What a wonderful organization, and it's all about supporting the people and children of Uganda from the grass roots. They have a person based in Uganda who buys the beads from the people there, providing a steady stream of income, then more money comes in based on sales. The people with Bead For Life take no income.
I'll bet many of us wondered how we can support the people of Uganda in these horrible living situations. It can't be done through supporting the government, because of corruption, etc. But this organization gets the money directly to the people in the worst affected regions.
One of their key focuses is on helping kids get an education. Because of the fees that have to be paid, even for public education, many kids can't get schooling. So they put a portion of the money from the sales towards supporting families and getting the kids in school.
Thanks MJ, that was interesting! I'd like to see the beads before hosting an event etc, but what a great idea! Alison bought some Masaii crafts around June. It's a good way to help people preserve their culture while at the same time showing support. We have a Bead Show in Washington DC area every autumn so I hope to see these.
