"Her name was actually Mary Preece. We used to hang out in a coffee bar and record shop in Dun Laoghaire called Murray's. After school, she'd come down and she'd have rolled up her skirt and she had legs for days. She was drop dead beautiful and I just wanted her so much and knew that I'd never be able to get her. Actually, I did "get off with her" - to use the parlance of the day - at the Killiney Tennis Club Dance. It was deeply passionate in a grabby, feely way. Anyway, Mary subsequently became the personal assistant to the Irish Prime Minister and lives beside my father, bizarrely enough. She's got two or three kids. But God, she was a major babe." - Geldof
Did he get off with her? Methinks not!
"Yeah, she became the PR to the Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern. Us Dun Laoghaire kids go far! We played in Vicar Street in Dublin a couple of years ago, and there she was: still gorgeous and still wouldn't shag me. She's married, but I didn't feel that should be an impediment. I mean, I'm an international rock star, for ****'s sake!" - Geldof
Poor Mary, no matter what she does she'll always be known as a teenage temptress...
And yet another Mary was living it up last week, namely Mary Preece, a senior civil servant in the Department of the Taoiseach. Magnificent Mary did the opening honours at the special retirement bash in Dublin Castle last Friday for Walter Kirwan - deputy secretary of the Department of the Taoiseach for the last 30 years. Six hundred people turned up to wish Walter well, among them Bertie, Garret, John Hume and the aforementioned sex-bomb Mary. For those of you too old to remember, Mary was, of course, the inspiration behind Bob Geldof's famous Mary of the Fourth Form hit for the Boomtown Rats in 1977 - Irish Independent - Sunday July 18th 2004
I've heard him say at gigs that he didn't 'get off' with her - and he kept trying offering to try it for size etc. I think he didn't and sometimes might just say he did for effect.
yeah i think i remember him saying at the concert i went to, that when he came back all rich and famous, she still wouldn't have him. xD i might be wrong =[ not sure... ooh yeah it says in argee's quote!
Cazzy you heard exactly what I heard and what ArrGee has quoted. He said he begged her and begged her and she still wouldn't! I think that is probably the truth don't you?
In the Independent interview, he says it was when she was 42. So this quote is from a long time ago. Anyway, who the hell cares? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hReph6bK_s
The other thing about the things he has said about this is his age. We worked out from what he was saying that she'd have been 9 years old. He was trying to say they were the same age but took some years off his age - which effectively made her 9 at the time. I think not! I remember turning to the people next to me who were looking rather confused - we all agreed it was strange. I think he might be a little sensitive about his age, although these days he does actually say his true age.

I do, why the hell answer if you don't?
When I don't care, I don't answer (see petitions, scrapbook, geldof appreciation society). Recently when I post, you respond as if I'm one of your schoolkids who dares to say anything out of line.
Take the Hay festival. They put the message up saying there were lots of free tickets left for students (and only for that event), I report it; so you have to come up with a put down.
Now this. Why would I post if I didn't care? I am interested. I'd like to find out. Why discuss Rats songs on a Boomtown Rats forum at all? Obviously it's a waste of time. No one cares.

yup i'm fairly confident it's true hehe. poor bob. i find it quite amusing though (sorry bob!)
Yes, men like to brag! Sir Bob always states he got shagged a lot, probably poor Mary was one of the "shagees"?! Poor thing...
I thought it funny that The Police had a couch they called the shag couch at one of their apartments in London! Only a guy would be crazy enough to name a couch like that.
What about some of these other women who have come forth to say they shagged Bob? He appears to either deny or state he doesn't recall...oh brother, that is just rude!
What a little weasel he can be, eh, not to mention, not at all a gentlemen with his kiss-N-tell verbage.
We love you Sir Bob. We hope you practiced safe sex! WHOA!
