I got back yesterday from a weekend at Butlins, Skegness and I'd highly recommend it!
It was great fun and lots of good music. We stayed in a Silver Self Catering apartment. I had been dreading the accommodation - having visions of basic unclean rooms. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Everything has just been refurbished and we were the first people to stay in the accommodation. It was clean and nicely equipped.
There were some great 70s tribute bands and then there was Slade. Slade was the highlight of the weekend. They still have 2 of the original members - Dave Hill being one of them. You can really see the difference between the professionals and the amateurs. He just appeared so 'big' on stage. His stage prescence was huge and the energy was incredible. He knew how to get the audience going and get involved, just as professional stars do.
We saw tributes to David Bowie, Mud, T-Rextasy (apparently there were some original members amongst them but I didn't recognise anyone), Blondie and others. We had to miss Mott the Hoople (Tribute) and Sweet (tribute) because they clashed with others. The sets were around 45 minutes long, so it wasn't practical to see half a set and then wander off to another.
It could be a good place for Bob to play, he could do the Boomtown Rats II with 2 original members! Not sure if that would go down to well, but he'd get a big audience, guaranteed. What do you think?
Off to see 10cc and Kiki Dee tomorrow in Oxford...
