What a brave, emotional, but brilliant performance from Bob and the band last night
He opened the gig by singing the Soft Soil for his sister and could not sing all the words By the end, he was on fire and a brilliant and receptive audience made sure he realised how much they respected him for this He is flying to Dublin today for the funeral on Friday and back by private jet in time for the gig He really does not want to let the fans down ,1 new song More later

So glad it went ahead, it sounds really special.  I hope it helped him to express his grief.  Did you see him after the gig or did he go directly afterwards.  Excited about new song!

Its brave of Bob to go ahead with the concert but some part of me thinks it would be what Cleo would have wanted- Bob to be doing "his thing".

Sitting in a hotel room in  London, home tomorrow. I feel priviledged to have witnessed something special. Two very different shows, one a cultured audience, one a pub crowd, complete with drunks. He was magnificent. I will put everything up tomorrow, but here is a revue from a local Belgian paper from the Brussels one
 (kindly translated by Joke)
"Sister's Funeral Does Not Stop Bob Geldof From Playing Hamont Achel
Today Bob Geldof buries his sister Cleo in Ireland, but if all goes well he will be taking to the stage tonight in Hamont Achel. The rocker is using a private jet. (lent by a friend).
On Sunday morning Cleo Geldof passed away in Spain following a sudden brain haemorrage. After the passing of his 95 year old father, Bob Senior last August Bob Geldof 59, is burying a second family member within a short period of time. The young Geldof lost his mother at an early age, after which his sister, 10 years his senior, looked out for him. Geldof has a second older sister Lynn, who worked for UNICEF.
Despite his loss, Bob Geldof last night performed in Vilvoorde. Visibly moved, he dedicated the first song (Soft Soil) to his sister, before launching into a furious rock set. It seemed like Geldof, who withdrew into himself before and after the show, wanted to play his sorrows away. He was supported by a 6 piece band of Irish and British Rock veterans. In over 1 1/2 hours of Pub Rock (new one on me) in which the violin  met the guitars, Geldof and his band played steaming versions of well known  and less well known songs. This earned him several standing ovations. We will have to wait and see what mood Bob Geldof  will have brought to Hamont Achel, but he is certainly a man who will not let down his audiences."

(A different mood, more humour, more chat and a spontaneous request slot. Should have seen Pete's face when he deviated from the set list- what the F... is he doing now? kind of look.) The band were brilliant and were really strong support.
Bob still had time to do his usual meet the fans afterwards and I was able to convey our condolences.
Believe me Bob HAD to do these gigs. He needed his music ,and to express himself in that way. And he needed the love and support from his fans, which was certainly in evidence. There was hardly a dry eye in the house at the beginning.
Full report  tomorrow.
If anyone wants to use this revue, go ahead.
Irene

Sorry guys. I have since found out that any videos taken at concerts are for personal use only, though you will probably find them on youtube anyway. But I want to stay on the  right side of legal and not cause any trouble for Bob , especially at the moment.  He did Dazzled By You and Here's To You. The second is an absolutely lovely song, melodic, great guitar from Johnny and a catchy chorus. Here are some pics, you might find amusing, firstlly the 2 gig venues. Dont they look like children's play centres? The Hamont one (2nd) was full of middle aged men, some drunk, drinking beer, looking for something to do on a Friday night, but they enjoyed it, shouting out requests, and we had a ceilidh during the final rendition of GSOI. The gig poster was in the ladies loo at our hotel. There was one in the Gents too, we checked. But they are not there now (-:  The coasters were in the local Italian restaurant and tablemats too. The restaurant is now a few coasters down. The guy did not mind. I will type up a setlist and full review and get it on here. asap.

Just to add, the 3rd gig was very good also. Again a different audience, one to match the classical atmosphere of the Brugge Royal City Theatre. It was a short set, we were out on the streets at 9.30. No new songs this time.
P.S. you can find that poster in my loo now smile.gif

Before the Hamont gig I was talking to the 2 VERY handsome German pilots who flew Bob over and  I think they said they were going back to Dublin the following day, so it may be the reason the set was cut short. Bob had given them tickets to the gig. They seemed to enjoy it. They could not get over how down to earth he was.

