Despite hitting the top of the charts several times in their native UK, the Boomtown Rats never really caught on in America. Their label, Columbia Records, had hyped them as the next big punk band saying they would be in the same league as the Clash and the Pretenders.

It didn’t happen. This was mostly because they never had the material to win over radio programmers, despite having a hit with “I Don’t Like Mondays.” Also an early promotion by the label involved sending actual dead rats in plastic bags (purchased from the New York City Sewer Department) to DJs across the country. The publicity stunt backfired and caused the media to react with such disgust that many of these radio personalities, programmers and journalists wrote off the band forever.

Led by the charismatic lead vocalist, Bob Geldof, the group certainly had a great showman as their front man on stage. The band, assisted by former Graham Parker reed man, Space Jenner, was certainly comprised of strong musicians. Their two studio albums produced by the future Mr. Shaina Twain, Robert John Mutt Lange (who also produced some of the best records ever made by Foreigner, Huey Lewis, and AC/DC) should have propelled them into stardom, but didn’t.

So, why didn’t they take off? Who knows, but some rock historians feel the material simply wasn’t strong enough to cross over from the UK to American play lists.

Some comments

There is a real gem in the Boomtown Rats San Diego concert that was just added:  Their piano-and- vocal-only rendition of "I Don't Like Mondays," which was inspired by the tragic school shooting that occurred in San Diego just a month before the show.  Here's hoping you can find a Boomtown Rats concert from their subsequent U.S. tour (there was a great one at Santa Monica Civic in 1981 or 82) that includes the finished version of that song along with other songs from their "Fine Art of Surfacing" album. The Rats may not have made it big in the U.S., but those few of us who saw their shows and bought their records knew we were onto something that a lot of other people would regret missing if only they had discovered it.

I was reading the information regarding the Rats on the Concerts page and was surprised at the poor quality of the information. 1. The Boomtown Rats are not a UK band, They come from Ireland, Yes it is a small place, however as most peple know it is not the UK. 2. The problems with the US DJ's did not really have anything to do with their marketing plan or their lack of quality songs, but had more to do with the US DJ's not wanting to play anything that was vaguely controversial.(for more evidence I dont believe that the Pistols were a huge hit either). 3. Rat trap and I dont like mondays are 2 songs that will be around long after many of the US hits from the same era(Air Supply etc)are well and truly consigned to who cares basket?

Can Audacity record RealAudio or other streaming audio?

Windows and Linux

With most Windows and Linux audio devices, it is possible to record whatever sound the computer is currently playing, including internet radio streams.

How can I record in stereo?

How do I save my recording on an audio CD?

After making a recording or editing a file in Audacity, follow these steps to save your work on an audio CD:

  1. Use the “Export as WAV” or “Export as AIFF” command to save your Audacity recording in a sound file.
  2. Use any CD-recording software (iTunes or Nero, for example) to burn this file to a CD.

To make a disc you can play in normal CD players, make sure to create a “music” or “audio” CD (not a “data” CD). Use CD-R discs, because some players cannot read CD-RW.

Some CD software will burn only 16-bit, 44.1KHz stereo sound files. If your CD recording software won't open your sound file, export the file again after choosing the following settings in Audacity:

  1. At the bottom of the Audacity window, set the Project Rate to 44100 Hz.
  2. In the File Formats preferences, choose WAV (16-bit...) or AIFF (16-bit...).
  3. If your project does not already contain a stereo track, choose “New Stereo Track” from the Project menu. (This will make Audacity export your recording as a stereo file.)
How can I split a long recording into multiple files or CD tracks?

Follow these steps to create a separate file for each song or segment of a long recording. This is particularly useful if you are creating a CD, since each file will appear as a separate track on the CD.

  1. Click to place the cursor at the start of the first song.
  2. Choose “Add Label at Selection” from the Project menu. If you wish, you can type the name of the song.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each song.
  4. When you are finished, choose “Export Multiple” from the File menu. When you click the “Export” button, Audacity will save each song as a separate file, using the format and location you choose.
Can I set Audacity to record for a certain time?

You can make Audacity stop recording after a certain time limit, by following these steps:

  1. Turn on “Play existing tracks while recording” in the “Audio I/O” section of the preferences.
  2. Choose “New Audio Track” from the Project menu.
  3. Zoom out if necessary, then click and drag to select the amount of time you want to record.
  4. Start recording. Audacity will stop recording automatically when it reaches the end of the selected area.

