No I like skin on skin ( although it was a promo single in america) but Eva would be in my top5 alternative singles also Joey another sad story and can't stop

In my opinion. It's well up there. The rat's had some great album tracks that could easily have been singles. I've always wondered why there was only two singles if the 1 st album. Never got that.

True. Cos this album done well for them. Getting to number 6. Again some great tracks on this album that could have made singles

Because Shes So Modern was written and ready to go in January 1978 (see Paradiso track list with 20th Century). Not long after Mary dropped out of the charts, Shes So Modern was released.

Maybe the relative failure of Guilty? Go Man Go and Up All Night (Mondo US) were non-UK singles.

But the relative failure of Guilty (still a reasonable top 30 hit) would be an odd reason to stop all further single releases from the parent album. Mind you, if the principle had extended to House on Fire, the country may have been spared Charmed Lives (apologies to those who like this track and subscribe to the #charmedlivesmatter movement smile ).

Coincidentally, just watched TOTP 1989 and Queen's fourth single from the Miracle album, Scandal, has just limped to 26 also. Didn't stop them later in 1989, releasing a 5th single which topped that, with the Miracle single reaching 21. Bit of a Michael Jackson vibe going on there, surely most people have the album by single 5. Suppose there's the b side counter view.

I think they were a little more desperate at that point.

But further to your point, Blondies third single off Eat To The Beat after the relative failure of Union City Blue and post-Call Me is possibly their second most successful single in the UK. Namely Atomic. Though it totally flunked in the US and only ever made #1 in UK.

Definitely. We know from Tonic how successful the third single can be. All the more reason to pluck a third from Mondo Bongo! I struggle with the 'cold feet after Guilty' theory. Just can't understand why we also didn't get Go Man Go etc...

Man go from Eddington in brum I got one a couple of years ago from someone off forum I can't remember who though but over the moon with mondos3rd single even if it's an import (should say reddingtoms rare records. )

Mike, was the single version the same as the one on the album? I went to Reddingtons once, but mainly Swordfish Records in Needless Alley or Plastic Factory Records on Corporation Street. Lunchtime browsing when I worked in Birmingham city centre in the early 90s. eBay was uninvented at that point!

I never knew this was a single in Ireland until a few years ago on this forum. I never heard it played on the radio and I used to listen to RTE Radio Two, which was the main pop music station. I was a regular 'singles browser' and never came across it, back then nor since.

Might have been a record company decision for WEA in Ireland, obviously somebody thought it was good enough and it was pressed up. UK label was Mercury/Phonogram so likely different strategies. Must have been some licensing agreement in place.

Cant see anything in the lyrics to cause controversy unless the word 'bloody' smile . I agree that it would have made a good single in the much larger UK market as it is much more populous. I have a radio interview with Geldof from back in the day where he claimed the band was a bit overexposed and that it was a good strategy to take a break so that people would not become fed up of them. This makes sense to me.

By the time they released their next single they were yesterday's men. So maybe it was a bad strategy. Up All Night (US Mondo Version) would have been a good single in between LPs. Fans would have bought it because it wasn't available anywhere else and it had a promo video so would have got some MTV exposure. And had it flopped, no one would have noticed...

Used to be said, there's just one alley in Birmingham and even that is needless. Think it's unique in the UK as a street name and goes back to the days when the sewing and rag trade was more key : needlers alley. Or so Vera in the office told me biggrin
