BBC1 controller signs off with an African odyssey


The departing controller of BBC1 yesterday issued a trenchant defence of her time in charge of the channel and rejected claims that it had been "dumbed down".


Lorraine Heggessey, who spent almost five years in the job, said her priority had been to "build audience confidence" in BBC1 as the platform from which it could then embark on more ambitious programmes.


Her comments came as she signed off her final season launch by announcing plans to dedicate an entire week in the summer schedule to programmes about Africa, including an in-depth documentary series presented by Sir Bob Geldof and a Richard Curtis romantic comedy about Third World debt.

Other highlights include a documentary following Geldof as he travels across sub-Saharan Africa, and the first feature-length comedy for BBC1 by the screenwriter Richard Curtis, whose credits include Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funera
