Geldof doesn't mug it up for the cameras - why should Charles?

When I was based in southern Africa for this newspaper in the 1980s, I covered my share of trips by members of the Royal Family and other British dignitaries. These trips tended to follow a pattern. We in the press pack would spend a long day out with a member of the Cabinet or the Royal Family. Most of any given day's schedule would be devoted to worthy matters such as bilateral inward investment or an innovative environmental project in, say, the Zambezi valley.

......

What they say about him privately simply does not accord with the image of the slightly ridiculous, stuffy man we have seen in action this week, seeming ill at ease and with the air of a traveller who would much rather be at home.

Royal aides always complain that, without the set-piece photo opportunities, the media would lose interest. That may be so, but the present arrangement is surely worse. One of the few VIP travellers to Africa who does not mug it up for the cameras is Bob Geldof. I covered a trip of his to Ethiopia a couple of years ago. When urged to perform a tribal dance routine for the cameras, he would refuse, explaining: "I don't do Prince Charles moments", or words to that effect. And no one ever accused him of failing to get his picture in the paper.

And I thought you meant Charlie Watts....or the Vietcong.

(As in "Charlie don't surf!" ... one of my favorite lines in Apocalypse Now, my favorite movie.)
