Ideas for promoting new album
Permalink

Looking at the pithy review in MOJO magazine( not a bad review) and feeling the new single will get little airplay I wonder does anybody have any genious methods of promoting BG' s new album. He'll probably get a few live tv appearances as well but it all seems so random. Maybe Bob himself doesn't care too much. I dont think written reviews in mags or newspapers really really sway anyone- they probably read them absentmindedly and forget very soon but thanks to the net there is a small community that care about his music- the real "trick" is gaining new fans or else reconnecting with older Rats fans (wonder where they all went? ) Maybe he sould have an affair with Lady GAGA!

yes, two.

i) Get a track on a high profile advertisement
ii) Do a duet with Lily Allen

I don't think there are too many older fans of the Rats who care much anymore.  I gave up after Vegetarians of Love and that was about 20 years ago.  Last two albums I picked up in bargain bins.  I'm just here for the nostalgia.  Ain't too many acts I would buy new albums from, only Franz Ferdinand and The Arctic Monkeys.  And if I can't be bothered to buy a Jarvis C0cker solo effort, there's no chance of me getting Geldof's either.

I don't like the advert idea, it always ruins songs for me.

The internet is the way to go, downloading, streaming, promoting on FB and Myspace, Youbloom (well who's heard of it wink) etc.  TV appearances and performances if he can.

So Jarvis and Bob have let you down- life is cruel- incidentally the cost of the new Geldof album is the same as a few pints of bitter or guinness so be generous with your emotions and yer money. I have a particular maybe fanatical liking for the Boomtown Rats and generally I  find all Geldof's solo albums have six or seven good/ decent songs but thats just me. PS Empire Of The Sun's album Walking On A Dream is the most consistently good album i've heard for a while. I'm nostalgic for seventies football- bring back those muddy Derby County pitches.

I am in for 70`s football comeback.£2 to get in,stand where you like,no knob of a steward telling you to quiet down,no players earning £70,000 a week so he can go shag a slag,no players rolling around like they have been shot,no managers moaning at refs,no shrimp eating fickle fans, bloody hell why do I still go to football.
As for Bob I do not know.He is releasing a new album but deep down we all know that he really does not care. The homepage is still not updated(only 4 weeks to the album/single release) and I have not seen any promo cds on the net.

Hi Derek- anybody on this site is either mad or beyond redemption!. One good thing about music and all art is its ability to surprise so maybe like SAD the songs dont't need shouting from the rooftops and Bob is happier for a more" take it or leave it" approach. He's not Rod Stewart on ITV playing tired old standards we've all heard a million times as in his recent ITV outing. Geldof always writes original songs so he's not "lazy" in just churning out ersatz pap .

PS Your right about seventies football - good analysis- and I just love the fashions and the snow (love watching old games in snow! They used to say about the hard as nails Liverpool Tommy Smith he wasn't born he was quarried!

HI JULES- Don't think Geldof would use a song on a tv ad or I doubt he's hip enough to carry that off if asked seeing that most advertising seems to be aimed at teenagers- another  sign of ageing  is when you start noticing this, as with the police!

Basically anyone interested enough will find the album one way or another - the internet is the first port of call nowadays for almost any information- a lot of media promotion is  just very random like authors turning up to promote books on radio stations at 10. 30 on a Tuesday morning- not very scientific- and its the same with a lot of music.

Hey, I have this great, new, brilliant idea for promoting anything!
It's called "the Internet" and I'm told everyone can make their own website and put their stuff on it! And then about 3 billion people know about it!
Think about the potential: promoting your new CD, selling tickets for your gigs... It's a revolution!

(Sorry, I'm being a bit cynical now, as you will understand I hope)

I wouldn't say either has let me down, it's just I don't like their solo material very much.  I'd rather have a few pints than buy their records.  This is especially true in the case of Geldof, he doesn't need my money/emotions.  I made my emotional investment in my teens, and have got my interest.  I can't even think of six good solo songs from Geldof, only three would be better than Another Piece of Red, and that's saying something!

Hi - Geldof is a little like one of my other heroes Woody Allen and there are parallels in, putting it plainly they used to be good but have been on a steady decline for years but to me they still maintain my interest. The last maybe six or seven Woody Allen films have been poor compaired to his golden years 1967 to maybe 1995. IF I go to see a WA movie its because some part of me still cares ( cue violins) and its the same with Bob. Odds are we'll all be reading your insight into the Geldof lp whether you find it in a bargain bin or not- resistence is futile!

JOKE - Hoe gaat het? I dont know if BG uses the internet as I think I remember reading somewhere that he was a bit of a liddite. Maybe theres something slightly endearing in someone who just doesnt give a f*** in a world of shameless self promotion and constant availability.  Whatever happened to being slightly mysterious as in the old days of pop when there was a certain distance from "stars" and not constant overexposure? Like in the Super Furrys song The man Don't Give A F *** that  might be Geldof.  Tot zeins!

I've really like Woody Allen's last two movies (Vicky Christina Barcelona and Whatever Works)  Admittedly he hadn't done anything that good since Small Time Crooks (Match Point was OK), but he does make films very regularly and is always worth a viewing.

