Neil Hannon celebrates 30 years as The Divine Comedy performing ten of his records in full across a five-night residency. In 1990 musical history was made when a twenty-year old Neil Hannon signed his first record deal and began releasing one glorious album after another under the name The Divine Comedy. 30 years, twelve magnificent albums and hundreds of spellbinding shows later, Neil Hannon is considered by many to be a national treasure and one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. Whether your favourite is the much-loved anthem National Express or deep-dives into the esoteric likes of Count Grassi's Passage Over Piedmont, this is a one-time-only chance to immerse yourself in Hannon's imaginative world, as he plays virtually his entire back catalogue, accompanied on stage by a ten piece ensemble.

Luckily I have a ticket for Barbican tomorrow night. First gig since March!
How did it go? What was the social distancing like? Temp taken, masks etc?
Social distancing inside was pretty distanced. We were in row P but there were only 3 rows with people in front, every second row was empty, 3 empty seats to our left and right and the layout was such that there was an uninterrupted view of the stage. Our temperatures were not taken and masks were pretty optional, quite a few were not wearing them during the performance, though they were compulsory on entrance.
The show itself was fabulous, and even though the stage at Barbican is immense, the six members of the band were in fairly close proximity towards the centre of the stage. There was not much movement of the band members, though Neil Hannon did have a lie down on the stage at the end of one of the songs. The set list was mostly the Secret History songs (National Express, Alfie, Something for the Weekend, Songs of Love, Tonight We Fly, Your Daddy's Car) , some more recent singles (Absent Friends, To Die A Virgin, A Lady of a Certain Age, Norman & Norma) along with a couple of less known songs. Only shame was it only lasted just over an hour.
Hopefully he can return next September to play the whole back catalogue.

I listened to Charmed Life once on YouTube. A good song compared to the plural version
Although some would say twee, I think Everybody Knows is also good, Generation Sex tremendous and Pollen Count worth a few listens. Hannon is expressive and intelligent lyrically and I have time for this band so I will check out their latest offerings. 60 mins is a bit short though.

Generation Sex was probably the most notable omission given he plays it at most gigs. Including covers, he has played around 200 different songs live down the years.
