Micheál Martin has told musician and campaigner Bob Geldof he was not in a position to nominate him as Fianna Fáils presidential candidate and that he had made a commitment to former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin.

Reports of Geldofs name featuring among a list of potential presidential candidates emerged on Monday.

A number of prominent people at home and abroad are known to have approached Fianna Fáil in relation to the upcoming election

Bob Geldof is considering becoming the latest high-profile figure to join the race to become the next president of Ireland.

The Boomtown Rats frontman said it would be an enormous privilege to serve as the Irish head of state ahead of an election that must be held before Nov 11 and is expected in late October.

I do want something new, stimulating and useful to do, he told the Irish Independent on Monday night

What makes Bob think that the Irish people would vote for a multi millionaire who hasn't lived in the country for almost 50 years? He'd probably  get less than 5% of the votes if that.

They voted for a leprechaun last time, so why not Saint Bob?  I would definitely vote for him.  Not really sure why I cant as I am an Irish citizen.  And Geldof despite being able to stand for president cant vote for the president either.

So was he going to drop the October 50th Anniversary tour to come over to Ireland and spend weeks going around the country canvassing like the other candidates? That's what he would have to do to stand any chance.  Michael D Higgins had a long career in the Irish Labour Party so it's totally ignorant to insult him and the people of Ireland on who they voted for and why. The problem with Geldof is that he is always seeking attention. He's not as prized in Ireland as he thinks he is and lots of under 35s probably know little about him. The Rats are way down on the list of most popular Irish bands, I mean waaayyyy down.

Geldof didnt make the nominations. Surely no one outside Dublin will vote for Jim Gavin. Brian Lohan might be looking for a job next year

For good or bad he should just stick with the music. I'm not even sure what Geldof's political opinions are. I can see a decent vote for Jim Gavin from all over Ireland from GAA supporters but that depends on what Gavin stands for, which is currently not widely known.

Given the role is mostly ceremonial, I would say political opinions are less important than representing Ireland on the international stage.
