No worries about the photo’s, glad that you liked them. I took about 20 in total (some much more dodgy!) so if I get any time soon I’ll post some more.
Hi Jules – Yes, the WH Smith had probably never seen so many people, I was fourth in the queue and all I could see behind me was a queue of people to the door and I heard some people saying it doubled around the shop. It also went bonkers when he arrived with people not in the queue trying to get photos, but the staff were good and let them take one photo and then asked them to move on.
Hi KidneyBean (cracking name by the way!) yes I thought cramped around the childrens book section was a wise idea! I had lots to read whilst I stood an hour and a half!
We were pushed through very quickly, which I thought was a little unfair considering that us at the front had been there for 90 minutes. My book was taken off me before I was anywhere near Bob and thrown back at me after my photo, so I didn’t get to ask any of the things I wanted namely is he touring this year. But I did get my book signed and a lovely photo so I can’t really complain. Well, actually I’m British so I think I probably can!
I also found a local newspaper article on the day so thought you might find it interesting:
Cheers and a song for author Sir Bob By Richard Edwards THE crowd was not quite as big as at Live 8 but the place still buzzed with anticipation. Hundreds of people crammed into the WH Smith store in Leeds city centre to catch a glimpse of the man leading the global drive to make poverty history. Sir Bob Geldof was not due to start signing copies of his book, Geldof in Africa, until 12.30pm yesterday but Jacqueline Hardy, of Harrogate, turned up 90 minutes earlier to grab the coveted first place in the queue. "I love his way with words, written and spoken. I'm looking forward to meeting him," she said. The book describes his experiences as he travelled through eight of the continent's countries. WH Smith organised a military-style security operation to corral the crowds. Some people lined up patiently while others gathered at the sides of the cordon to catch a glimpse or a photograph of Sir Bob. Cheers and applause broke out as he appeared from a back room to greet his audience with an almost shy wave before turning to speak to the media. He grinned and said "thanks for the singing," when a handful of demonstrators held up Make Celebrities History posters and burst into a chorus of "Oh When the Saints.." before being ejected. Target Sir Bob said the next big push for the Make Povery History campaign, after Live 8 and the G8 summit, was to target a deal on trade at the forthcoming UN summit. He declared himself happy with the G8 deal, which saw agreements on debt relief for 23 of the world's poorest countries as well as increased aid contributions to Africa. He said: "I was pleased. I think if it had not been for the London bombs we could have got an agreement on trade but because of the bombs the leaders wanted to get back to their capsules. "There was the room for them to stay and talk for longer. It will be taken up at the UN." Asked if he believed Prime Minister Tony Blair and American president George Bush to be the UK and US leaders to have shown the most commitment to Africa in the 20 years since Live Aid, Sir Bob replied: "Yes to both." He added: "For Blair it is personal, for Bush it is political. "He realises the US cannot ignore this problem any longer, the movement at G8 was very significant. "His two daughters are working in Aids hospitals in Africa, his wife has been on a personal tour, so he is getting it around the dinner table every night."
omg i can't believe i missed it!!! i'm already annoyed with my self for only really discovering "bob geldof" the night bfore the live8 concerts so i didn't even bother to text in for a chance to go to one of the concerts....