Audacity does not come with MP3 support by default. To get support, you must download and install the "Lame Encoder" Plug-In. You can find a copy of the Windows version HERE. seems a bit complicated to me. I actually managed to download the software without any difficulties - but operating it is a different matter! I think I've set it going, but nothing tells me it is - so I don't think anything is actually happening. Oh well...

Hmm well I managed to work out the second lot of software.  That's much easier to use!  Technophobe Jules managed it with no help

Having had a good listen to this concert (and very good it is), I decided to take a look at Geldof's reminsciences of it in Is That It?

I have long suspected that Is That It? wasn't entirely honest (and am not sure if Geldof wrote much of it or even checked it), but the two pages on the gig and Mondays beggar belief.

First is Geldof's claim that before Rat Trap he lays into American Radio, and lets the crowd  know where the excutives are and they give them grief before the excutives walk out.  This is not what happened.  Geldof merely says there ain't much worth listening to on the radio bar the oasis of sound that is the Boomtown Rats.

Secondly, he claims he said wants to be rich & famous so he can buy Rolling Stone so he can burn it down.  Again this isn't what happened.  The only reference to Rolling Stone is their article on Will America Do The Rat.

And Thirdly, on stage Geldof says he wrote Mondays after reading a newspaper report in the UK a month before.  Yet in Is That It? and in the Loudmouth sleevenotes he claims to have written it FOUR months before this gig when he saw the report come through on the telex during an interview in Atlanta!  So that would have been around October 1978 when the Rats were touring the UK promoting Rat Trap  (For the record the Brenda Spencer shootings took place on 29 January 1979)

I have actually heard Bob say different things on the radio/TV and at gigs.  So the inconsistencies are probably largely down to him!  I suspect he wrote most of that book.  He also said recently that he can't remember what he wrote in it and knew that he had to include a lot of sex for it to sell.  So we still wouldn't know which is the truth - whether he just wants to play things down now or he exaggerated then.

On the Mondays date, well it is obvious which version is wrong, unless he has psychic powers as well as his other talents .

Paul Vallely wrote it. It just looks like Vallely didn't research it that well nor did Geldof read it.

If I can just jump in here (& sorry I've been away for so long), Paul Vallely did the ghost writing - although "tidying up" would be more accurate - but the actual editing of the book was done by none other than Susan Hill, she of "The Woman In Black" & "I'm The King Of The Castle" infamy...and she edited a LOT of stuff out...not least of all due to the laws of libel, but also a lot of stuff about his dad, because Susan Hill said he would regret it later if it was printed...which makes the mind boggle as to what was left out considering the pasting he gave his old man.

There were bits also added in that were total fiction because they made for a better story. For instance the Boomtown Rats, Queen & Sex Pistols NEVER shared a recording studio together - although it was true that Sid did ask Freddie cheekily if he was trying to bring ballet to the masses (a reference to Freddie's leotard costume at the time during the "Jazz" era of Queen). Also the actor asking about his "motivation" during The Wall is a story first told by Peter Ustinov regarding a London play he was directing.

This was - and remains - a problem of many celeb biographies, editors being economical with the truth for the sake of entertainment. The result is that it makes it hard to separate fact from fiction. Screaming Lord Sutch's autobiog is one of the worst examples: so stuffed full of garbage c/o editor Peter Chippendale that the real funny stories (the Shirley Williams incident & the cuckold concrete path layer of Darlington) appear as just inventions.

I think there's a certain amount of what could be called 'artistic license' involved in what BG sometimes says.

BUT, Bob is as much a product as a McBurger and so has to sell himself. To be fair he had to make a living from being a celebrity and so has to sometimes make things more interesting than perhaps they actually are/were. He's probably as much stuck in a Rat Trap as anybody else!

Not forgetting that sometimes it's not that easy to remember things from the past. A few years ago, I walked into a pub and this girl came up to me and asked how I was doing. I couldn't remember her at all, but she clearly knew my name and all about me.

I had to apologize and tell her I had not got a clue who she was, only for her to say I had got off with her at a party years ago and she wished that she had gone out with me when I had asked her out.

Really weird, because I couldn't remember her clearly - around that time I'd spent years living a rock n roll lifestyle and it was just a blur of girls and drink.


Must be a million times worse for BG to remember dates etc.
