absolutely fantastic nite, by the time he started the second track i just had to get up and dance, the crowd at hay is a strange mix so me and chris were out there alone for quite some time, but who was having the better time

By the end of the gig the front of the stage was packed, the atmosphere electric, Bob and the boys were obviouly enjoying themselves.

Sorry we have no pic's this time as we were to busy dancing, Bob did have a new suit, in his words "do you like my new suit, i call it my colmans suit" as you can guess it was mustard yellow. (he looked very handsome).

He also joked that he was at Hay because he sold more books now than records.

it always pays to hang around and after eveyone else had drifted away i sweet talked the sercurity guy and although Bob didnt come out I did have a photo signed. (to kaz love Bob)

He said that he was off to Germany for the G9 today and he also mentioned he had some new songs, but wasn't playing them tonite as he hadn't yet shared them with the rest of the band.

That said, He manages to defy science and become just 'fowl' (actually a vulture) at Christmas time....for obvious reasons.

By the way, I liked the interview, especially where it went to suggestions of Irish rugby sweating in front of the posts for five minutes wondering what to do. For rugby, I hope those days are gone. I thought vivienne got raw deal? in expanding her points? what do you think.

Viewers of Sky Arts may be interested to know that the channel's interview with Bob Geldof from the Hay Literary Festival had to be edited, and edited, and edited, and then edited a little more, to remove the dishevelled Mother Teresa's customary buttering of profanities.

Asked by his interviewer Mariella Frostrup to stop "focking", Geldof said: "Yeah but it's Sky, no one watches it anyway." Muttering production staff subsequently scurried about reworking the material; one gofer was overheard phoning a colleague just before transmission: "We've missed another one!"

Geldof played an Irish folk gig at the festival, "acting as though he were some sort of rock god, putting his hands up in the air," according to my woman waving her cigarette lighter from side to side at the back. He wore a bright, Colman's-yellow suit. "The zipper is broken on the trouser bit but it's nothing to do with my physicality," he told the palpitating fans. "And sorry to the 80-year-olds at the front as I will be taking off the jacket later."

Yeah, sounds like Bob.

New suit, same old songs

Last weekend I travelled from Holland to Hay-on-Wye with a friend, to visit the Festival, the bookshops and of course, the gig that Bob would be playing. We attended a few literary events and a performance by an Irish comedian, Jason Byrne. We had never heard of him, but he was hilarious!
We spent Tuesday looking forward to Bob's show, that evening. When we arrived at the venue at 7.30, we had to endure the British queueing tradition and we agreed it is completely pointless. There were two doors and therefore two seperate queues; we were number 3 and 4 in the left queue.The doors wouldn't open until 8.30, so we had plenty of time to analyse the queueing system. Our conclusion: half of the people are embarassed because they have to leave the queue to visit the WC or buy drinks, and then return to their rightful place; the other half are annoyed by the alleged squeezing and pushing of the former half. When the doors finally open, you have to push forward and run, to secure the good seat that you were queueing for in the first place.
Next to me was a British lady and she wondered how on earth we were able to organize a decent concert "on the continent" without proper queueing. I explained: they just open the doors an hour and a half before the gig, everybody just walks in at their own time, finds a seat that suits them and waits patiently until the gig starts. It really works!

All this queueing landed us in the middle of row number 4. The front rows had been taken by the "friends" and sponsors of the festival, but we still had a pretty good view on the stage. The event was sold out, which meant that there was a crowd of 1200 people, aged from 8 to 80.

A little past 8.45, Bob appeared on stage and launched into the first set of songs. He commented on his new suit ("my Colman suit") and that it had a little problem with the zipper (we didn't witness any failures during the gig though). He also mentioned that he had written some new songs, but he couldn't play them because the band didn't know them and he didn't want to do "a twenty-minute solo gig" (I wouldn't have minded!). As Bob summed it up, "new suit, same old songs". But the old songs are great, and the gig was fantastic!
After a couple of songs, a few people got up from their seats to dance; towards the end of the show, the space between the seats and the stage was packed and almost everybody else stood up from their seats, clapping and dancing.

Halfway the set, Bob started quite a long speech about Africa and the upcoming G8 summit in Germany. Everybody listened breathlessly and there was a heart-felt applause at the end. I noticed how the other band members listened very attentively; they must have heard it a million times, but they all waited quietly until Bob was ready to play the song that needed this long introduction, Scream in vain.

The gig ended around 11 pm. A few people, including myself, hung around hoping for a picture or an autograph. But we were rather rudely sent away by some over-zealous security guard: "He's not signing anything tonight! Leave the venue now or you'll be locked in!" So we had no choice but to leave. That was a bit disappointing, but of course it couldn't ruin a great evening!

We returned to Holland on Thursday, looking back on a wet and cold, but otherwise wonderful trip to Wales.

But I love your review, Joke! The queueing... It's something we'll never understand, lol!

Hi Jules--How are you two--Liz and myself went to hay.As said in other messages--What a gig--best for years.Also managed to get in for the Hay on sky recording.So we had a great day.Only problem was we couldn't get a room anywhere so ended up in a pre erected tent--bloody freezing--lol--thinking of going to Switzerland in July for the gig--cheers Ian