Our little Belgian jaunt began when we met up at Brussels Midi railway station. The girls were there to meet me off the train. We drove to Vilvoorde to our hotel and set off to locate the venue. It was near the hotel, which was great. Then we spied a shock of white hair in the cafe , went in to find Bob, Johnny, Niall and Jim having a break from rehearsals. We offered our condolences, chatted for a while and left them to it. They had been on the Eurostar after my one. When I said I had breakfast in the hotel because I did not know there was one on Eurostar, Bob joked I would eat two anyway because I am Scottish. (I didn't) The gig was in a very nice little theatre. The audience had a good mix of ages of both sexes. Bob came onstage on cue and proceeded to say that his sister had died two days ago and the concert was dedicated to her, in particular the first song, Soft Soil. Vince, who speaks Dutch translated this for the audience. There was an audible groan of shock and sympathy. Bob tried to hold it together, but needed the band to step in a couple of times. There followed a powerful, energetic, electric performance. He sang for them I think, sang his heart out. The band, who are always good, stepped up a notch that night. There was not much chat, which was understandable and the usual banter was missing. He went straight into song after song. The audience were loving it, joining in singing and clapping. He then played the first new song, Heres To You and said the album will definitely be out in January. It is a catchy little number and I am still singing it in my head. He got at least 3 standing ovations from a very appreciative audience. I think it says a lot for him that he still found time to meet and greet, sign autographs and pose for pics. Back to the hotel, which we discovered had a railway line running alongside. Noisy night number 1.

We drove up to Hamont the next day and settled into the aptly named, as it turned out, Hotel De Klok. Joke went to the loo and came back saying come and see what I have found. There glaring down at all the ladies doing what they have to do was a sexy and sultry poster of Bob Geldof, advertising the gig. The Gents were quickly checked and yes, there was one in there too. This was a free day and Joke drove us up to the beautiful Old Dutch town of Maestricht. I spent my time trying to avoid being mowed down by cyclists, but we had a nice afternoon. We ate in a local Italian restaurant in Hamont that night, only to find the tablemats were advertising all the upcoming events, including Bobs and the coasters had his name in bright letters. We had to bring a few souvenirs home, you understand.

How do you sleep when your hotel is sandwiched between a catholic church , with a bell that struck once every quarter and full chimes every hour and a town hall bell tower which played a little tune on the hour. Noisy nights numbers 2 and 3. The morning of the gig, we went to a local monastery, where the monks still make their own beer. Yes, some was purchased. Met up with Katharina and Corinna, who were at the same hotel. Found the venue that afternoon, an unimposing building. It was a working mens pub type hall, full of men enjoying their pint. They outnumbered ladies by 2-1. Standing room only. Bob had just flown back from his sisters funeral that day, so we wondered what he would be like. He seemed more relaxed, chatty and handled a noisy and talkative audience well. (No swearing!) He was not going to do much talking because the audience were doing it for him he said. Mostly the set was the same, but when someone called out Love like a Rocket, he started to sing it. The band wondered what was going on and the look on Petes face was a picture. There was another request, but cant remember what it was. He sang Heres To You again and then straight into Dazzled By You. This was a surprise to the band. He virtually played solo and Vince just stood looking at him, with his hands on his hips. I liked it, but not as much as the other. The audience, some rather merry, were in a good mood by the end and a section decided to have some ceilidh dancing to GSOI. It was all good fun. Meet and greet again and I got a kiss. (Hot flush)

Back down the motorway to Brussels for the Eurostar for me and the girls were going on to Bruges. Noisy nights 4 and 5 for me were a night either end in a hotel near Kings Cross, handy for the train back to Edinburgh. Spent them listening to sirens going up and down Euston Road.

Set List from memory, not necessarily in the right order. May be some I have missed.

SCREAM IN VAIN

HARVEST MOON

Fantastic, thanks Irene.

I cannot think of another international celebrity who is as down to earth as Bob.  He really is.  No-one else has that with the fame he has.  As I always say i like him because he is both ordinary and extraordinary.

The other request, which Scottie did not remember what it was, it was Dave! I had never heard it played live before, so I was very happy to hear it! There was a little panic behind the drumkit when Bob started playing it, because Jim doesn't know it and Niall took over. Sounded great of course.

Thanks for sharing this with us Irene. Very well written! I really enjoyed reading it and I'm sure you are still on a high from that kiss! Memories *sigh* Why o why didn't you nab that poster when you first saw it?!?!?!?!?

Jules- Love your description "ordinary and extraordinary". It does indeed sum our Bob up and the only other person of comparison in my opinion is Leonard Cohen my other hero smile

Joke- I love Dave and I'm glad it was requested. I'll never forget Bob singing it at Dave McHales benefit concert last year. I'd imagine it was probably quite painful to sing this time too where his emotions are so raw. Respect to our amazingly brave and unique man!

It's good to see that these gigs were a success considering the circumstances. Scotty's report is very well written and thorough, mentioning two new songs but these things don't seem that important at the moment.

Its curious that this will be Bob Geldof's second album in a row to be preceded by particularly difficult personal circumstances so again it's music playing the part of healer if it can ever truly do that.

Thanks for providing the link. He seems to be on good form musically from the brief clips of the concert and it seemed a decent sized crowd from the opening speeded up shots.

Maybe  using smaller, more intimate venues is the way to go for future concerts.

Hope there's plenty of grit ready for the roads and snowploughs too for the January launch and possible tour.

Hey he can play Wind Chill Factor to celebrate the weather too!
