It's nice to see the reviews are beginning to appear in the music press. Q have reviewed the albums quite positively. Interestingly though, they rate Mondo Bongo and V Deep very highly, in fact as many stars as Tonic (I also hold this view which not a popular view among general fans, I much prefer Mondo to Tonic and Surfacing and Mood Mambo makes my top 5, although many think it was Geldof's self indulgance). The track that Q most recommend we download is Never In A Million Years.
Isn't it strange that when that track was released originally, it was absolutely slated. How things change.
If you go to the Rats Albums 2005 section of the website, you will see that David Clancy has now taken us up to and including Fine Art of Surfacing with his reviews of the back catalogue.
I almost missed the review of the Rats albums, suppressed as it was by four page of R.E.M. reissues! A couple of nice paragraphs, but no more space than allocated to an individual re-release. If Gerry Cott and Johnnie Fingers read it, they'll know why they didn't get an Outstanding Contribution award
Many years ago I did subscribe to Q, but any magazine whose front page declares
LED
ZEPPELIN
The Most Important Band
In The World... Today!
must be a comic!
Their ratings (for those who can't get it) were
The Boomtown Rats **
Tonic ***
Surfacing **** (Q recommends)
Mondo **** (Q recommends)
V Deep **** (Q recommends)
Long Grass ***
Best Of ***
My copy of NME will land on my doormat tomorrow. Expect the obligatory 1/10 rating (though they did give the Best of a 6 last year!)
I agree mood mambo was great! went to see the rats at birmingham odeon and they opened the gig with it. bob was dressed in black with his big french berry on how cool!! yet he would not play it at newtown last year he said it was crap! wot does he know hey!!
Mood Mambo has a great first minute. Only when Geldof gets in the mood to mambo and everyone goes Bongo Crazy do you start to have some doubts about it. If it had concluded before the ballroom dancing bit it may still have been OK.
Far from crap though, the Rats (and himself) did far worse!
I still reckon Geldof should do Kicks live Would be worth it for the comedy value of a 50 year old singing about being 16. And, of course, the funniest song to listen to now is She's So Modern! Twentienth Century and ninety seventies just ain't!
Would be nice to redo the lyrics on songs as years went by.
Yeah, I found it interesting that "Never In A Million Years" was Q's "essential download" choice. It is a great song...very melodic, and I love the minor chords that are used. Nice to know that a published magazine agrees

Don't Believe What You Read!
I don't think Never In A Million Years epitomises the band, nor is it their best work.
If I had to choose one track it would be He Watches It All. Don't ask me why, but I think it would give a contrast to the popular conception of the band. In second would be Fall Down for very similar reasons.

Yeah, and when the Toy Dolls covered it last year, they still had it as 20th Century...the only lyric that was changed was "lowdown in her files" became "lowdown in her flies" because Olga got an incorrect copy of the lyric from the internet!
