People tell me that liking the Rats was never cool, however on two occasions recently I've been asked what the first record I ever bought was.
The first record I bought myself with my own money was of course a Rats album (Tonic). When I revealed this information, on both occasions, I was told this was cool! Whether it was because one person's was the Dooley's I've no idea. But non-Rats people think they are cool. What reactions have you had to talking about being a Rats fan/buying their music?
People often tell me that Tonic for the Troops was one of their favorite albums, but don't care for much else. Many seem to have got Surfacing but never listened to it!
As for me, my first single was the Monkees (Randy Scouse Git aka Alternate Title) and first LP was Slayed (by Slade). And looking back I reckon they were pretty good choices for a four and nine year old respectively!
Yeah..i get blank stares as well-being the age i am, nobody i know knows who the rats are. Then when i tell them Bob Geldof was the lead vocals they all look at me as if im crazy! Oh well-there loss...they don't know what they're missing!
For me it depended on the era. Around 1979/1980 it was ok to be a Rats fan. By 1982 it was definetly uncool. But music had changed. I found the Rats to be uncool right up to quite recent. Now when I mention it to my peers they all say that they were a good band (quoting Mondays and Rats Trap). I think History of late is kinder to the Rats.
It's the same for me. Actually yesterday I got the "Bobby who? Could only laugh! When I talk to people my age, and try to explain who BG or BTR is, I just say that BG was the organizer of Live Aid. But then again I get the "Live Aid? It's like they are living on another planet.
now some are a bit more well known because of live 8...but if i try to tell people of my bob geldof obsession i get "hes that old guy whos doing that africa thing. does he sing?"
Every time I say to my friends, that I think Bob is totally handsome, they think I'm disgusting, cause he is 51. But he just got that glimt in his eyes, and I love that. Don't care what people say, Bob is hot.
well my dad laughed when I said Bob's attractive but my mum totally agrees with me! my friends don't really comment on it because I'm not that bothered what they think, I think he's totally gorgeous.
hehe thats true! At 22 I can get away with it, my mum even said I can marry him!!! don't know what his girlfriend would make of that! or what he would make of it?? oh well I can still dream.
Oddly enough, I too think Bob has "Something About Him" that is attractive. Despite his scruffy hair and odd sense of clothing style, he gets my heart pumping! Yea, I would like to spend a month in "Jeannes" shoes...providing the month was when Sir Bob was actually home in England - or perhaps at his Paris digs...
I was blown away by my exterminator man who had heard of the Boomtown Rats! He noticed a Rat pin I had on my blouse and commented he had really liked Bob Geldof and his bands music. He still follows Sir Bobs news items. I told him about this website, so I hope he joins us. I usually get the reply..."The Who????" "Never heard of them!"

Off course! Or come with him to all his charity events. Just be with him (Dreaming)
When I go glossy-eyed after just buying 3 copies of the latest news paper with Bob on the front...clutching them with a crazy grin on my face exclaiming how gorgeous I think Bob, my friends are kinda used to it. Their first reactions were generally 'but he's, like, 100' or 'I saw him on the front of The Times and he looked rough'.
One of my friends is pretty cool though, she shrugged and said 'Well, he's practically godly..and godliness is an attractive quality'.
When I listen to 10:15 and what he says about Jeanne it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. It's so nice to know he's happy and she's taking care of him.
I have just gotten 2 cds with them, and now my food is burned, because I was dancing and writing with you! Fuck Fuck Oh what, guees that's what happens when you love to dance and love BTR
yes, I think he's quite physically attractive (both then and now), in a very unique way. Part of it is because he makes the greatest facial expressions, just subtle ones, when he speaks. Very 'real.' oshora, I agree, just something about him...
Then there's his eyes, his height, his weight, his hair........etc
