Class. Always loved this song. And couldn't understand when it didn't chart. Much better than Drag me down. In my opinion.

Still believe if they had gone first with Drag me Down, they would have charted along the lines of Guilty or House on Fire. There are other better songs on ITLG than Tonight and A Hold of Me, such as Hard Times

Thanks for posting Noel, remember this as if it were yesterday.

I think Tonight is a great song but as always it's a matter of opinion. Way better than Trash Glam Baby. I can't remember this being on YouTube before. Pretty sure it wasn't and would have remembered it for the 'no strangers to chart busting ...' intro.smile

I don't think it has.... I spotted it last night after you and it brought back memories but from the original broadcast not a previous YouTube upload.

Yeah, Peter Powell introduced ORS and Drag me Down was also played. Interview with Bob beforehand who appeared with a rucksack which he said he carried his life around in and Pete asked him what he thought of the Jones Brothers who were also on the show. Bob said not as good as their older brother Tom but the joke was lost on Powell who said 'right' and moved on. Bob also used the line he often wheeled out at the time, that the Rats music was different to what else was about and he was very excited about it and was not just saying this as a band member, he 'would say this even if not in the band'.

This is on VHS and I have nothing to play it on now cry

 Cheers Mike.smile

Just did a bit of research.  They appeared on Razzmatazz in May '84 performing Drag Me Down, but Tonight seems like an earlier appearance,  perhaps February/ March of that year. Rats start at 6.45 mins in.

One of the last great tea-time pop shows, recorded in Newcastle and networked across ITV from the beginning. Tyne Tees had already begun to make a significant name for itself in pop with local shows like The Geordie Scene, Check It Out and Alright Now, but the national network was the target for this outing. Hosted by the shows editor Alistair Pirrie who had among his various female co-hosts the then fourteen year old Lisa Stansfield, along with a noisy audience of teens. Alistair died in 2018, aged 62.

The show had outdoor location numbers as well as indoor clips, either straight performance shots like Top Of The Pops, or little video-ettes with a few visual effects.

The show started off courting anyone who had a record to plug, but eventually it managed to persuade the likes of Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Kate Bush to either make an appearance, or at least make a contribution. It also gave valuable airtime to foreign acts who wouldnt get a chance on Top Of The Pops like Rick Springfield, Inxs and Berlin, and in 1983 they gave space for Seona Dancing, a late blooming New Romantic act featuring singer Ricky Gervais.

In 1985 Capital Radio disc jockey Dave Jensen took over the hosts job, but the show format remained the same with guest celebrity hosts, an interview or two and four or five acts appearing live (although miming). As the show became more popular the promo clips were dropped to make room for more live appearances.

The series was dropped by Tyne Tees so they could devote more time to developing a early evening pop show based on the Independent Local Radio top forty. It would be remembered for taking more chances than most pop shows and was much respected and sadly, one of the last of its kind. It ran from June 1981 to January 1987.

Bob was regularly interviewed on the show and Tonight was performed on 25th January 1984. The performances mirrored single releases, so Drag me Down was performed on 16th May 1984

The Boomtown Rats appeared in March 1982 as well, Bob was interviewed and in April 1982, Paula was interviewed. The show's rival on the BBC was Cheggers Plays Pop.

I was a regular viewer of Razzmatazz, being 13 at the time. A week or two before this appearance, BG popped up on the show for a few seconds, to introduce another band's track or something. I was stunned because I thought the band had split by this point (one has to bear in mind that before the world wide web, information was hard to come by...). I think BG was wearing a long mac (same as on the cover of 'Is that It?' perhaps?) I was absolutely delighted when they soon appeared with brand new track with the promise of a new album, further TV appearances, a tour, etc. A big moment for me this one. Thanks for the memory!
