Favorite solo Geldof songs?

My fav's are, 10:15, My birthday suit, Scream in vain, One for me, Pale white girls, Crazy and The great song of indifference. ( But really there is'nt a song i don't like as of yet.)

It's not that I find the solo stuff that bad, it's just that I tend to never come back to it.

I was not impressed with Deep in the Heart of Nowhere (though as my first CD it got played a lot), I did like Vegetarians but never listen to it anymore, Happy Club probably got a once over, and I'm not sure if I have listened to SA&D all the way through yet.

lol that's ok ArrGee...I kinda get where you're coming from, I think. Geldof has his own styles of music, pretty different from the Rats stuff. From the Loudmouth CD (my first Rats/Geldof-related audio purchase), I definitely liked the Rats songs better than Rats-less Geldof. I did like a couple (mentioned already), but the rest were just average. The Vegetarians of Love I think would be great dinner or background music, in my opinion, and only a couple stood out for me.

I have not listened to 'The Happy Club' yet, I wish to soon, though. Sex Age and Death is my favorite of his so far, because it peels away from the accordian-fiddle-upbeat-jiggy style that I don't particularly care for, and there is an interesting variety of stuff here.

Though I would say overall I like the Rats stuff better, I always enjoy hearing Geldof's voice nonetheless, and obviously his solo work is one way to hear it!

I knew I'd find it! My favorite is Emergent Nationalist, and if only I could have remembered the damned title, I'd have requested it when BG was touring with Jamie. Wonder if THEY'D have remembered it, though.

Happy Club (the track) was on repeat in the player the day I graduated from law school.

S/A/D is in a category all by itself.

I'll restrain myself from listing more, because there's lots more.

I don't mind your long windedness at all!

I do like a lot of 80s stuff, and I think I do like that overall 'sound structure' you're talking about...so maybe I should check it out. get a cheap copy from eBay, that's where I'm getting all my solo Geldof stuff (not including SA&D...that was available on amazon!).

But, I didn't like "This is the World Calling" (no offense to those who like it!), I was not impressed with those women background vocals. I don't dig that lol. That song was, IMO, kinda cheesy and almost 'We Are the World' sounding. Not awful but not great. Would you say, fran, that the rest of the album sound falls into that song's same musical category (ie, it's a good representation of the whole album)?

Thanks, I guess - but I'm not a pro at all. It's weird, I don't think I have the vocabulary to even begin to describe what I'm trying to say when I try and talk about music. For all I know, I may have completely botched what I was trying to communicate.

I wake up every morning hoping to be Aretha Franklin, but it hasn't actually happened yet. I haven't played an instrument since I was about 9 years old (smacked the violin against the wall by accident and snapped off the neck - my family wouldn't believe it was unintentional, because I'd been bitching about my 9am Saturday morning lessons); and I do most of my singing in the shower.

There was only one time I walked into a studio, to record a single measly line in a song (a la Band Aid)...I was standing there, staring down the microphone and the stocking thing - I thought I was going to throw up on the spot. Thank God, I managed to do it on key in one take.

I'd like to learn how to play piano before I die.

I almost married a musician, but I don't think that has much to do with it. I guess I just like to listen.

I'm a visual artist. I know how to talk about RGB and CMYK, shadow, highlight and contrast... stuff like that. I do have a pretty big record collection, though.

no you don't have to. I thought maybe if you had a first-impression thought of 'this is the world calling' being like the rest of the album, you could share, but if that means you gotta subject your ears to such horrors...perhaps not worth it

singing in the shower is always good. that and bursting out in song alone in your car, with some great tunes...

Hmmmm....my favorite is Emergent Nationalist. Probably no need to add it to the list, because I think everyone else hates it. I know it's Katharina's most hated of all.

(Still wonder what Jamie did to merit co-writing credit.)

It's a cover of The Kinks' song. It's not bad. Here.

ETA: From what I could find, it was written by Ray Davies in 1966. I don't know if he recorded it though. I knew only of The Kinks' version before Bob sang it.

Thanks, MJ. I agree, it isn't bad. It's not that radical a departure from the Kinks' version though, so I sorta think "why bother?", but it's not bad.

Those of you who say you have not listened much to some albums, i can only say to you that you are missing something.

Here are some of my suggestions for peopl who may not know much about Bob's solo music

I have been a fan of Geldof since very early times and i actually like the solo stuff as the Rats.

Rose at night is brilliant...why is it not mentioned? the vegetarians of love album has some great tracks on it and has a brilliant feel to the whole album, i can play it at any time and still love it....No small wonder, gospel song, voyager 2 type things,crucified me, walking back to happiness are great tracks as well as the more popular great song of indifference and chains of pain....indigenous and addictive sound on the whole album. If you haven't heard it much or ever, get a copy and listen to it a few times, when it grows on you, you will be glad you did.

Beat of the night...Excellent, as are may songs from deep in the heart of nowhere

Emergant nationalist, room 19, attitude chicken, hippy angel.....go and listen to that album again! (happy club) but for me i loved whole to fill, energy, feeling and typical Geldof..Brilliant!

Sex age and death is probably the most popular album, some brilliant songs, i love mudslide, inside your head, 10.15, pale white girls......all of it...i like most of what Geldof does:) it grows on you if you listen to it with an open mind, give it a try and if you get the chance to see Bob in concert, i know you will love it. Gone are the days of massive crowds in big halls like the Rats had, but Bob on his own in smaller halls is one of the best experiences you will ever have!
