Geldof just has this knee jerk reaction to all forms of criticism. I understand that he wants to protect his children, but there has been a book or two on the subject and given the whole story was played out in the press, a documentary/dramatisation wouldn't be too surprising. Is he scared he will be shown in a bad light? He doth protest too much.
Geldof's fury over BBC plans to film Paula's final days
Bob Geldof, the father of three children by Paula Yates, has appealed to the BBC to abandon plans to make a drama about his late wife's discovery, in the final months of her life, that she was the illegitimate child of the Opportunity Knocks presenter Hughie Green.
"As a maker of television programmes himself, Bob sees this for what it is - an entirely spurious excuse to dredge up a lot of sensational old headlines and, in the process, some intensely painful memories for him and his family," says a close friend of the singer and songwriter who now presides over the Ten Alps media company.
"He has made the point to the producers that Paula only found out that Green was her natural father after he had died and that the wretched man played no part in her life at all.
"If it is true, as he understands, that the programme will show them together then that will have no basis in truth. He'd expect this of Channel 4 or Channel 5, but he is amazed that the corporation is prepared to stoop so low."
Mandrake understands that Geldof's emotional appeal has not persuaded the programme makers to abandon the project.Provisionally entitled Sincerely Yours - Green's catchphrase was "I mean that most sincerely, folks" - the one-hour special is being written by Tony Basgallop.
A corporation insider tells me it will be "a no-holds-barred" examination of Green's private life and the illicit union that the family entertainer, who died in 1997, had with the former showgirl Helene Thornton, which resulted in Miss Yates's birth.
Miss Thornton had always led her daughter to believe that her father was the former Stars on Sunday presenter Jess Yates, but the truth was established by a paternity test after media allegations in 2000. Shortly afterwards, Miss Yates was found dead, at the age of 41, as a result of an accidental heroin overdose.
Geldof, who was awarded an honourary knighthood in 1986 for being the driving force behind the Live Aid concerts, declined to comment yesterday. "If I say anything on the record, I will simply be giving these people publicity for their grubby little programme," he told me during a visit to Ireland.
Well, being controlling was a complaint Ms. Yates whined about regarding Bob. Not really surprised.
I wonder what was said during that phone conversation between Bob and M. Hutchence, the day M. Hutchence hanged himself. Bob's lips are tight on that subject.
The whole story is really sad. I truly believe from what I have read that Paula just got "lost" and there was no one there to support or help her. She shut herself off from most of her friends. Bob was already off with "Frenchie" J. Marine, however, he plays this down. I also think he was so hurt that he left Paula out to hang.
I'm kind of with both. Yes, I do think Bob is a control freak and his reaction might be stronger because of that. However, I think there is genuine concern about the whole thing. He wants some dignity for his late ex-wife and also to protect his children. TV is more in your face than books.

I think he has every right to protect his children from the lies, but he seems to want to supress the whole story, which gives the impression he has something to hide. I don't care too much for this type of program (How many Diana programmes have there been in this style?), and wouldn't watch it, but the programme makers have the right to tell the story.
