Self Aid video 1986 - the Rats last performance

Came accross this video of the finale of Self Aid, Dublin, 1986, with I think the Rats' last performance. Bob is in there, a young Bono, Chris De burgh among others. Quite good quality

No prizes, but who can name the most stars, past and present?

Phew...that video brought it all back. Everyone looks sooo... young!!!.
Ehh...I was at the gig. I can't name all the faces but, at a glance, theres paul brady, mary black, chris de burger, paddy whatsit oh yeah Maloney....the chieftains, the frames? the radiators? the pogues played but were they on for that number (don't think so), anyway the most memorable bit (besides the RATS SET) was going home....As I left the gig all the flagons of cider, lager etc..(which had been confiscated as we entered the gig) were stacked behind the gates as we left!!! So no one (security staff) seemed to take any notice. We decided to tuck in to whatever we could carry. Well there we were walking down the road with four flagons each!!! By the way one flagon is nearly four pints. Everything was going great until we decided to open one...only one. Well we were thirsty, thirstier than we thought after all that rockin'.....so that one was gone....we opened another....next thing we stopped off for a rest (it was still another five miles home) so we walked some more, still nursing the flagons.......and ended up throwing all our treasure over someones hedge...we got home with the dawn chorus as a finale to the nights rockin'!!! (suppose you live and learn)... anyway I was in a spin for another reason, as Bob had said '10 years RIP' hmm at the end of the Rats set. Thankfully the solo albums have been history..........I still have some photos of the Bob fella struting his stuff at the gig...maybe i'll dig them out and post them up on this thread.
Just thinking, how did I manage to carry the camera and the beer...lucky I threw away the beer.........

all the best

Hi Nick, I like that story! biggrinbiggrin
Please do post the photos if you still have them.

Every time I read your user name I think of the shortest (and loudest!) concert I've ever been to - The Jesus and Mary Chain in The Top Hat in Dun Loaghaire in ca. 1990. I think they played for about 20 minutes! Does the venue still exist?
I've also been to some of the places you mention in the "BG Dublin tour" thread. I enjoyed your photos! "Celtic Rat", lol!

Hi Katharina,
Thanks for your kind words.
You've cracked my 'TopHat' username in one wink.... I thought no one would ever get it. Its a couple of hundred metres down from where Bob grew up (seapoint avenue). I used to go to the Top Hat to see bands when I was a teenager. I also went to school in Dunlaoghaire and we used the Top Hat as a gymnasium for doing our PE class. We spent most of the PE class trying to break into the bar when the teacher wasn't looking! I think its apartments now weirdface, thats the Celtic Tiger for you. I'll take a photo for you and put it into the great 'BG Dublin Tour' thread.
Anyway, heres some photos of SelfAid which survived that drunken night.
all the best
nick
