Hi everyone Ive been listening lately to a track called Dig A Ditch from the anthology and this song to me sounds most like a Boomtown Rats track in terms of energy passion and lyrics. Also a song called Talk Me Up which is the b side of World Calling and in my opinion a better track-Its got ratlike qualities. Finally another b side Hotel 75 feels a bit like the Boomtown Rats which is no bad thing -naturally its very good. Anybody got any opinions?

This is the World Calling was like a bad Rats song and DITHON sounded like Rats cast offs, but otherwise, it is interesting how Geldof hasn't really delved back too much into the work he did with the Rats. The stuff I liked (and there isn't that much) has been that that departed most (TGSOI, $6m Loser, Scream in Vain).
With the musicians he has now it was always going to be a different sound when Bob went solo. I don't recall too many violins and accordians with the Rats. Also of course Simon's excellent backing vocals are not around on the solo stuff. In a way i'm glad it's a different sound, when Bob's band play Rats songs they never quite appeal to me as before. Perhaps In The Pouring Rain is close to a Rats song, i can imagine Crowe's backing vocals replacing Annie Lennox.
ARGEE - thanks for your reply. I think Geldof can try too hard to sound like classic songwriters like Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan- perhaps its a lack of confidence but he had loads of that in the old days.This comes across in the Happy Club album a lot . I think all his albums have been reasonably good but they all contain a few duds too, the proverbial cutates egg. Id love him to try some mad Captain Beefheart type free range music - now that would be interesting!
IAN - you make some very good points. Im Irish and I dislike the fiddly sound in his band . Its used at the end of Dig a Ditch and seems out of place. Of course the instruments can vary from track to track. I love Scream In Vain and that largely due to Pete Briquettes box of electronic tricks- more sort of experemental tracks like this would be welcome but Im generally not complaining!
I think Mind In Pocket from Sex,Age and Death and Like Down On Me from The Happy Club are for me the most Rat sounding songs Bob has done as a solo artist.I am glad that Bob(so far) has managed not to sound like the Rats.

No problem with not sounding like the Rats, for me the problem is the songs post Long Grass haven't been that great. Bar a small handful, mentioned above, I don't think they are as good. Personally, I prefer the lesser bits of V Deep and Mondo Bongo over all Geldof's solo work. I think Gerry Cott had better songs in his brief recording career (Lone Ranger, Pioneers, Alphabet Town) and they sounded nothing like the Rats.
