Joey (often the case for London or Ireland dates).

I would say the 1990s were very different to nowadays.  As I got married and started having children at the end of the century, everything that has happened since has passed me by.  I can barely name a #1 single post 2000.

The first official video has gone unlisted again. You will find it with the view count you were expecting and lots more comments, by following the link I posted when I first became aware of it.

I suspect the same has happened to the first official audio listing, which was showing around 14,000 hits yesterday.

Not sure why this is happening.

Friday 4pm, it had changed to 77 views and 1 comment (from about 20 in am)

All those people who bothered to give positive comments just vanished into the ether. Weird and annoying when this happens.

A number of reviews now on Amazon, all 5 stars, including this one seemingly from the US :

'' On this, their first new music since 1985, the Rats have managed a difficult feat: sounding modern and classic at the same time. This sounds like classic Boomtown Rats, with a modern slant. So excited for the new album, "Citizens of Boomtown" out in March. Hoping for a few US tour dates as well.''

Follow this link for the unlisted audio, where there have been over 14,000 views. Combined with the public audio, were talking over 20,000 audio hits. I cant understand why theyre sort of splitting the vote like this. There must be method in their madness.

Unlisted You Tube videos cannot be searched for, but unlike private videos, can be accessed by following a link.

Great going. It's astonishing that Radio 2 has Bob in for the afternoon, Steve Wright says the single is brilliant and then they ignore it for the rest of the month. Maybe the release of the vinyl (well predicted, Noel) will provoke interest. Release by drip feed seems to be the strategy?

This track gets better and better each time I listen to it, if the rest of the album is as good as this we can look forward to doing the Rat 2020 style

Not sure why the vinyl was not released on same day as the digital version. They might have shifted a lot more with the initial rush of enthusiasm and goodwill.

Don't  know why people are surprised about a vinyl release, its what most bands worth their salt do with the resurgence of interest in said format. These are collectable and likely to be purchased at gigs as well as online store.

Maybe lyrics  was the reason song was not played on radio. Bob was on radio in Midlands/Birmingham this morning so have to catch up with what he said.smile

I would recommend you listen to WHO.  It is an amazing LP.. Can't wait until 26 march for my Brighton trip. Will listen to Quadrophenia on the way down on the err 1:25 and  The Rats when I get there.  Might have a little blast of Waterloo by Abba at the end of the gig.  Most likely when I am running to the station during the Rats encore of the eponymous song...

...gonna be a good day out!
