As for Doing It, it could be Do The Rat, She Does It Right (Dr. Feelgood cover) or even Doing it Right or somethine else. The first three are around but if it's not one of them, I really don't know.

And it is good to see the Rats back. And a massive shame they ain't getting the audiences they deserve.

Great to see the Rats back, shame more people don't want to see them, the two gigs they annouched in Leeds and Holmfirth which are near to me were both cancelled unfortunatly, I just hope when Bob releases his new album there will be some UK gigs.

I have an old cassette bootleg of that Bradford Uni gig you mentioned on 23rd June 1983. However i'm not sure which song you mean when you say Doing It.
This was the track listing, does it ring any bells with you as to which song you mean?

I know all thosos songs and it wasn't any of them, if that was the full track listing for the gig I'am amazed, I remember it was the first time I saw the Rats so it really stuck in my mind, I remember the chorus which was

I don't Feel like doing it, doing it, doing it I don't feel like doing it now

and then the brass section singing do it do it now. It was a fast brass driven tune that has stayed in my head all these years, I did see them a few other times at Leeds and Bradford but I could have sworn it was that gig, if you have the whole gig on tape and its not there then I am very perplexed, it was definatly the Rats but if no-one else remembers it and its not on any live tapes then I must have imagined it, if the Rats themselves don't know it (though I've no way of knowing that) then I don't know where it came from. I was sober at the gig too so I can't blame the drink.

There are a few things the Rats did live that were never recorded. I remember at the end of the gig in 1979 on the Surfacing tour they did a reggae cover whilst people clambered over the scaffolding, but I didn't catch the name of the song.

There is also the 12 minute version of "Joey's On the Street Again", with an extended bridge, during which Geldof broke into the lyrics from another song by Woody Guthrie ....

They also did Feelgood covers (Riot in Cell Block #9 was aired now and again) post 1979. Also they did a fair amount of improvising on the songs; there are some long versions of Mary & Banana Republic out there. Might be worth listening to the bootleg (I don't have it) to see if that Doing it was just part of something like Charmed Lives. I never saw the Rats post Mondo until last year , so a lot of what they did in teh 80s passed me by.

Laibach, thanks for getting me to listen to that Bradford gig again. It must be 15-20 years since i listened to it last. And.......your right! After Charmed Lives they launch into a very brassy number where the words 'I Don't Feel Like Doing it, Doing it' are sung very often. There is loads of trumpet and trombone in it and it lasts about 4 minutes. It is very difficult to hear the other lyrics, you have to remember this is an old bootleg even though the quality is pretty good for bootlegs around that time. I have googled the lyrics to see if it's a cover version but have drawn a blank, so maybe this is a Rats song which didn't make it on to In The Long Grass. To be honest it wouldn't fit well with the rest of the songs on this LP. Would have made an excellent b side. Maybe if any of us get to speak to Garry or Simon we could see if this song jogs a memory?

Up or Down was sung brilliantly by Simon, i wonder if at first he was to sing this on the LP before Bob took over the reins?

I would love to know what the Irish Folk song was they started performing at another gig in Bradford, I can remember my mate and me being quite surprised as they started this song then after about a minute Bob grinned and said Only Joking! and they quickly went into a Rats song.

I have another Bradford gig from '85. Do you think it could have been that one?

The only Rats gigs I saw in the 80s were two in Bradford and one in Leeds but I'am pretty sure it was the gig in Bradford in 85 where they did the folk song.

Found it! It was from the Bradford gig on the 15th Feb 1984. After a lot of barrier problems, where the band had to leave the stage for 10 minutes they carried on with the gig. After Someone's Looking At You and before Dave, Bob announces they are now going to play an old Irish song 'Four Roads To Glenamaddy'. It's obviously a joke and it only lasts about 20 seconds before they start Dave, but it's there! The folk song was originally done by a guy called Big Tom!

Ian,any chance I can get copys of these live recordings,I do not mind if it is on cassette.I watch the Boomtown Rats in 82 and 85 and I do not remember any different tunes.

I do recall Simon once saying in an interview there wasn't too much out there unreleased, and then a whole load of stuff came to my attention.

I'm not sure there are too many unreleased songs, but there are certainly some unreleased versions of songs including the Virgin/Ensign demos, the Dudgeon sessions, the Wainman sessions and the Godley & Creme sessions. There are also a number of songs (covers and originals) pre-1977 that are only on C90 http://theboomtownrats.blogspot.com/2009/09/first-rats-tape.html

I doubt many of these will see the light of day unless another kindly sound engineer comes out of the woodwork....
