Hey everyone!

Does anyone hear like the Grateful Dead? To be fair, their music isn't really much at all like Bob's but y'know, thought I'd ask anywho...

I'm 18 and fell in love with GD when I was about 12 and first went to America (you'd be hard pressed to find anyone my age who liked the Grateful Dead in England!) and have been frantically downloading their gigs ever since. If you're interested, you can get 'em at http://tela.sugarmegs.org/ their files aret the ones beginning 'gd'. It's quite hard to describe their music as they gather inspiration from loads of difference places..but yeah, it's all good.

So yeah, anyways, just thought I'd put it out there...

It took me about 5 years to be able to listen to the Dead again (at ALL, even minimal amounts) after having dated a Dead Head in high school and the beginning of college.  One day I realized I'd fallen asleep and then awakened to one too many bootlegs of St. Stephen or Dark Star .... He was obsessed and I was at best a casual fan.

Now I can tolerate them again, but not for more than a few tracks at a time; and absolutely, positively nothing more recent than Bear's Choice (I've always kinda loved that version of Smokestack Lightnin').  You missed your time and place, you should be an American in their 40s or 50s.

Two thoughts:

1) If you haven't heard it, Counting Crows does a cover of "Friend of the Devil" which you might like.

2) How weird is it for you in the UK that your Home Secretary shares his name with a Grateful Dead song title?  Do you realize that a good percentage of Americans start smirking whenever he's mentioned by name?  Is Blair a closet DeadHead?

The Greatful Dead... All I know about them is that they had a VERY large following, many of them people who practically lived for seeing TGD live. As I travelled to many gigs myself, I always found that fascinating...

I don't think I'd recognize a GD song if I heard one, though.

Yeahh! Jack Straw, I think that's really weird. No-one else gets it. I've got a heap of Grateful Dead Bears in my room and whenever he's mentioned on the news I just imagine this little yellow Grateful Dead bear like the one in my room.

Do you know that song Golden Brown? I'm not sure who it's by..well there's this other guy in the government called Gordon Brown, so yeah..I always start humming it when he's mentioned.

Lol, just a little insight into the way my head works!

Cheers for the heads up...according to the guy sitting next to me, I'm stupid for not knowing that. Well, I consider myself just that little bit more knowledgable now.

Aren't people in college libraries friendly? Well, to be fair..I do actually know him...

Well yeah, anyways, cheers!
