Years ago, I had a Warwick records budget LP compilation called Modern Rockers, which featured a completely different (musically and lyrically) version of She's So Modern to that on any Rats record I ever had.
Does anyone else remember this one, or - better still - does anyone know how come such a different version was used?

I never heard it, so I can't say. I guess it's possible that the record company provided the wrong master, and that was used. You don't happen to still have it, do you? If so, any chance of a making an mp3 and sending it to ratchat2005@yahoo.co.uk so I can, ahem, investigate it further.....
There are copies on sale in teh www. I'm tempted to buy it, but must resist!

I do have a copy, but it'll need digging out, and after that I'll be able to record from it easily enough. Don't expect fantastic quality, though - it was the last track on one of two groove-crammed sides of vinyl...you know how those compilations used to be!
It might be more productive to ask whether anyone has the special edition Drag me Down 12" single, in case (1) this really is the same alternate version, in which case it ought to sound much better with more vinyl to go at, and (2) we could also find out whether Rat Trap was any different, too.
It was a 12" special edition although Rat Trap was the same She's so Modern was an alternative version if memory serves me right it was faster than the original
I might try and snag one of those, then - at least then we can compare it with the Modern Rockers version.
Perhaps at some point it might be a good idea for us all to pool resources and produce the ultimate "missing-from-the-remasters" collection of odds and ends?

Yes, I remember the echo on groove crammed vinyl. Fall Down was really bad on Mondo Bongo, was glad the re-releases came out so I could finally listen to it properly.
Alas, I don't have the special edition Drag Me Down (just the standard 12"), as I saw no point at the time in buying stuff I already had (or now not as seems to be the case, doh!).
As an aside, there are 2 versions of Rat Trap, one with the lyric "Death & Tears pass down the drains & the sewers" and the other more standard "Pus & Grime ooze thru the scab crusted sores" . The former, I believe was on the original green labelled Ensign singles, and has the scratched note 'No grime here, Paddy' on the end run of the single. Fortunaltely I have both of them.

send me a PM with an email address. RatChat2005 has a number of the tracks that were missing from the remasters. Almost all the b-sides should be there (bar Banana Republic (Live)**/Close As You'll Ever Be (Live)** from Dave 12" because my turntable isn't working.... (and the massive hints I dropped to the missus over Christmas for one with USB cable)

That's the same credits as A Tonic for the Troops, isn't it? But I suppose they could have got the details wrong on that special edition 1984 Drag Me Down 12" single - just used the usual credits, I mean.
Which leaves us with the same question - is it a demo? Or a genuine alternate take from the ATFTT sessions?
Right, I just got myself a copy of that Special Edition Drag Me Down 12 inch, and the version of She's So Modernis the different one (i.e. the same as on Modern Rockers).

Still no bloomin' idea where it's from, mind!
Ok, time to start tracking that down on eBay......
It is also on a "Old Gold" single with Mary of the 4th form on one side and She`s So Modern on the other.I think it is called "old gold".There is also a Mondays/Rat trap single as well.
I'm going to have to listen to it again to check this, but I think that one of the lyrical differences about this version is that the line "She's so 1970s" is omitted.
If so, could this be the reason they re-did it - to stop it going out of date?
Not sure why this came back under discussion but I hadn't seen original thread so not unhappy it did.
I also bought Modern Rockers at time of release and was staggered to find a previously unheard of version of She's So Modern then, truth be told, slightly disappointed when same version did come to light on the Rats' 12 special edition some time later. Was hoping the comp album would be a collectors' item for Rats fans
Either way, I kind of lost the thread here but if anyone does still want the V/A album on vinyl let me know as I still have it. The 12 inch special went with all my Rats vinyl clearout some years back unfortunately.

Ha - my fanaticism didn't quite go as far as sourcing all the Top of the Pops versions, or rather my income at that age didn't. That and the fact they were in general awful renditions from my limited exposure to that series.
Guess we're all in the long grass since last album with no tour etc to discuss, and there can't be too much from the 'old days' not previously covered. Good to see the faithful remain though.
If anyone wants the 'ultra rare' Modern Rockers with alternate SSM version just let me know.

Would cost more to post/collect it than its worth. I am hoping that post COVID lockdown the local charity shops get deluged with vinyl and CD clear outs, but safe to say that Modern Rockers is not on my list. Finding eBay pretty frustrating with my winning bids getting trumped with 2-3 seconds to go.

That's a great piece of nostalgia. DVD did emerge 3 years later, but I guess you were still honing your Mystic ArrGee tendencies! Makes me feel old, like decimilasation was 50 years ago yesterday! I have the faintest of memories of grandparents going on about it and how long it was taking them to get used to it.

The only coins left from decimalisation are the old coppers (1p & 2p). Way off topic, but about 10 years ago son did project for cubs where they had to find coins from every year from 1971. Somehow we managed to get the lot and made a lovely spiral display all the way to 2010. Would be impossible to do nowadays as no one has cash anymore!
mystery as to the whereabouts of about £50bn worth of notes in circulation these are not being used for transactions or identified as savings held by households
Now there is an easy way to pay for Covid. Scrap cash!

Cash will be nostalgia soon. Cubs, now that takes me back to the 70s, Monday night used to clash with Opportunity Knocks. 50p was ten bob. Dad used to feed the meter. You'd get a roll of film developed and petrol was by the gallon. Definitely feeling old now.
Forum is turning into an episode of Last of the Summer Wine
Will be lamenting fact kids look blanks when you say dial the number or pull the chain next.
ArrGee I'll be over at ExCel tomorrow (18th) afternoon if you do fancy a FOC compilation in brown paper bag (sanitised obviously).
Thanks, but I will pass on Modern Rockers. I have the Drag Me Down 12". Assuming you will be at every Rats gig, will see you sometime later this year (hopefully). Dont know what the chance of Stone Valley happening is, but given the audience will be old codgers who will all be vaccinated, it would be 99% safe.
PS - are you getting your CoVid jab at Excel? I got notified yesterday, but there are no appointments. Still as I have already had CoVid earlier this year I dont really need it.
