When I first watched this program I was glued to my chair. The program was inspiring and Bob spoke the truth. Being a British Somalilander I felt almost being transported to my home town where distance was not a barrier anymore. As Bob said Somaliland is a virtual country built by virtual people like us who spend all their time on the internet basically volunteering through the internet to support Somaliland's case for basic development. The Diaspora is the backbone of Somaliland's existence.
Well Done Bob, you've started a journey for us whose steps will be well documented in history.
Hi Jules. Good to hear from you too. It is great to be in this forum. I just can not explain it in words when explaining a virtual country. It is almost like experiencing something real but others can not share it with you. I guess this is the part of the wonders of Africa. It is so far away but in our hearts it exists just like how real our conversation is right now.
I've posted another post in a different topic as I am new to the Forum and learning my way around. It is about Somaliland's independence Day tomorrow. We are all celebrating it around the globe. Will share with you in the coming few days about how it is celebrated in different parts of the globe.
In the meantime plse visit to learn more about Somaliland's culture : http://www.sirag.org.uk/siragdevculture.htm
I would love to go to Live 8 but would not be able to make it for logistical reasons having a toddler and so on. I will be however glued to the internet and the TV to watch it. I'm also collecting all the event info. related to the event for promoting it through the Somaliland websites so that people in Somaliland can also watch it through the internet.
I spotted your other post about the independence day. Are there a lot of Somalilanders in the UK?
I've been on the African continent, to Kenya and Egypt, but would be really interested to go back, I've only had a small taste of it. It is so huge and so much to it and I'm still learning about it. Thanks for your links I'll check them out.
Yes. We do have a large community in different parts of the UK. The first Somalis to settle here were from Somaliland I guess a century ago. THey were seamen with British passports since Somaliland used to be a British protectorate. Most of them lived in the Eastend in Tower Hamlets and Cardif. In the 1980s a lot of Somalilanders came to the UK fleeing from the war. Till then a lot of them have gone back to Somaliland to settle as well as rebuild the country. There is a strong relationship between Somaliland and Britain also since a lot of Somaliland also took part in the I/II world war and so on.
Africa has its magic and challenges also. I am sure anyone who goes there has their stories to tell.
