MP nominates Geldof for Nobel CNN International - USA OSLO, Norway (Reuters) -- A Norwegian member of parliament nominated Irish rocker and charity champion Bob Geldof on Wednesday for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize ... See all stories on this topic
he was up for it -86 right? that year it went to Elie Weisel, an american author/humanitarian..all the winners can be found at www.nobel.no I'm not sure who he's up against this time, but found a list of criteria for the nominees:
Criteria of the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee:
1. The candidate’s commitment to nonviolent methods. 2. The quality of the candidate as a person and of her/his sustained contribution to peace. 3. The candidate’s work on issues of peace, justice, human dignity, and the integrity of the environment. 4. The candidate’s possession of a world view and/or global impact as opposed to a parochial concern.
Well, sad to say that President Bush and PM Tony Blair have been nominated for the prize. Not so upset for PM Tony Blair, as I truly feel he is deserving, but to attach him with President Bush is a mockery. Pres. Bush has done so many other "inhumane" and "absurd" things during his reign of terror in America, how can anyone say he is deserving? He is not for the global warming situation - to date (his millionaire "buddies" would not benefit if they had to cease making toxic chemicals that harm the enviornment!) - however, we will see what he says at the G8 meetings this week - he has also supported ruining acres of beautiful land in Alaska in favor of oil drilling, has lied about why us Americans are in Iraq and has been ill prepared to fight that war all together, etc., etc.,etc. ENOUGH!
I hope Sir Bob wins, as he has been nominated about 3 or 4 times and is the most deserving, in my opinion! He has not only fed thousands of children/people in Africa, but has also provided infrastructure (bridges and roads) and medical aid as well thorugh his efforts. And, he has been doing this for 20 years, against a lot of adversity - being a "Rock Star", etc. type of hype against him.
He may well speak his mind with four and six letter foul words, but he gets the job done and manages to get others involved as well. My vote is for him!
If you type in "Nobel Peace Price Nominees" for a web search, you will get several sources that will tell you who has been nominated to date. It appears a lot of women (a woman won last year) are on the 1,000 preliminary list and it appears most have been nominated for their efforts for world peace, fight for human rights, and fight for childrens rights.
Some tough competition for Sir Bob...Good luck you "old soldier"! We love you.
Hmm, I may be a bit bias but I definately think Bob deserves it. Like O'Shora said, he's been working hard for 20 years. I mean, he's definately had a massive impact and brought the problems of Africa home to a lot of people...millions perhaps. I mean, who else could have had the guts and determination pulled off Live 8?
Better late that never - not that Bob will give a monkey's anyway.

Well, the GW Bush nomination is a total JOKE, i don't even need to get into that crap.
But as for the actual contenders, it will probably be an anonymous southeast Asian woman for quiet but successful work against land mines or something. Not that the winner won't be deserving but just LOOK at what this man Bob Geldof has done. He created perhaps the biggest event in history and enlightened two generations about African poverty. He definitely deserves the prize and it will rock my world if he gets it.

There's always someone looking at you.
I'd say the competition for the Nobel Peace Prize is pretty fierce, and I'll agree with joegravellese that it's likely to be someone we've never heard of that wins.
It always amazes me the number of people working quietly but determinedly all their lives in great adversity and danger, for some deserving cause or other. (I'm sure Bob has met his share of them in his travels in Africa and probably would have no qualms about any of them winning the award.)
It would be great! Yes, it always amazes me when I read about all the many people doing humanitarian work around the world. Wouldn't it be nice if every one was like that? Then there wouldn't be anyone starving or living on the streets in this world.
However, for now, GO SBG for 2005 NPP! He has my vote.
I must admit, he seems very deserving of the award.
But even before Live 8, Bill O'Reilly of the FOX News Channel (VERY Conservative) tried to bring him down as a liberal trying to destory the world, how Live Aid only caused more harm to Africa, rather than aid. It's sickening how people can put such bad spin on great men. What's even worse is the number of people that'll believe him.
But that's what we get in today's world. I fully support Bob and his receiving the award.
