Bob Geldof is reminiscing about his childhood, and a day which changed his life forever. "I remember standing out on our doorstep with the radio turned up very loud and looking up in the sky with my dad. Seeing a beep beep thing going by. It is extraordinary what has happened since beep beep. I have lived my life through various programmes since then - since Sputnik."


When the Soviet Union successfully launched the world's first artificial satellite on October 4, 1957, a new era had begun. It marked the start of the space age, and a whole wave of political, technological, and scientific developments.

"I thought it was romantic then," he recalls. "I was a small boy. I did not have stuff like that. Here was the transistor age."

Ten Alps, the media business he co-founded, has just issued a set of strong full-year results and he has plenty to say - even if half the words are expletives.

The shares last week struck an all-time high of 68.5p, having listed on Aim at 23p through a reverse takeover in July 2001
