And has upset the locals according this. He's been invited to a college to challenge his views. Bob please insult something in Oxford and we can invite you here too. I could live with that.
Hi, 'Ugly' taken in context is subjective! Therefore the people of Margate have taken umbrage because they value his opinion.
Has anyone experience of this place. More importantly, whats the local brew like?
Maybe Bob could raise the stakes by challenging them that if they lose, all the sellafield (thorpe) 'reprocessing' will be relocated there! But maybe he'd lose on purpose - its too close to home.
The debate should be interesting.

One newspaper actually conducted a poll of plastic surgeons and architects to see who was the ugliest, Bob or Margate. HONESTLY! I am pleased to say that Bob won. All he needs is a nip and tuck apparently.
You asked if anyone had experience of margate. Well it was about 35 years ago, I have memories of a quaint little typical English seaside town, buckets and spades and brown plastic snakes.
St. Patrick drove them out, actually, do you know how he did it, he turned around to the snakes, as he drove them out, in his volkswagon beetle and said - "are yis all right in the back lads"!
all the best nick

I don't if anyone around my age remembers them. They were plastic in different colours, I chose brown for some reason. It wasn't a solid thing but pieces linked together so when you held it it moved!! They were popular toys in around 1970

Hell, that wasn't Margate! This is!
It has a great beach, but it's a pretty brash sort of place, probably the Blackpool of the south, with Roller Coaster, arcades et al. Used to go down there in my teens trying unsuccessfully to get off with girls. Haven't been there for years, but I guess like many seaside towns it has gone to the dogs.
As for Geldof's comments, well they are true. Kent is a lovely place with pockets of squalor.
2. Having a song extolling its virtues by Chas 'N' Dave, the guys who were a retro act before retro had even been invented!
'Nuff said!
Margate, like most UK seaside resorts & the entire of the Isle of Man, is in a timewarp. Now some folk like me might like that, others however find it jarring. And there is nothing more melancholy in the whole world, not even a graveyard, than a seaside town in the winter.
Geldof slagged off Ayr and Dun Laoghaire in similar fashion. They took it on the chin. The fact Margate then tried to milk it for their own aggrandisement says the pathetic truth about what that place has become.

Yep, having Chas 'n' Dave associated just proves it's sh!t! Think Tottenham, think snooker. Pair of C0ckney tw@ts!

First, I don't know the Ayr slag?.... fill me in.
I went to school in Dunlaoghaire 1980, and we called the place Dundreary. It was a seriously dreary place then. However today, Dunlaoghaire is a very different place. Its had a makeover - and its more like Dun-nearly! Bobs dad still lives there today. I'm absolutely sure Bob's aware of the changes there. I would say Bray (wicklow) is kinda more like Marsgate...maybe... there could be a debate, plaque etc. I Like Bray, do you people know Bray, however? Yawn
Maybe, as the pictures of Margate are unfolding, think I'd like the place (for a day trip?).

When Geldof played at the Ayr Gaiety a few years back (he played my request "Never In A Million Years" - after getting over the shock that someone remembered it....Jaysus Bob, it was in the Top 10 Rats songs poll for the greatest hits compo, you old tw@t!), he mentioned growing up in Dun Laoghaire, and saying it was like Ayr, a typical dull retarded seaside town, and most of the audience laughed (back then, no one in Ayr was kidding themselves any longer that the town was in a state of real crises).
Poor old Dunleary's problem was that it was the "Orange flight" town post-independence for those that found the thought of Northern Ireland under Carson too much to stomach, and this became Ireland's equivalent of the likes of Brighton, Bispham (part of Blackpool) & Sidmouth, full of retired Empire Loyalist & Colonel Blimp types moaning about the decline of civilisation, etc. and determined to turn their neck of the woods into a complete timewarp, so that strangers would be burned at the stake if caught in possession of anything digital.
Funny thing is, I kinda like that. Ayr's "Seafield" area, from Wellington Square & the Carleton Cafe, right down to the infamous Wellington School is one bloody big time warp back to 1930. So is much of the Isle of Man. And there's something relaxing about that kind of bygone era thing.
But Margate? Two to one they're either turn into a sleezy gambling area like Blackpool, turn Gay like Brighton, or turn Grey like Sidmouth ("Anyone Under 50 Will Be Birched!")

Thanks for that piece of trivia Mark, I thought I had missed some cryptic song lyrics. Dunlaoghaire does suffer a few 'Colonel Blimp types' but the hardcores are all hiding a few miles down the coast in Greystones, Delgany and the Burnaby.
Dunlaoghaire was renamed 'Kingstown' in 1821 as King George paid a visit. Later to revert back to Dunlaoghaire in 1921. I thing there is still a monument to the 'visit' there. How it survived I don't know.
And Hipcio, I bet you were cold getting that pic. I hope you enjoyed your visit.