Yes, I'm sure I will get the Geldof LP (though I have resisted getting the Gerry Cott one so far), but I held out for a couple of years on SAD...

Bob is appearing  (talking I think) at the Royal Dublin Society music show, which runs from 1-2 October. It would make sense to launch the new album there maybe?

Oh please let it be on the Saturday as I fly to Poland the Sunday morning! I was at the entire weekend last year and the seminars were excellent! Will be absolutely raging if Bob does the Sunday...........  Actual dates of The Music Show are 2/3 October.

LIly Allen???? LMAO Bollox to that! How crap,,, hmmmm on the other hand how hilarious that would be! nah dont think so.....actually i don't reckon bob would be up for it, I mean I expect he would like to go where he feels at least youngish and not grandad age LOL.....does he really want to get into the teeny bop market? do the teeny bops really want to get into him?

What he needs is to promote himself to an audience that are spending lots on music and goin gto lots of live gigs, I know just the publication in fact......hmmm mail me if you wanna know more ;0)

ArrGee, 'on the DECLINE'?? Bob on the 'decline'? haha honestly there are some horrid terms in the music industry it would appear. Some other terms that spring to mind is 'washed up', how deeply does this resonate with 'former' stars??? - I wonder.

Cruel world it would seem in some ways.........hmmm he's not on the decline he is perfect.

I think that if you read back you will see that noelindublin wrote that not me.  I don't think any of his solo material is that good.  If anything, Sex Age & Death is better than his first solo album so he is improving.   He just hasn't reached the standard of Mondo Bongo nor V Deep yet.

For me all of Bobs solo work is better than V-Deep.Sex,Age and Death is in the top 4 of all the Rats/Geldof stuff. But music taste is wide and different so to each his own.

HI-  I meant that Geldof's record sales and profile as a singer is down in terms of how people percieve him- he can hold his own in terms of making half decent records. I generally find that hyped critically rated albums by artists too numerous to mention tend to disappoint me so everybodys at it it seems. If Geldof has the wherewithal to follow up SAD with a few more albums  then it might not come as a "surprise" and he would be perhaps seen as a musicain and not an after dinner speaker. The decline goes from a Rats/Veggies of Love highpoint to "secret songwriter" status- what modest Bob a secret songwriter? Anyway the lp is the price of a few pints so its exciting for the veterans and hopefully a tonic for the troops!

HI DEREK- its just so hard to explain ones feelings about music and even discussing a favourite artist/band will bring out diverging views. I would rate V Deep above all Geldofs solo stuff. I think the four solo albums so far would have made two pretty good albums. MY pet Geldof "hate" is those clunky political songs such as The Emergent Nationalist and Roads of Germany. If I wanted a polemic I'd study politics - these songs are worthy but dull as is most of The Happy Club- but I do like that albums title track and its na na nas! and My Hippy Angel . Maybe these two songs are my Geldof "guilty pleasures". Will you be in Copenhagen for the midnight opening of Tower Records for the new  Geldof album with all these crazy fans queing 'round the block?

There are a few of us here laid out a lot of money on transport, hotels and tickets for Belgium, so if they are off, tell us now and dont leave it till the last minute. It would be perfectly understandable if they everything has been delayed due to the death of his dad. But the sooner folk know, the more chance they have of getting most of the money back. Fingers crossed, they are still on. I think the best tribute Bob could make to his dad is to go ahead and sing Walking Back to Happiness with pride.
I dont like to admit it, but I am living on a pension now, cant afford to waste money.
SAD was delayed for a whole year, was it not?

If and I'm not sure, the album is postponed until January I can wait- it would be more disappointing if nothing had been recorded at all. Last January in Ireland was miserable ,with snow, so it might be a bit like in a Storm Breaks "ice cold/freezing cold" etc when we get to hear Geldof's opus.

Was truly horrible.  I ended up at the Days in Park West snowed in for a week as I couldn't get to my normal hotel in O'Connell Street.   However had I only had a Geldof album like Sex Age & Death for company, I think I'd have just read the fire notice.  Not an album to cheer you up.

Once the audience was in the building.  Jules can let you know all about it along with her 44 mates.

I don't think Sex, Age & Death was delayed.  Not sure anyone knew it was coming out until it more or less arrived.   I remember been shocked when it came out as a Geldof album was the last thing I expected.

The whole of Europe was in an icy grip or in other words proper winter weather but you could have  had a cheap skiing holiday if you had gone to the Wicklow mountains nearby. Sex Age and Death actually sounds like a Woody Allen film title come to think of it. Geldof is a bit of a miserabilist in a lot of his music - how many happy songs are there really- thats an idea for a new post.

If you are talking about Rome, we were alone (myself and my partner).  We got the worst deal, 45 people turned up in Milan the night before and at least got to speak to the band even though it was cancelled when they got there.  We didn't know as we were travelling and turned up, no band, no fans, just us some workers and a deserted stadium, a wasted pile of cash and no time to even see Rome.blankstare
