- A traumatologist at a Budapest hospital is under investigation for refusing to provide medical care to a police officer, a national daily said on Monday.
The police lieutenant turned to the doctor who works in Janos Hospital on October 27, complaining about pains in one of his legs.
According to the report drawn by the police officer, the traumatologist, identified as Imre N., attributed his leg pains to what he termed as a lengthy chase of peaceful demonstrators in the streets of Budapest. The doctor said his leg would recover without any intervention, and, citing reasons of conscience, refused to provide medical care for him, said the paper.
In the end another doctor treated put the officer's leg, putting it in splints and plaster.
Police launched an investigation against the physician under suspicion of failing to provide needed medical aid, but has not yet questioned him.
The affair followed violent clashes between police and demonstrators in Budapest on October 23, the 50th anniversary of Hungary's ill-fated revolution.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany claimed the police actions during the riots were lawful, justified, proportionate why the opposition blamed the authorities for unjustified brutality and failure to make a distinction between rioters and members of a peaceful rally commemorating the revolution.
