- not impressed with all of the strange editing special EFX. I'd like to see the concert as is, tape continuously rolling, without weird breaks, clips replayed, visual intermeshing so that we're seeing more than one thing at a time (Eva Braun pix, dancing Rat fans, etc.), etc etc. "Like Clockwork" was particularly annoying (which can also be found in the 'someone's looking at you extras)! anyone agree? disagree? (don't get me wrong, it's a great DVD!...again, I just could've done without all the weird editing/recutting/whatever.)

I watched this for the first time yesterday and I entirely agree with you. I liked the DVD, but would have liked a continuous rolling. It struck me as a little weird, but I wondered if it had something to do with quality of the original tape and this was some way of dealing with it? I hadn't seen the SA&D promo videos before so they were great to see.

yeah I really liked the SA&D vids, especially One For Me. The way that vid opens is great, Bob almost acting startled that this new, upbeat tempo song started. His expressions are priceless (corny as that sounds). They definitely were throughout the Hammersmith concert too

I finally got to watch this yesterday. I'd have liked to have seen the concert as it was (I suppose I did at the Rainbow!), but a lot of that was from the original VHS video, so it was probably already mixed in.


The one thing that struck me was how good the Rats were live at that time (oh, I knew that!).  Arguably the live versions are better than the studio versions.  She's Gonna Do You In and Kicks are just stupendous live.


I'd heard Tonic live long before I got the album itself.  It's a shame that the Surfacing tour was never recorded for posterity.


I really enjoyed seeing them again.  My 18 month old daughter was dancing around the front room, though she did get a bit scared when there were some close ups of Geldof!  And as for those red trousers.  Was that a sock in his pocket or was he just pleased to see the cameras?    It looked like his flies burst open at one point; wasn't much room in there.


I'd forgotten Pete Briquette's Wilco Johnson impressions, and how cool was Gerry Cott?  Fag hanging out the side of his mouth while he reels off a fantastic guitar solo.


Never got round to the Geldof promos; we had Franz Ferdinand on DVD as well, so that got a airing.  And that wasn't quite so scary.


Not impressed?  I would disagree.  A rare chance to see the Boomtown Rats at what was more or less their peak.  Cherish it!

ArrGee, you misread - I was not impressed with those lame special FX.  But the DVD,  no, I love it!  I AM impressed with how the Rats performed live!


Your kid being scared at Geldof close up....that's funny.  No need to fear...


And yes, his fly did bust open.  Amusing, though obviously not intentional

I finally cut an MP3 of this devoid of the vox pops and obviously the video, and it is a great listen.  The sleeve notes mention the Live & Dangerous release, and that this may have been too early in the Rats career, but I believe a live album in the hiatus between Rat Trap and Mondays could have been an absolute smash hit!  The Stranglers did it with Live X Cert (top 10 - Mar 1979), and the Rats were a bigger band at that point.  It also splits nicely into four parts
