Hello!smile

I'm a long time rats fan and long time lurker on here & other corners of TBR internet. Unfortunately I'm a young fa,  so missed everything the first time round which means I've had several 'holy grail' pieces of content I've hoped for ages would somehow resurface on the internet but never has.

I just thought I would compile the list of things I know exist and would love to see in case somebody happens to have them squirrelled away somewhere!! Or maybe there's other things people would like to find and can add to the list in hopes that they do pop up

  • First infamous appearance & interview on Late Late Show
  • Any subsequent Late Late performances (70s/80s)
  • Appearances on Tiswas/Saturday Superstore/Swap Shop etc - a small handful are on YouTube but there's a lot that aren't (lots of them discussed here - Rats on Tiswas - The Boomtown Rats)
  • Gung~ho music video (??? may or may not exist, alluded to by Johnnie in an interview)
  • Any Live Aid backstage footage
  • (Used to be on YouTube!) Self Aid backstage footage - there's a clip where the announcer says they're the first Irish band with a UK no 1 and Gary says 'what about the bachelors?!'but it has disappeared !!
  • Rest of some of the clips included in the documentary, specifically an interview (?) where Simon is talking about cracking America and footage of them on a baggage claim? Might just be home videos but I would love to see the full things

And generally any missing clips from anything especially TV appearances / interviews from non-Bob band members!

If anybody does have anything hidden away I would be your biggest fan on earth if you'd be able to share it.

That is very kind - I may have to look into getting a VHS player too at this rate but I may take you up on that!! or it looks like converting to digital is pretty easy now too...

I believe the Late Late Show debut appearance was wiped to rerecord over. Hard to believe but likely true. The Boomtown Rats in America was recorded by RTE in 1979 but has never been shown in full since .Might be due to copyright issues. I think it's lurkng in the RTE vaults.

The Rats were on the Late Late Show early 1981 when the video of Elephants Graveyard was shown but I think it was a Geldof only interview.  Bits and pieces I remember slightly..it was a long time ago!

I've always wondered if there is proper footage of the Rats supporting ThinLizzy at Dalymount Park in 1977. I've only seen snippets. There is a 1979 concert from the Netherlands which was recorded for Dutch TV. It's high quality footage but again seems to be locked away in  a vault.

Contemporary radio interviews are always interesting.  Most are Geldof only. Recently I discovered that Straight Up was about an unnamed acquaintance of Bob's which is very interesting and intriguing  This reveal came at the end of an obscure 1981 interview with American Armed Forces Radio, of all people.  It's available on YouTube.

I've got an old short interview with Pete from 1979 Irish Press in which he states that before the Rats took off he was considering a job offer in Tehran!

Not sure if it's 'lost media' but are there demos available for Mondo Bongo, VDeep, In The Long Grass? Unfortunately or not I tend to look back to the glory days when the band could do no wrong. Without Gerry, Johnny and Garry the live appeal has very much faded so much so that I doubt I'll attend any of the 50th Anniversary gigs.

We need to organise a raid on all these archives! I would love to see more of the Dalymount footage too, there's so many snippets in the documentary that must have come from somewhere.

One day they'll decide to open them and we will all be very happy!!

Possibly someone on one of the Lizzy sites might know about more Rats footage from Dalymount? It was sort of a big deal back then.
