which musician, or band, dead or alive, would you really like mr Geldof working with?

hmm....If forced I would say Tom Waits and then....Frank Zappa..
Don't know if the late, but great, FZ liked the rats, probably not, but think about it. Frank was very skilled and wrote fantastic lyrics, and Bob could've brought his own sense of lyrics and music.... maybe it's just me, but there's something I would've paid for.. although, my god, imagine the arguments they could've gotten into...

well...had to post something, this mb isn't very lively, is it...

I would like to see Bob and Bono do a duet, but he refused. I liked hearing him with Jon Bon Jovi, that was cool.

WHAT???  WHERE???  I just googled that, and all I found was Bon Jovi covering Mondays (featuring BG).  And btw - Mrs. Robinson is NOT a Bon Jovi song.  Bon Jovi may have covered it, but they sure as hell didn't write it!

I'd like to hear BG do Joey/Rat Trap and whatever the third one is with Bruce and the E Street Band.

No, I do know Mrs Robinson wasn't a bon jovi song.....

Bob refused saying Bono would sing him out of the hall (referring to the Brit awards). Another favourite band of mine is REM, but not sure I can imagine Mike Stipe and Bob doing a duet? Could be interesting. What about Geldof and Jagger?

Glad to know you knew that!

Thanks to the magic of the internet, I've now got a copy of Bon Jovi doing Mrs. Robinson.  But the harmony vocals don't sound anything like BG to me ... Now I'm REALLY confused.  If that's BG, he's a much better singer than I've thought.

If we're talking about duets, then I'd vote for Mark Knopfler.  We could see how alike they really DO sound.

bee-gees? hmm...never heard them doing mrs. robinson....
on the version where Bob's singing it with bon jovi it's really obvious that it's bob singing...guess it's hard to find I've found some bob/rats collectors on Soulseek, so I guess that's why I've heard it in the first place...

bob and mick jagger? hmm...it would certainly be interesting to hear to put it mildly!

OOPS.  A typo on my part.  I meant Bon Jovi.  Don't know how I got from Bon Jovi to the Bee Gees, except that when you're thinking "BG", anything is possible.  Still doesn't sound like BG to me.  I will now edit my post above....

Good question johanna...it's tough! you gave a good answer too

Yeah I probably would've said, just plain ol' duet-wise, Geldof n Jagger too, b/c BG liked the Stones so much, modeled his early hair after Jagger, etc. But Bob'd probably refuse that too b/c I think he'd feel too humbled by Mick (in talent, popularity, etc.). That would be very interesting, Jules, I agree!

I really can't think of anyone that I'd like to see Bob work with. He's so independent that he'd probably not get along with too many musicians other than the ones he's hand-picked...unless, again, they're so great (in his opinion) that he'd be too shy to work/sing with 'em. Another interesting choice (for a duet) would be David Bowie. Talk about singing BG out of the hall!

well, the idea of bob and bowie hit me too, but my imaginations not wild enough to forsay how that could sound/look....

but if Bob wouldn't do a duet with Bono (who's starting to lose his voice anyway), then I seriously doubt that he would ever sing with bowie on stage...:-/

hmm...who else...? well, if you've seen the David Gilmour in Concert dvd you'd probably would agree that he really did a good job singing comfortably numb, so maybe....imagine Bob singing echoes

Actually, I think Bono's recently gotten his voice BACK after a long absence.

A duet with Bob and David Bowie would hit me big time, I can tell you!

But I had an experience that came quite close. In June 1991 we saw Bob at a festival in the south of Germany. There, he sang Bowie's "Heroes" together with German singer Wolfgang Niedecken of the band BAP, Dave Stewart and Julain Dawson. Some of the lines were sung in German (as there's a German version of "Heroes" - "Helden" as well), I think by Julian Dawson and probably by Wolfgang; Bob sang his lines - the words were glued to the floor of the stage on a piece of paper - in English though

Before you even ask - I don't think anyone recorded this. Nobody I know at least

Frank Zappa wouldnt have been seen dead with Bob Geldof. Even when he was alive.
And Bob Geldof would have found most of his lyrics to be too sexist, racist, ageist, anti- vegetarian and what not. Can you imagine FZ at the Live Aid? Pigs would have flyed, and real ones at thet not Pink Floyd's stage props. Plus FZ's music is far too complicated for Sir Bob's three chords and a stadium formula.

Well, you know what? I have never heard Bob in any way comment on Zappas music, or the lyrics...or the other way around for that matter. We all know that he didn't perform on Live Aid the first time around (which he really should have, but I suppose he was just too damn cynical and grumpy and busy and who knows what), but had he I think he would have done a great job. I never really got why he didn't do it, but that's history now anyway..

yeah, franks music was complicated, but I mean, come on! first of all, look at some of the people that FZ DID work with! Sting, Flo and Eddie and even Wild man fisher...that worked (for a limited time, yes..) so I refuse to belive that Bob and Frank couldn't have done something together..

that's something I would have wanted to see...never going to happen though for obvious reasons, but don't tell me it couldn't have happened willy nilly..

My guess is that Zappa didn't particpate in Live Aid because he wasn't a chart-topping act.  Did Frank ever have a hit record (maaaaaybe "Yellow Snow"?)

And I'd think that BG and FZ would have cracked each other up.

RIP, Frank.

yeah, but alot of the artists weren't actually top-ten artists at the time...but he would have been asked wouldn't he?

any hits? well, he could have played Bobby Brown, Dancin' fool, Camarillo Brillor or...Don't eat yellow snow...guess those are some of his most popular songs...

as for hit records..hrm...think the best selling one must have been albums like Sheik Yerbouti, Over-nite Sensation and Hot Rats....didn't he get a grammy for his Jazz From Hell? even though that was after Live Aid..:-/

Frank Zappa fans on a Bob Geldof message board!  At this very moment I am downloading Frank's Geneva farewell gig from 1988, and I've just got tickets to see Dweezil and Ahmet in Manchester in November!

The Rats and Frank are in my Top 2 of favourite artists, so maybe there is a weird kind of connection there!

I'm surprised noone has mentioned that Frank and The Rats both played at Knebworth on the same bill back in 1978.  If I can find a link, I'll post it.  (I have a bootleg of Frank's performance that day, but I have been told by the daughter of the organiser that no recording of The Rats is available.)

Here's a copy of the poster from Knebworth (if the link works) ... http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/CatalogDetail.aspx?ItemNumber=KNE700909&ProductTypeID=HB&CategoryID=&Pos=1&Total=9&KeySetID=7221b55e-c35f-4769-9594-481cc6a82777

Also, how about Bob dueting with Phil Lynott...?  I know they played some gigs together in the late '70s, but I don't know if there are any recordings out there...?

Fifi, I was a big Thin Lizzy,Phil Lynott fan, and I don't know of any recording together, sorry. I got interested in the Boomtown Rats via Thin Lizzy.

Hi Motema,

I have found a couple of links - Bob and Phil (and others) performed together under the name "The Greedies".  It looks like recordings may be available ...

AuntieFifi, thanks for those links! They'll keep me busy for a while, after I get over the London terrorist attacks, sad to say...can't concentrate too much right now, but just wanted to say hello and thank you. I am actually a big Gary Moore fan too. What a great forum!
