Here is how MTV did it.


20 secs (no joke - 20 secs combined) highlights of u2 and coldplay, then go to 7 minutes of ads (incuding a 2 minute making of the new ****ing Michael Bay Movie), then cut to self congratulatory vj's talking about history for 5 minutes before some quick music highlights and back to ad's.  Assholes.

BBC has had uninterrupted coverage since 2pm, the start of the Hyde Park concert.  Now flipping between London and Philadelphia since 5pm, with 10-second snatches of what's going on elsewhere.  But most interesting has been the BBC News 24 coverage which has been at the Edinburgh G8 march as well and since mid-morning - 250,000 marching to protest against world poverty!!  WOW!!!  I think that's more than are at Hyde Park.

AOL also has great coverage. You can pick the feed you want for each city. I'll have to revise my opinion of AhOhHell!

American coverage was pitiful. I only congratulate them on the Pink Floyd performance, and even then they cut out the second solo to "Comfortably Numb." What happened to my VH1?

john McEnroe's comment on BBC sumed up yanks attitude .... 80% of them do not have passport and 90% of remaining have not visited ( or may not care about ) other countries !!!


So what do you expect ... mass  media just explotes the weakness of general public 


To the majority yesterday ,was one big party ... if any amarican are out there ,you may corrrect me but I have not seen or heard of a any mass protest in USA  to  " make poverty history " . In this small island we managed to march 250,000 people ...


Bill Gate spoke some pretty words BUT will him and his pals at Dell willing to put computers and maintain them  in african schools  ?

I have no idea what McEnroe said.  Whatever it was, let's remember for a second that McEnroe's career has always been notable for his "colorful" remarks!


90% of US citizens with passports have not visited and/or don't are about other countries?  That makes about as much sense as the remainder of your argument.


I suggest you take the time to investigate what the US tech industry contibutes, and how much (though I hate to give him credit) President Bush has actually done.  You can start with Bono's request at the TED awards, and how that request was met...then you can keep looking into what Bono has accomplished (with the help of Bobby Shriver) in Washington DC.  And you might want to check into the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Or the growth of one.org in a very short time, or US donations to such things as The African Well Fund, or the fistula hospital....or any of a host of others.


It is my personal opinion that since the US did not colonize Africa, we don't have the same guilt about current conditions that you in the UK/Europe do.  Which is not to say that we're OK with "stupid poverty" abroad....even though we have more than enough of it within our own borders. 


There were over a million people in Philadelphia yesterday.  They weren't all there simply to be in the first row seeing Jay Z or the DMB for free.


I suggest you get on an airplane and spend a few months in the US, you might find your current attitude is completely off base.

some US coverage thoughts

I agree with mrtanner69 and meekus - MTV & VH1's Live 8 coverage was not as good as it could've been.  The reporters were annoying, there were too many commercials, and very little coverage of the actual live event, when looked at in its entirety.  I think more time should've been dedicated to showing performances all over the world than to the reporters jabbering away endlessly, or to crowd interviews - who cares?


While I enjoyed some of the little history segments put together (Live Aid, good G8 background info), I was disappointed that no entire segment was dedicated to the "pied piper of Live Aid" (lame!...thanks MTV ) himself.  If I was a clueless American who had no idea of who Bob Geldof was, I think I would've wanted to know something about his history, other than his already-known Africa work.  And obviously, being a well-informed-on-Geldof American, I still would've liked to see a segment on him.  grr.


Also angry that MTV/VH1 only showed a miniscule clip of Geldof's "Mondays." 


I'm never surprised at the lack of Geldof shown in America, but always disappointed lol.  At least that whole thing with the Ethiopian woman was shown (very moving, with his voice all cracking), and someone from MTV London got to snatch a few seconds from Geldof for a small interview, which I enjoyed


They only showed, ultimately, the bands most popular in America around the world, save for a couple of South African performer snippets.  I swear, if it weren't for Green Day, Shakira, and Good Charlotte, I doubt I would've seen Berlin, Paris, and Tokyo on TV. 


CBS made me proud by showing some highlights of Live 8 from 8-10pm eastern time - only music, no talk.  It was nice to watch some old & some new performances without those annoying-ass reporters.  Unfortunately there were still commercials   But CBS was the only channel to do that - wtf?  No one else in TV was really interested in Live 8, I guess. 


I know I could've watched a lot more on AOL but I'm currently using a dial-up service which is torture to download anything large such as videos of Live 8...


Random comments...


 - Loved Pink Floyd's performance, Roger Waters seemed to really be enjoying himself which was lovely to see.  A little off key in singing though ;)


 - somebody - was it Audioslave? - was HORRIBLE.  omg he was way off pitch and was extremely annoying.  They're annoying enough on the radio, but 100x worse live...


 - Very surprised and pleased with George Michael and Paul McCartney's duet, that was cool.


 - Good London finale too.  Bob was amusing, especially when he sang.  Also found it humorous when he tried handing his microphone to Paul and Paul was fixing his sock or something and didn't notice Bob.  Loved the black hat with the white outfit as well

I saw the 2 hour show on regular TV and didn't get much out of it at all! I hope there will be more coming up. I missed Audio Slave?? I like them on the radio but if they can't seen on key  hmmmm....I thought Roger Waters looked good but Gilmour was scary!! Floyd were good, however, especially in the choice of song!

Mmmmm.  Where does an Australian go?


After way too much time (and I mean WAY too much) spent searching the first address for ANY sign of the streaming, I tried the uk site - bingo.  Only trouble was that my dial-up 56K connection was far too small, so I couldn't watch it anyway.

I don't feel americans need to protest anything. We GIVE BIG to just about every country out there. If only the other countries could pick up the slack. Why is America expected to give more than everyone else?

Ummmm.  Every now and then Life creates a situation as a reminder of just how stupid one can be .


Your suggestion certainly fits, although if that were the case, which site would have covered Toronto, Rome, J'burg etc?  10 concerts, 4 websites ... it still doesn't make sense to me.


I swear I went around the US AOL site several times, but there was no link to any streaming, and no detail re times.  None of it makes sense, because the Philly concert would have started 5 hours earlier than the London concert (given that they started at the same time locally; I'm not even sure if this was the case).


Oh, well, it doesn't matter now; though just to be cautious I've checked out both the US and UK AOL sites and both are providing streaming of every artist and any song ... though it's still not clear if this covers the concerts other than those in London, Philly, Toronto, Paris, Rome and Berlin.


As good (and as lacking) their coverage is, I still agree with 'AhOhHell' (as a former subsciber, I think it's a case of 'once bitten, twice shy') .

Julia,  I saw it here: http://www.live8live.com/.  I didn't follow any of the links to see what was available as I wasn't interested in any of the shows and am not an AOL member anyway, so I don't know how it, or AOL in general, works.  Perhaps AOL didn't have the rights to the other events?  I don't know so I'll shut up now.
