Vegetarians of Love -> Political homage/correctness

...an old Vegetarians of Love tape was much loved, but became a casualty in the junk war; ie, the tape got dissociated from the case. It turned up in the back of a drawer yesterday. Playing it again today in the car, after an absence of 5 or 6 years (or more) has rekindled the magic. This is a compilation of musical wonder like no other. Thinking Voyager 2 Type Things is hypnotic poetry, alive with awe, wonder and respect for hi-tech exploration. The Chains of Pain pays homage to revolutionaries everywhere: Desperate deeds were done were done By men with guns in China Boys in clean white shirts Stopped the tanks in their dirt And the blood they spilled Just made the white shine brighter..... ...and the heartbroken, but accepting and redemptive "A Gospel Song" is a magnificent parable of love, despair and acceptance. Sir Bob at his politically incorrect brilliant best. A "desert island disc" that is priceless to me. I don't know if Bob took flak for this masterpiece - his Great Song of Indifference was not what the hand wringers wanted to hear, but this music has quality and class. I love it. Mike Houlding

think that's one of his best lines...by the way!

Attitude Chicken comes from the Happy Club.V O L is a brilliant album. You all might think I am mad but "thinking voyager 2 type things" is brilliant.I often look up at the night sky and wonder where it is.

yeah,  attitude chicken is on happy club, just related it to that line...me and my weird links

I don't know why I cannot stand voyager type 2 things...keep hearing how great people think it is, but I find it really hard to listen to...hmm... maybe I'll give it a second chance...

however, on vegetarians of love I love crucified me...it's amazing. simple, but bloodchilling... listening to that, no wonder I gave up on  the spice girls

Derek - Voyager 2 is one of my favorites from that album as well

johanna - don't worry, there are others here who don't really like/'get' that song either hehe...

I can see it both ways (I think) - one the one hand, it's slow, long, and takes awhile for bob to start singing. It's also very repetitive.

on the other hand, I think it's good because I just like the tune to it...it's very pretty & hypnotic. and I love the "sail on, sail on" parts, ah, lovely I think the instrumental work here is great, and Bob just kind of blends into the whole beautiful mix...

Crucified me is short and sweet, however, not one of my personal favorites but far surpasses the Spice Girls...you do make weird links!

ha, no I know..many people seem to have a problem with voyager..but I'm working on it..really want to like it, I do like the lyrics, but still...hmm...

so, which song on veggies are your favorites, then?

oh, and yes..I would agree that Bob makes better music than spice girls did, but it is a close call.....

ok let's work on this then let's see...what don't you like about Voyager, specifically? The music? the length? the style? What makes it hard for you to listen to?

my favorites? Here:

Love or Something - Since Loudmouth was my first BG/BTR CD, many of these songs hold a special place in my mind. This song (along with Crazy) I liked a lot better than the other solo stuff on the compilation (don't really care for Indifference and Beat of the Night...and Room 19 is my least favorite solo song ever!). It's good because I like what Bob does in it - he's goin' all over the place and it's cool. I like that he spoke French and the whole little "I don't mind" bit over and over, when he runs out of breath...etc, it's a cool song.

Voyager 2... - already explained...

Chains of Pain - powerful, upbeat song that works for me (usually I don't care for 'happy' songs). I think it's one of the stronger tracks on the album.

so have you seen Spice World, the movie? (anyone feel free to reply ) Did ya see Bob's cameo in it? I rented the movie only for his cameo...it was worth it, all 2 seconds of it

hmm...what I don't like about the song...? well, it's really hard to tell, just listened to it again, and, surprise, still don't like it. It can't be that's it's sort of slow, or the fact that he starts singing late in the song (if I didn't like that I couldn't listen to floyd either..)...hmm...maybe I'll just leave it and listen to it again in a couple of years..

agree, love or something is a really good, and funny, song..his vocals are great..

I actually have Spice World taped! it's not a great movie (...), but god, everyone's in it..and Bob's hair-do, what can I say?
but the thing that I taped it for in the first place was actually Richard O'brien playing that paparazzi

hehe well, good luck trying to find the flame Voyager's song of darkness....

yes, Bob's hair was pretty funny, it shocked me! hey, at least it was brushed & styled...

ah of course, good ol' Richard O' Brien. were you first 'exposed' to him through The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as I was? I watched those parts of his in Spice World too, he's interesting to watch...

ha...yeah, I suppose his hair was a bit shocked about being styled...(wait, maybe he does get it styled and things now, but we can't tell?) Poor Bob...people are always complaining about the way he looks, everyone except for us Boboholics...

yeah....got "exposed" (ha!) to Richard O'Brien through Rocky Horror.... absolutely love the show...Wrote the most nerdy fanletter to him about a year ago (which I never done before or after), and he actually replied...took a year, but you know...
bit pissed of by the fact that his album wasn't released here in sweden, but what can you do....:-/

hey, wasn't this thread about vegetarians of love! You're right...me and my links....

Generally, I love all the arrangements on this record.  I just love the way the music sounds, although I do think some tracks, some songs, work better than others.

Least Favorite: Let It Go (the only track I find weak both musically and lyrically)

Mixed Feelings:  Thinking Voyager 2 Type Things - mostly because I think a love song written (even partially) for an inanimate object is creepy; but I love the music and I love the line "this is the breath, this is the kiss" and The Chains Of Pain - just because I don't understand what political situation it's about, and I'm always left feeling a bit puzzled.

Deeply Satisfying:  A Rose At Night, The End Of The World

Absolutely Brilliant: A Gospel Song, Love Or Something, The Great Song Of Indifference, Big Romantic Stuff, Walking Back To Happiness

Brilliant And Then Some: No Small Wonder

Genius: Crucified Me

...delighted to read responses to that post...

I sought this site out because I hadn't heard much of Sir Bob or his music since that album, and re-hearing that hypnotic hi-tech warbling on Voyager 2; particularly

..this is the breath this is the kiss,

made me think of that fresco where God's finger reaches out to Adam's and completes that circuit of creation (although I'm not a creationist) but simply love the wistful and thoughtful and forlorn emotion of the song...and Bob's empathy with the Voyager 2 mission...

Oh for more music that on immediate first hearing delivers that same shock and punch!

...thanks Johanna for your comment. I don't know, but think The great song of Indifference was probably a marketing blunder for Bob. He seemed to have been put on a pedestal that he was not comfortable with, and used that song to reject the media labelling. (This may or may not be old hat to you , but here in New Zealand Bob just sank without trace, and I have wondered why.)
