http://www.library.ubc.ca/archives/pdfs/ubyssey/UBYSSEY_1979_03_16.pdfA bit mangled but You can get the driftBoomtown Rats bring Geldof back to Vancouver with bangROSS BURNETT

The latest group to take the Commodore

was the Boomtown Rats

from Ireland. Last Friday they

played their first North American

date here and it was fantastic.

I may never visit the Pacific Coliseum

again. Ill certainly not pay to

see the Canucks for a while and

with concerts like those that have

been happening at the Commodore

lately, who needs the hassles of a

Coliseum concert?

The Boomtown Rats do not play

rock. Their sound is clear and their

lyrics intelligent although not

political.

Geldof has got all the moves of a

big rock star. He jumps and flys

across the stage while taunting the

audience with his fist and

microphone. Hell stand back, staring

at the floor, his hand flapping

about as if it were loose and then

pounce forward leaning out over

the crowd as he sings.

By the end of the song the audience

was dancing and singing

right along with him. The group

proceeded to do most of the songs

from their two albums letting down

no one.

Between numbers Geldof chatted

with the crowd making sure

everyone realized he was returning

to Vancouver, having worked here

Chuck Berry but guitarists Gary

Cott and Gerry Roberts play it cool,

content to dazzle the crowd with

their performance. On keyboards

Johnnie Fingers appears ghoulish

due to stage lighting from below.

The backbone of each song is provided

by Simon Crowe on drums.

The energy these guys produced

Friday didnt let up and it was

transferred to the crowd as the concert

ended. Chants of Boomtown

Rats, Boomtown Rats went on until

the group returned to do Mary of

The Fourth Form. This was not

enought though as the crowd

demanded them back for still

another song.
Its the fault of irresponsible

management that although the Rats

are good, they arent played on

radio. Just bear in mind that with a

name like Boomtown Rats you

know theyve got to play good

music.
