HI - Does anybody know which was the Rats best selling album of all time- I'm including all the re released cd albums and greatest hits in this.
I suspect in might be Tonic . From 1978 till 2010 it must have outsold the others in terms of accumulated sales. I bought it probably four times in various formats.
Can anybody tell me if Tonic has outsold the greatest hits?
When I think about it I must have bought all the individual albums about four times each, if not more, never mind the Geldof solo stuff!
Tonic and Surfacing are the 2 that not proper fans have heard of or bought. Imust have had several copies of Tonic as I wore out the tape so many times. Now I've probably bought various copies of all of them in different formats.
In the UK it is A Tonic for the Troops, but worldwide it is possible that The Fine Art of Surfacing outsold it. Only the guys at the record company could tell us for sure.
Thanks ArrGee for your work in getting those statistics of album sales. I was aware of this before. Obviously these figures represent a snapshot in time when the albums were originally released- the spike in the graph - but I wonder about sales subsequently over the years. Since 1978 there must have been continuous sales of Tonic although at a much lower lever and over the years this would have accumulated, like all the other albums- a trickle, steady or otherwise.
Surfacing was probably a bigger worldwide hit outside the UK.
Geldof had the goodwill of all of Britain and the world when he released his first solo album so it's not that surprising that he sold one hundred thousand copies - he was the housewife's favourite for a while!
PS Its amazing how someone can be in the charts for over a year, like Florence and her Machine- you'd imagine sales would peak in the top ten and then taper off over a few weeks but these Lady GAGA types can continually be in the charts for months on end.

Pah, I have a copy of Pale White Girls signed by Geldof. Now that is rare
I often wonder what happens to all those gold & silver discs. Must be a pain spillting them between the band. And I wonder if they actually play. I did spray some 7" singles with gold paint when I was young, but it just fcuked them up!
