Live 8 and the Arms Trade

Here is 1% of the info I have on the following matter

Re: The relationship between the Music industry and the Arms industry and poverty and starvation.

Stop the arms trade – stop poverty

I wonder how much money generated by record companies though increase product sale from Live 8 will find its way into the weapons manufacturing. AND how many people in Africa and Iraq etc will be killed by these weapons?

The Links:

AOL Time-Warner is one of the remaining major label record companies and owns Atlantic, Elektra/Sire, Asylum, Reprise, Warner, American, Maverick, and others. It also owns AOL, which is involved in a co-venture with Hughes Electronics Corp called DirecTV.
Hughes is owned 100% by General Motors. Hughes merged with Raytheon to form Hughes subsidiary Raytheon Industries. Raytheon Industries makes bombs.

AOL is the broadcast partner for Live 8

Warner have released the DVD of Live  Aid

In the light of all this I have a problem with Bob ranting on about the exploitationof the ‘Poorest people of the planet’ – because a few people decided to sell their tickets on eBay. This is a red herring. The type usually associated with the New Labour spin machinery.

EBay is NOT the only auction selling Live 8 tickets!

Help Wanted. If anyone is able to find out the name of the parent record company of the Live 8 performers and I will dig out the info on the links with the Arms Trade and more!

Raytheon Company has been awarded a $16.5 million U.S. Army contract to provide the electro- optic/infrared/laser designator (EO/IR/LD) payload for use on the Army's Extended Range Multi-Purpose (ERMP) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Raytheon Company, with 2004 sales of $20.2 billion, is an industry leader in defense and government electronics, space, information technology, technical services, and business and special mission aircraft. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 80,000 people worldwide.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems is the leading provider of sensor systems giving warfighters the most accurate and timely information available for the network-centric battlefield.

Sony Corporaton is another of the major label companies. Sony is involved in a co-venture with the US Army and University of Southern California to develop advanced training simulations for use by the Army. Sony's face in this venture is known as Future Combat Sytems.

Bola, you raise many excellent points. As i have worked in the music business 16 years and another long stint selling books, I have indeed seen the correlation between the concerts and the media, etc, as the conglomerates buy up everything, to become one huge would-be manipulator of peoples' education and entertainment; but the WEAPONS & ARMS idea, now THAT would be spectacular, not to mention horrific. I agreee that arms sales are pretty much the root of the problems we're speaking of. I will look into the Hughes and Raytheon connection in the future days as we head towards these musical events. I love music and hate to see it associated with arms and weapons, so your post has given me a cold chill and much to ponder.

The campaign against the arms trade is one of the most important battles humanity has.

Campaign Against the Arms Trade

I was able to find the Raytheon homepage very easily.  Two of the slogans on their homepage are "Knowledge is power" and "Customer success is our mission".  The latter one seems to be the company's tagline.  There are other less catchy slogans like "Bringing home the promise of missile defense".  The company is an out-and-out arms company.  They must be the darlings of those heroes who fight the US's foreign wars from a command centre in the Nevada desert armed only with a computer screen.

This is where they are in Scotland:

Raytheon Systems Limited
Queensway Industrial Estate
Glenrothes
Fife
KY7 5PY
Scotland
Tel: 01592 754311
Fax: 01592 759775

So far mostly there are Sony artists I've run into. Future Combat Systems is bad enough but what I worry more about is who manufactures and sells the smaller weapons like kalishnakovs (sorry for bad spelling) and of course other rifles that the "liberation armies" use all over the world. Any connection to entertainment there?Meanwhile, I continue looking up record labels and artists a little at a time, not to mention a bit of concern over the Time (TimeWarner) Magazine article. Now I understand why so few Africans are on the bills. It's not about race...it may be...money! Yet another Learning Experience, but the music is still good!!!

Live 8 will be on pay TV in Australia, carried by Murdoch's Foxtel.

http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=48603&subForumID=139510

Murdoch funds the Weekly Standard, the mouthpiece of the Project for the New American Century, the group including Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney, (Jeb) Bush, Perle (always on UK TV as a pundit) and many more of a similar ilk that has advocated US aggression around the world for the past eight years and has now been controlling the USA since (George) Bush was elected.

Are any other countries taking Live 8 from a Murdoch TV service?

Oeokosko, are you saying that AOL (broadcasting live) and Rupert Murdoch are BOTH "selling" the concerts and putting the money into the arms trade? People either pay AOL, or they pay Rupert Murdoch? The money goes to the arms trade and doesn't go to Africans? Wouldn't someone from Bob Geldof's advisors or staff be auditing things to make sure the money is used correctly? Am I naive?????? On any case, if BBC has live coverage, can't one avoid the other media and go with BBC?

motema2004, no I'm not making any direct connection between the broadcaster Foxtel and money for the arms trade, just pointing out that the broadcaster is owned by someone who financially supports people who advocate and carry out militaristic adventures, as it's kind of ironic.  As franna said in another thread, Foxtel probably got the broadcasting rights through a tender process, i.e. it cost them.  I don't know for sure but it would seem to make sense, otherwise why not just let ABC broadcast it for free, free for them and for the viewers?  I don't know the charging model for Foxtel and so I wouldn't know whether people will have to pay to watch or whether it comes as part of their regular subscription fee.  I would guess that the rates for advertising on Foxtel during the concert(s) will be very high though...

What other options are there for people in Australia?  Any handle on this iluvbobgeldof?

Will people in any other countries have no option but pay TV?
