From the Sunday Independent (Ireland) E-Mail Print Version Add to Clippings PERSON OF THE MONTH Bob Geldof ADVERTISEMENT BOB Geldof came to the world's attention as a global activist just over 20 years ago when he organised Live Aid. That day the whole world came together through music in support of one cause - inspired primarily by one man. In Ireland, we had known him as the Blackrock boy turned rock star, the determined, outspoken, socially aware young man who was bringing social inconsistencies to people's consciousness. As part of the Boomtown Rats, he had made the country proud with his chart hits and colourful life, and was married to an equally charismatic woman in Paula Yates. When he organised Live Aid, the country became proud of him for another reason - for making the world sit up and pay attention to global poverty, and spurring on ordinary people to do something about the famine in Africa. The haunting images of starving African children, with the message 'Feed the World' and the passion of the musicians helped raise over $100m for famine relief in Africa. This year, Geldof completed a task that some thought impossible and surpassed the success of Live Aid with Live8. This time the message was 'Make Poverty History'. Again, Geldof rounded on the world's most respected musicians to help promote the cause, and timed the event to coincide with the conclusion of the G8 summit in Edinburgh. Geldof has once again fashioned himself the symbol of determination, of getting things done. This time he did so with the support of his teenage daughters, each proving successful in her own right, and the daughter of his late wife, all of whom he has raised since their mother's tragic death. Live8 has once again brought world poverty to the minds of the most powerful leaders and the most ordinary people. Geldof has proven himself as a real leader, a global force. But most of all, he has shown that ordinary people can be inspired to do something - however small - to relieve suffering.
