Can someone help me.I have just seen a video from the band, for a song called Rain.It is the video for the terrific DAVE,with some words changed ,for what seems like no reason at all. Can someone explain this, as all this does to me is to ruin the image of Dave,as a song.THANKS
As I understand it the lyric was changed to Rain for the US release as the record company were concerned that Bob singing about another man could be interpreted as gay which maybe they thought would harm record sales.
The Americans did not like Dave so Bob changed the lyrics to Rain. The video is the same as Dave.On In The Long Grass the songs Rain,Drag Me Down and Lucky are all different to the UK version. In the USA the b-side is An Icicle In The Sun but in Canada the b-side is Precious Times. There is a 12 inch promo from Canada as well.
Yes Laibach is right about the "need" to change the lyrics probably by the American record company lest the song be misinterpreted as a gay love song.
I'd like to think that would not happen nowadays but lots of pop songs are open to being misconstrued- it all depends of the audience that's listening.
It would be interesting to know if this change of lyrics was instigated by Geldof or by Columbia records. I think it was by the latter.
PS If anyone has the lyrics for Rain it would be good to see them as I can't make them out fully!
The rain came pouring down yesterday and everything he loved got washed away I felt despair come crawling through that phone I know the feeling but don't get me wrong
Rain, I've always felt that they were touched by fate It's never easy but why throw it away Maybe they were both chasing this flirt with death, but never kiss her RAIN! RAIN! RAIN! RAIN!
The rain keeps falling in steady streams a puddle(pool?) of water that kind of grief(green?) the flooded moments the sea of peace the cool from pain and wipes you clean
I see you bleed I know you feel the squeeze but please believe the view from on your knees decieves Keep falling... RAIN! RAIN! RAIN!
I know your empty I know your numb (keep falling, keep falling, rain) and you can't function I know that your drunk (keep falling, keep falling, rain)
The rain, I've always felt that they were touched by fate the thing that gets me is the stupid waste so pick it up and don't put it down a newer story in another town
but I see you bleed I know you feel the squeeze time heals believe then it will seem you dreamed these things Long AGO! Rain! Rain! Rain!
and Rain, I see you bleed I know you feel the squeeze time heals believe soon it will seem you dreamed these things....

Ian - thanks for going to the bother etc. The part I was having trouble with was the "Rain keeps falling...." verse as most of the song has the same lyrics as Dave so your interpretation is more or less the same as mine.
To be honest I haven't listened to this song for a long time but the lyrics always puzzled me/ IE the bit I've highlighted.
