Geldof's best work since the early Rats, how can you call it his worse album have you not heard that over produced  80's tripe "Deep in the Heart of No where"?

The vegetarians of love restored my faith in Bob's musical ability.

Regards

The Septic one

I have to disagree...'The Happy Club' is probably my least favorite album of his (keep in mind the fact that I have not heard 'Deep in the heart of nowhere' yet....). there are some good songs on HC but the ones I don't like, I really don't like, whereas all of VOL's songs are tolerable in my opinion.

I think the songs 'Love or Something,' 'Thinking Voyager 2 type things,' 'Big Romantic Stuff,' and 'The Chains of Pain' are pretty good

But both VOL and HC pale in comparison to SA&D. That one's definitely my favorite.

Ah, imitation, the sincerest form of flattery!

The Great Song of Indifference was good.  And Deep In The Heart of Nowhere was far worse.  And there is something in buying any old tripe he comes out with, but it's not love, it's something else .

What does what represent?  Are you asking the real ArrGee?

ArrGee is open to numerous interpretations!

Coincidentally it is R.G as in Robert Geldof, but originally it comes from the spanish Real (Royal) like Real Madrid, and Gooner (as is Gunner), so Royal Gunner if you like!!!  And that relates to the football team I support who once upon a time were known as Royal Arsenal.  It originally started as a wind up to some rival supporters, but has stuck with me, and it's what people call me.

So ArrGee is my "real" name!

What is MMbullybuddyGP?

very interesting! creative, too.

as for me:

MM = Marilyn Manson (favorite band)

bullybuddy = I love 'bully breeds' of dogs, especially pit bulls. My mom owns an english bull terrier at home (named Popcorn) and she's such a clever dog. terriers aren't the most obedient of dog breeds but I like those 'bull' dogs anyway (american stafforshire terriers, staffordshire bull terriers). I want to stand up for the pit bull b/c it gets such a bad rap which it really doesn't deserve.

GP = guinea pig. they're wonderful pets

Madness is often associated with supporting spurms

(Totteringham's nickname is spurms)

Ah, written like a truly bitter little spurm.  A little history for the other board members.....

Once upon a time, back in 1913, Royal Arsenal (note the Royal part, only club in England with that prefix), reloacted from south London to north London.  Then WWI came along, and after the war the authorities had to decide on promotion/relegation to the top league.  Given spurms general uselessness, thay had finished bottom of the first division and were duly relegated along with Chelsea.  However, this would have left London without any representative in the top league.  The Arsenal chairman, Henry Norris, persuaded the authorities to promote Arsenal, ignoring the fact that they had finished fifth and there were three more worthy candidates (the winner of division 2 were automatically promoted).   And ever since that day, Arsenal have remained in the top division (almost 90 years now - the longest stay in the top division).

Anyway, as you can imagine, Arsenal became incredibly successful (English Champions 13 times), whilst their London rivals (pah!) floundered.  Hence this very very very bitter reply from Derek the Dane

I have TOTAL respect for Arsenal and Man Utd.Total credit to them for what they have done.Chelsea is the team I do not like. They tried to be massive,FAILED,got a debt of over 110 MILLION POUNDS and only became big when a corrupt Russian starts to whitewash all his money. The rest of football will now have to play catch up because of his money.

Going back to the topic it's strange how fans can disagree so much.  I love Deep In The Heart Of Nowhere and rate it much higher than Bob's other solo releases which get worse as they go along.

On a positive note the next one (fingers crossed) cannot be much worse than the last one.

I so agree with this, Drunc...up till Sex Age & Death.  DITHON is my favorite Bob solo album, by FAR.  Vegetarians was ok and Happy Club was pretty bad (in my opinion).  Both of those had a couple of very good tracks but, measuring by good tracks (to me) per album, DITHON wins by a landslide.

However, SA&D is my second favorite album.  Such musical/vocal variety & a wide range of emotions heard here.  A few poor tracks (I can't stand 'The New Routine,' 'Cool Blue And Easy,' and 'The Original Miss Jesus')   (and yes, I know that album wasn't written 'for me,' it's purely for Bob)   ,  but the rest are very good.

*cough* the Rats are better than solo Bob when all is said and done *cough*   (though I know some disagree)

Only Franna would disagree with that.  Even the worst Rats albums are better than the best solo albums by a mile.

Very much agree with that, Derek the Dane!

But isn't it a bit pointless to compare BTR with solo stuff? Especially early BTR with recent (ahem) solo stuff? It's just so different, coming from different decades and from extremely different periods in Bob's life. I mean, he's done so much and so many different things, the music has to mirror it!

For me personally, the solo stuff definitely means more (I guess that goes for most of us - we prefer the songs that were there when we "discovered" Bob Geldof the musician, because music is all about feelings and memories). From an objective point of view, I couldn't say which is better, BTR or solo.

Good point.  I guess because, Bob is the common large thread of the Rats and solo music, so it's hard not to, in some fashion, compare the two.   But yes, the Rats and the solo are very different for the reasons you mentioned above.  The reason why I made that comparison in the first place was kind of a kidding summarization b/c of the kinda back-and-forth analysis of the solo work, so I was in a way shutting myself up jokingly.  But, I shouldn't have b/c this thread should just be related to Vegetarians of Love in the first place!

I agree with tying songs/music/musicians you hear with feelings & memories.  Indeed, music I like usually is attached to a good time or event in my life - not always, but most of the time.  The Rats mean more to me b/c I listened to their stuff before solo Bob and loved it.  Then when I heard solo Bob (THC & VOL mostly) I was blown away on how different it was.  Though I didn't care too much for what I heard solo, it was awesome to me how much variety he had as a musician.

Then there's The Wall movie - that was where I truly heard Bob sing for the first time!  So when I then listened to his 'real' music, I couldn't get Pink out of my head...'ha, that's Pink singing different songs,'  but eventually I attached that voice to Bob Geldof, not Pink.

Whatever,  anyway, to me it's hard not to compare Bob's various music/songs,  but the Rats and solo stuff are very different - from each other, and within each other....so it's kinda like comparing green apples to red apples.  And then, all the species within each of those colors.  Or...something.
